How much screaming can you here from your garden

The sun's out. Understandably that means doors and windows are open and people are in their gardens. Unfortunately around here that seems to mean screaming. Yesterday it was a mum and son who are 'known' in the area, screaming at each other, calling each other names and swearing. Today it's been mainly a young girl screaming on and off all day, I don't mean crying I mean rage type temper screaming, like in a tantrum, but it's been happening intermittently all day long. It has driven me to Rightmove today. Is this normal where you are? Can you hear screaming from other houses in your garden?

Can't correct spelling mistake in title which will now irritate me forever.

None. I can hear the distant sound of kids playing and that's about it. My little one is the only child under 18 on our estate and he doesn't scream.

HurdyGurdy19 · 20/06/2025 16:11

I'm sitting in my kitchen (coolest room in the house currently) with the French doors open.

It's 4pm, so after school, and I can hear some kids playing somewhere nearby. I had to actually stop and listen, as I have developed the ability to screen out noisy children (I live very close to a lower school and break times just release the childrens' inner beast 😅)

Just as I read your post, and whilst actively listening for it, some child let out an ear-piercing scream, but it was just the one, and the noise level has returned to a muted murmur.

I think we're lucky where we live, as even when the surrounding children are playing in their gardens, it's unusual for their noise to be intrusive.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 20/06/2025 16:11

No lots of lawn mowers and a bit of music.

kids are all in the park which I can’t hear from here

Lakeyloo · 20/06/2025 16:15

No screaming, don't think I've ever heard screaming but the new neighbours next door but 1 have just let their awful yappy dog out in the garden, and the seagulls can make a hell of a racket when something upsets them.

BuildsLikeASkyscraper · 20/06/2025 16:16

If I go down to my kitchen at night, to sit a bit with a cup of tea, I often hear screaming. Or maybe you'd call it howling. No houses near me tho'.

Ilovemyshed · 20/06/2025 16:16

None. I hear the birds, the wind in the trees and the distant sound of a mower.
Rural living is bliss at times.

WhyWouldAnyone · 20/06/2025 16:21

None, thankfully. Some chat at laughter at normal levels. We're fortunate to live on a lovely street. Lots of kids but all pretty well behaved and people are considerate of their neighbours.

Some noise is to be expected and at reasonable levels, is absolutely fine. Screaming and blaring music - antisocial and not OK.

noctiscaelum · 20/06/2025 16:22

Of course you can. I don't understand you are asking this in the first place.
If you don't want to hear people talking screaming, just shut your windows.
Ithe temp just doesn't make any difference of their volume, it they were noisy neighbour, they will be even more noisier when they keep their window open and you keep yours open.

AcquadiP · 20/06/2025 16:23

I live in a long street of terrace houses and have my door wide open. Other than my dog padding in and out, I can hear the birds, an occasional car driving past and a couple of kids who live on the opposite side of the street happily playing together. No screaming.

somejust · 20/06/2025 16:23

No screaming, but I am looking after my friend's dog while she's away, and turns out he's an inside-outside-any-damn-which-way barker, so apologies to my neighbours.

Good news is, he'll be gone tomorrow, (not-so-good news for my mate's neighbours I guess).

DiscoBeat · 20/06/2025 16:24

Just birds! Shortly a 'Muuuuuuum' as I think my teen will want a lift to the gym

Boredlass · 20/06/2025 16:25

Too much.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 20/06/2025 16:25

My neighbours dc are in the garden all day everyday in this weather! I wouldn’t mind the sounds of them playing and having fun but its constant screaming, whining and tantrums!

Judiezones · 20/06/2025 16:26

I can't hear any screaming but our neighbours with children are not the type to allow their children to scream thank goodness! If I'm in the garden I can hear them playing but they're not very noisy, so it's peaceful.

camshaft · 20/06/2025 16:27

Just my own children playing in the paddling pool and driving me insane because despite saying repeatedly ‘keep your voices down’ they just don’t seem to understand! They’re 9 years old. They’re having fun. We live on a new build estate. Kinda feel guilty but also kinda don’t

Next door banging round in her kitchen all day, so cupboards banging shut, pots and pan noise then came the inevitable...ALEXAAAAAAAAA

Queue some podcast coming on, then a 2hr conversation on speaker phone all this.

What I have learnt is Alexa is rubbish as it never does what she says so she has to repeatedly ask.

I just closed my windows and door and stuck a fan on cos it was irritating.

How can one person make so much bloody noise 🙄

I think we live next to the same person 🤣

catin8oot5 · 20/06/2025 16:27

I have a primary school about 250 metres away and I love sitting in the garden and listening to them playing at breaktime and lunchtime

Also sounds like my neighbour

genesis92 · 20/06/2025 16:29

I’d much rather hear the noise of children playing intermittently than a dog barking all day or people playing their music at obnoxious levels.

Ive moved to my first new build estate recently and have noticed how much noisier it is in the gardens. Think I’ll be avoiding this kind of thing next time I move

ForLovingAquaSheep · 20/06/2025 16:29

No, I'm surrounded by fields and the neighbours on my close are all retired.

They do have an annoying habit of playing music from the Alexa in their dining room and sitting at the back of their garden listening to it.

While it's thankfully nnocuous stuff it drives me absolutely potty. I can't have my music in without getting into a volume war. Why can't they buy a portable radio and have the volume low. Why do people think the rest of the area needs to hear their music of choice?

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 20/06/2025 16:31

I’m a couple of hundred yards away from the local Primary School playing field, so yes, I can hear the kids letting off steam at break times. I rather like it, to be honest. They’re well supervised and there’s very little screaming.

The after school football training is far noisier - the kids are great, but the teacher seems to think he’s coaching the England squad judging by his bawling and screeching!

theemmadilemma · 20/06/2025 16:45

Silence and birds. The odd car. We do have neighbors but all quiet today and largely they aren't that noisy plus we have space.

stargirl1701 · 20/06/2025 16:46

Not as much as I hear at my classroom window. You can tune it out eventually. Just takes exposure!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/06/2025 16:49

None. Occasional excited squealing or unhappy crying of children. I don't think I've ever heard angry rage screaming jn the 10 years I've lived here!

TheCurious0range · 20/06/2025 16:52

I live in a populated area, I've worked from home this afternoon with the back door open and the local school has an inset day, no screaming at all
