What's that noise?

Sitting out in my garden - it's not exactly peaceful, I can hear trains and traffic and voices, but I can tune them out. But there's this sound I hear every night, a little electronic/machine chirrup which comes about every 33s. It's hard to tell which direction it comes from, lots of houses and flats and gardens around me, plus the back of a Tesco Express just along the road. I find it really hard to ignore! I thought it was a smoke alarm at first, running out of battery, but then it would eventually actually run out and go off? But it's that sort of thing, but feels like it's outside.

Any guesses?

When I heard a similar noise it was the carbon monoxide alarm in our camper van running out of battery. But as you say, it would eventually run down and stop.

No camper vans round here. Maybe someone's CO monitor but it must be very close to an open window.

Aliens planning an attack? My advice is to cover yourself in tin foil and get somewhere safe

RNApolymerase · 21/06/2025 23:46

Are you young? It could be a noise maker, either a cat scarer in nearby garden or a teenager repeller at the Tesco, which you can hear.

NuffSaidSam · 21/06/2025 23:47

Probably some kind of alarm

I'm under a large parasol, shall I just cover that with tin foil?

Sadly not young.
Maybe one night I'll go down to Tesco and see if it seems louder.

I can hear those cat/fox scarer things that people have in their gardens. Most of them say they're not audible to humans, but apparently I have the hearing of a cat 🤷🏼‍♀️ We used to have one in our garden and it was infuriating.

BlueTongueSkink · 21/06/2025 23:57

I think we are next door neighbours OP! We moved in a few days ago and have heard it ever since our first night (we're also near a Tesco express!)
I think it's someone's smoke alarm running low on battery. I hope it stops soon because it's driving me mad 😡

This. We have one in our garden as there’s a cat in the neighbourhood that likes to use our bark chip edging as a litter tray. Dh and I can’t hear it, but our dc can

Yes, I was in my 40s and used to be driven mad by one of those teenager-repellent things in a square in the city centre…😀

Shout "hello Brian" and I'll let you know if I hear you 😀

Have you also heard the bloke singing (droning) Oasis songs from the flats behind Tesco?

This.

It could be a midwife toad; we have them locally and they make an electronic type sound.

BrianWankum · 22/06/2025 08:54

No it's round the clock and too regular to be an animal.

I didn't but I'm going to listen out for him now! 😁
