Thread 18 - TalkLair: "That's no moon. It's a space station!"

(Previous thread 17)

We've had our heatwave - is this it for the summer? All is lush and green in our LairGarden, flowers are blooming, berries are ripening...

In the TalkLair, all the windows are open, the Pimms is chilled, the MN massive salad is ready to serve. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

That's lovely. Well past the peak here in England. It's no beauty spot where I live, but there is a run of trees on the main road by the pub that look absolutely magnificent every year. Perhaps next year I'll take a pic!
I saw that house too. Just down the road from me!

Gonners · 28/10/2025 20:35

Please go and view it, @moto748e, and report back.

moto748e · 28/10/2025 20:38

It's still got leaves on it, but way past it's best. And it's chucking it down here!

Oh, you mean the house! 😃I think not!

Gonners · 28/10/2025 21:24

Ha! I wasn't going to mention the Test Match result, but you asked for it! Obviously, being half-Welsh, I am on the Anyone-but-England side, but the Aussies really are remarkably good. I assume this is related to Aussie-rules football.

moto748e · 28/10/2025 21:56

Did I mention it? You're talking about England v the Kangaroos last weekend, @Gonners? Not Aussie Rules.

Gonners · 28/10/2025 22:10

Sorry @moto748e - I seem to be in stream-of-consciousness mode. Yes. I was talking about England-v-Kangaroos and just idly wondering whether a country that plays Aussie Rules would be more likely to be better at League than one that doesn't.

moto748e · 28/10/2025 22:33

As far as I know, i think schools in Australia divvy up between playing Aussies Rules and league, and you either play one or the other. There's been a few exceptions (Karmichael Hunt for one). The real reason they are better is two-fold: the game is massively more popular, and hence swimming in money over there, and they have many more playing the game. And this England side is weaker than earlier sides anyway. There's no Ellery Hanleys or Shaun Edwards's here.

That house is extraordinary!

There are three sycamore trees in the gardens next to and behind mine. They’re really far too big for small suburban gardens. At the moment my lawn is under a thick layer of sycamore leaves.

As distraction, I offer a truly boggleworthy house: www.mumsnet.com/talk/home_decoration_pictures/5434816-oh-my-days

I have great admiration for their dedication to their decor theme!

That house is wild. I wonder how much it cost for all that stuff. They must have been collecting it for ages, searching out the garish wallpaper, artificial flowers and statues to get it just right. There's barely space to put a cup down on any of the surfaces which makes me wonder at the practicality of living in such a house.

RasaSayangEh · 29/10/2025 09:02

Those curtains will have cost an absolute fortune.

There's a big detached house not far from us that was expensively renovated after changing hands about 10 years ago and all of a sudden there were very attractive young men and women coming and going. People assumed it was a high-end brothel, until someone met them in the pub and asked. How they laughed! No, not at all, it was a porn movie set and they were the actors.

It's changed hands again since then, and these must be the pix of the interior when the pornistas sold up. Must have been quite high-end porn!

What a lovely house @Gonners... although if that was the pornistas' interior decor, I can't help imagining what the photos would look like under a UV light (especially the giant cushions on the beds) GrinGrinGrin

I’d rather have the pornista house than the other one, though I’d definitely have to get rid of the soft furnishings.

Thank you for that image, Rasa 😬

It is, and only about 500 metres walk from a rather nice beach ...

RasaSayangEh · 06/11/2025 05:32

Insomniac MNing on a thread about dogs in car boots (don't even know why, as I own neither a dog nor a car). One of the things I got from that thread was that there's a significant proportion of people who are completely unable to imagine any situation that doesn't exactly mirror their own: in this instance, the simple fact that a saloon car boot is entirely unlike a hatchback car boot. I mean, I knew that anyway (both halves of the sentence). Anyway, the OP WNBU.

Insomniac because my grandmother is very unwell, mum and her siblings unable to decide on medical/hospice/care home options, so all of us in the next generation have been called upon for our opinions. Surprisingly*, spreading the stress to everyone has not resulted in less stress for everyone.

*Not surprisingly

I was reading that yesterday evening, @RasaSayangEh, and laughing at the rampant haven't-RTFT-itis going on. It was so tempting to wade in and post (very angrily) that I would never do such a thing ... if only because I have neither a dog nor a car.

Gonners · 06/11/2025 10:41

I am rather disappointed to discover that the AIBU thread "To expect Sunday Dinner as the agreement?" has filled up, because I was racking my brains to recall what it reminded me of and, too late, it has come to me. It's The League of Gentlemen, specifically Benjamin's visit to his insane toad-obsessed uncle and aunt.

moto748e · 06/11/2025 11:37

Oh I read a bit of that the other day. Deeply weird. LoG fits it to a tee!

weaselyeyes · 06/11/2025 17:47

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, Rasa - hope a consensus is emerging from the mass stress.
