(Previous thread 17)

We've had our heatwave - is this it for the summer? All is lush and green in our LairGarden, flowers are blooming, berries are ripening...

In the TalkLair, all the windows are open, the Pimms is chilled, the MN massive salad is ready to serve. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Sounds more like Carmageddon. 🥹

NoBinturongsHereMate · 13/07/2025 00:02

I had a car (mid police chase) crash into the neighbour's garage, which was right next to my front door..it is really loud.

Front loaders use a lot less water than top loaders, which is why EU regs mandated them. The Dettol washing machine cleaner is good because it foams right up the pipe between the drum and the detergent drawer, which is otherwise impossible to reach.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/07/2025 08:33

Your poor neighbour. What happened to the driver?

I've had similar, I was eight or nine and my bedroom was at the front of the house. One night I was woken up by my brothers bursting into my room yelling because there had been a three car crash right outside the house, a real smash-up with one car bursting into flames. It didn't wake me up.

SinnerBoy · 13/07/2025 09:00

Blimey, that sounds rubbish, Gonners! We used to live on a terrace of 8 houses, next to a bridge over the Metro line and in the days of joyriders, several cars lost control and came over the embankment.

We were at number 8 and they always landed in the garden of number five. Presumably, there's some sort of clever explanation involving physics.

Bint, thanks for the Dettol advice, I'll get some when I get home.

If I ever get home...

What happened to the driver?

The driver survived at least long enough to be put in the ambulance. The passenger did not.

Gonners · 13/07/2025 09:19

No idea what happened to the driver here - arrested, I hope. He (it will be a he) must have been going at a hell of a pace to take out a very solid brick wall and two massive lavender bushes and continue to hit the front door.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/07/2025 10:39

That's grim, Bints. As for the other driver I hope he was arrested too.

RasaSayangEh · 13/07/2025 11:22

My goodness at all the car stories!

We live on the corner of a T junction which has a 3-way stop sign. It’s a very quiet suburban street with a 25 mph speed limit so we don’t get boy racers down here. However a year or two ago some women in a car drove up our street (the downstroke of the T) and were so engaged in conversation that when they came to the stop sign the driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break and they roared straight into the house opposite. Luckily nobody was hurt but our neighbour had to have half the front wall of his house rebuilt. DH (who is an architect) has been irritated ever since because the contractors rebuilt the window slightly to one side of where it had been and to his eye it has ruined the symmetry of the facade.

Britinme · 13/07/2025 12:13

Dammit that’s brake not break - I’m on my iPad and it doesn’t do editing properly.

Gonners · 13/07/2025 23:10

This morning I dropped in on the neighbour whose wall, garden and front door are now no-go areas. Luckily there's a bell on the back door. She's in her early 90s and totally compos mentis, if physically frail, but was widowed around Christmas. She is now at the end of her tether because ... wait for it ... the insurers are querying her date of birth, which apparently doesn't agree with their records.

Apparently this is the third time that exactly the same crash has happened! I had wondered why they had reflective red lights attached to the outside corner wall. Obviously they don't work.

moto748e · 13/07/2025 23:17

It does make you wonder about the speed they must have been travelling at!

Gonners · 13/07/2025 23:20

And had they been turning right instead of left, it would have been us!

moto748e · 14/07/2025 00:00

There was a similar case locally the other day, some old fella, in his 80s, drove into someone's living room. Some wag added the comment, "He claimed the other driver was on his mobile phone, and drinking a can of lager. Police said he was entitled to do what he wanted in his own living-room."

VictorianBigot · 16/07/2025 22:23

Hello @Overtheatlantic, are you a Talker with a name change or are you new to the thread? If the latter, welcome! Grin

@Gonners that made me laugh rather a lot. I once slept through a fire alarm, one of those old fashioned bell ones which was right outside my door. Someone had to wake me up.

My friend lives on a bend that attracts boy racer types, and she recently had a young lad who had just passed his test crash into her garden wall. He was ok but very concerned about how he was going to tell his dad that he'd wrecked his car already.

In my own car news, a group of men in high viz vests waved a hairdryer at me as I was exiting their village this evening.

RasaSayangEh · 19/07/2025 03:20

Gone quiet on here! I’m away so not checking in as much (although trying to keep up with the Fife threads 😓).

This sign at a local temple amused me greatly.

Love that sign! I am also trying to keep up with the Fife threads and catch up with a lot of stuff that got neglected while we were away from home for six weeks.

SqueakyDinosaur · 19/07/2025 06:48

Given the genesis of this particular remote corner of the Mumsnetverse, it's unsurprising that we're all busy trying to keep up with the Fife case!

Particular hat tip to Oney/Bez for his commentary/translation of proceedings into Fiferspeak...

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/07/2025 07:36

Another one here whose been glued to the Fife case. Bez's commentary has been a real pleasure and had me spluttering and snorting all the way.

Also, it's raining! Finally! Typical as we have a hosepipe ban starting on Tuesday.

moto748e · 19/07/2025 10:49

Same here! I barely fed myself yesterday! Wigan have a rare Saturday afternoon game today (on the BBC too!), so I'll get some fresh air today at least.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/07/2025 11:53

Heard a strange scrabbling sound outside and then a squirrel went past the window and landed in a lavender bush. It ran off okay but when it landed in the lavender it actually bounced. There is a faint smell of lavender wafting in through the window so I suppose the squirrel must smell of it too.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/07/2025 10:41

It wouldn't have occurred to me to try rolling the balls in the lions' mouths until I saw the sign.

Am also glued to Fife - current thread and catching up on a previous one where I got behind.

Britinme · 22/07/2025 13:46

And Real Life keeps getting in the way!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/07/2025 14:07

Yep! Just went out to cut and hang up some oregano to dry and come back to find another thousand posts.
