Thread 18 - TalkLair: "That's no moon. It's a space station!"

(Previous thread 17)

We've had our heatwave - is this it for the summer? All is lush and green in our LairGarden, flowers are blooming, berries are ripening...

In the TalkLair, all the windows are open, the Pimms is chilled, the MN massive salad is ready to serve. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Heatwave, you say? We've just taken shelter behind some islands, to keep out of the approaching storms from the Atlantic. Currently 12°

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/06/2025 23:37

First official heatwave in NI for 2 years. It went up to 27°C, so I briefly risked short sleeves.

artant · 23/06/2025 21:00

Definite heatwave territory here. Even my 99 year old mother sat out in the shade in the garden on Saturday. And she didn’t even request a cardigan!

Gonners · 23/06/2025 21:22

It has been warmish here, but not much above about 23°C. I feel the heat much more now (at 73) than I used to. It's a bit like a second menopause - yay!

RasaSayangEh · 24/06/2025 06:30

Sadly, the heatwave ended on Sunday. It's been very windy since - must be those Atlantic storms Sinner mentioned.

Poor Mochi did not enjoy the heatwave. Must have been awful to be covered head-to-toe in thick fluff and be a chonky dumpling. Here she is, trying to cool down on the kitchen tiles.

If we had a tiled kitchen floor I'd have done the same as Mochi. It was too damned hot for me.

artant · 24/06/2025 14:45

It was properly hot but my garden faces north (give or take a bit) so the patio is shady and was comfortably cool.

VictorianBigot · 24/06/2025 19:07

Rather than stretch out on the cool floor tiles of the north facing bathroom, Kasper prefers to take shelter under the bed, on top of a fluffy rug, in what is the hottest room of the flat. I wonder if it's instinctive because it's 'shade'?

I ❤Kasper, with his oh-so-tragic expression of disappointment with the world. He always makes me feel slightly guilty for my inadequacies.

I went to Belfast on Tuesday and by criminy, it was humid. Same in Larne on Wednesday, but it's always cooler at sea. There's another spot of weather coming in on Thursday, we're en route to the work site, hoping to start at 4am, when I'll be in my bunk.

Britinme · 25/06/2025 23:25

I’m currently in Northumberland. No heatwave here. Apparently back home in Portland temps have been over 100F though.

RasaSayangEh · 26/06/2025 09:35

Warm humid weather has returned to us (plus waves of rain). Good for the garden, as they say.

The forecast is 20° for Northumberland for the next few days. We're sheltering off Ballycastle, it's about 15° and overcast, but out of the wind and calm sea.

Oh that is spot-on, @Gonners ! 😄

So sorry to read about Fags on our previous thread. It's odd to mourn someone whom I've never met yet saw online for years and years. We didn't even interact that much, but I shall miss her.

artant · 29/06/2025 12:19

Very sad news about Fags. I’ll miss her wonderful stream of consciousness posts and her bravery and honesty in the face of the cruelty of cancer. I hope knowing there were a bunch of people she’d never met rooting for her helped in some small way.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2025 12:23

Sad news. I never met Fags but she sounded like an amazing woman. Agree about her honesty and openness, she seemed to be facing it all head on and it was interesting to read her thoughts. If there's an afterlife, I hope she's having a good time there.

moto748e · 29/06/2025 13:00

So sad; I'm sure she moved us all.

Britinme · 29/06/2025 17:21

She certainly moved me. We never met IRL but I always enjoyed our conversations and her take on things. I shall miss her. I hope it helped her a bit to have us to chat to online.

RasaSayangEh · 29/06/2025 17:53

Yes, very sad to hear about Fags. She had such a lovely and quirky way of looking at things, always brought a smile to my face with her posts.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/06/2025 17:58

I loved her posts about the sloth feeding and visiting the horses. She was so joyfully enthusiastic about it all.

SinnerBoy · 29/06/2025 18:33

Yes, it's really depressing, even though we knew it was coming. I hoped she would hold out for longer, but I knew deep down what going to a hospice meant.

It was heartening to know that she had such a happy, meaningful experience with "her" horse.

VictorianBigot · 30/06/2025 09:56

@artant I was about to say I will miss her stream of consciousness posts!

I met Fags once, many years ago now, and she was, unsurprisingly, very lovely in person too.

Gonners · 30/06/2025 21:03

I think all of us on the TalkLair threads will miss her glee at the positive stuff, like the sloth, the horse, the crazy living-wake and the super-cool mobility scooter, and her surprising calm throughout the shit. I feel sad to lose her, but also sort of relieved for her that it didn't drag on.
