Does anyone have any desire whatsoever to live on Mars ?

I really, really don’t. I have no interest in even going into space never mind travelling to another planet.

Come to Swindon. Popping out eyes or zombie attack are actual choices here 😆

As an Oxford United fan I can verify this as true.

I fear that Mars in the apocalypse will be inhabited by Trump, Putin, Musk and various other cunts. I would prefer to die.

SmileForInstantBeauty · 21/06/2025 00:02

Not read everyone’s comments, I’m sorry if I coincide.

what’s the point of humans moving to Mars or anywhere else come to that?

we’d only fuck it up like we have here.

Sorry I know it’s meant to be “lighthearted”, so in the spitit of the thread -

I think the males might be happy to be be there, as in the book “Men Are From Mars”

I thought it was Musk that was on about Mars anyway.

No MIL up there though... unless she insists on also going.

Hadn't thought of that ! 😁 Maybe Mars has something going for it after all. I must say though, regarding space, having read Douglas Adams, I wouldn't mind trying one of those Intergalactic Gargle Blaster thingummies or whatever they were called (been a while since I read the books). Going to dine in The Restaruant At the End of The Universe could be fun.

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2025 00:04

Gravity is different. I'd be taller.

With that in mind, the assumption is we could live on Mars. But given the difference in impact on the human body that raises a lot of questions.

Particularly when you consider the development of the human body. What would it do to children? Would it impact pregnancy?

These questions are impossible to answer at this stage and requires experimentation. Further to this, there's ethical questions about the first children on Mars and experimenting with children.

@stargirl1701 I thought you were talking about Swindon.

Exactly!

Though of course his bladder will have packed in due to the ketamine and the lack of supplies will bring him down.

This is Mn, OP, disproportionately inhabited by people who come in at 5.30 and put on their pyjamas, thereby declaring the day is over, and no further leaving the house will be happening. Grin

In Becky Chambers' Wayfarers( cosy sci-fi) series, part of the backstory is that when earth started becoming polluted and uninhabitable due to global warming, the rich minority all migrated to Mars and founded a colony there, leaving the poor to survive as best they could. Eventually, when it became clear that there wasn't much habitable time left, the population of earth dismantled the remaining cities and built a fleet of enormous space ships in low orbit, launched them into space containing the remaining population, drifted for several generations living on food raised on the ships, before running into an alien species and eventually being given a spare sun to orbit their ships around. And it took many years for the Martian humans and the spacefleet humans to reconcile.

Edited

Curious as to whether the people watching/.reading (?) Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers are locked in their homes at 5.30 in their PJs?

CtrlAltDlt · 21/06/2025 00:11

@Shenmen Good point, forgot about the old ketamine there. So it won't just be cold but also will be covered in piss. And the only way to get about will be by Tesla, except there's no plug sockets.

Can't say it appeals.

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2025 00:18

Not even a little bit but it is my hope that all the dick heads build themselves massive spaceship and bugger off there soon!

RandomNameSelection · 21/06/2025 00:19

No, it would be shit.

Mars One was a project that was going to send humans to live on Mars, never to be able to return. It was supposed to send the first humans this year, unfortunately the Company behind it went bankrupt.

I think there was going to be 40 people in total sent in groups of 4 at certain intervals. All had to pass various stages of assessments and interviews. It would be interesting if anyone on here knew someone who applied to go on the mission.

I remember hearing an interview with one of the women who were going. All the people who went would never be able to come back to Earth, they knew they would die there. She was fine with that, and with never seeing any family member again. They would have to live their lives in some sort of atmospherically controlled domes.
I couldn't imagine not being able to go outside and breathe air. I would hate the look of the landscape. I absolutely hated the look of Lanzarote with its barren bare lunar landscape rocks, I couldn't stand the look of living on the moon let alone Mars.
In millions of years, as the sun expands and gets hotter we and everything on earth will become extinct and the earth will be uninhabitable, but that's fine, everything has a finite life.

If the day comes where we all had the choice of burning here on earth, or evacuating to Mars, I’d rather stay here with my fan and hope for the best.

Couldn't have said it better myself

MayaPinion · 21/06/2025 05:52

No, but if there’s an option to send some people (I can give you a list) to Mars can I do that please?

Gagamama2 · 21/06/2025 09:13

CtrlAltDlt · 20/06/2025 23:26

His name was Elon
He was a mogul
With yellow transplants in his hair
And a dress cut down to there

Hahaha.

it actually kind of pisses me off because millions if not billions are going to be spent on it which could be better spent on Earth. All those amazing brains trying to figure out how to live on Mars could instead be trying to figure out wealth distribution and equal living standards across all countries here on earth. But hey. Maybe they’ll move onto all that once they’ve got bored

JackieQueen · 21/06/2025 09:58

Life on mars? Hmm, only if Gene Hunt is there😍😉

Cillaere · 21/06/2025 10:03

XenoBitch · 20/06/2025 20:19

It has to be an improvement on the town I live in 😆

I was going to say the same, I've lived in worse places 😂

TheWandyDoorholes · 20/06/2025 23:49

There isn't anything there . There isn't even a Waitrose there . Where would us Mumsnetters get our naice ham? Do they even the internet up there ? Can guinea pigs live there?

😂

Shhhitsasecret1 · 21/06/2025 18:53

Right now? DH is away with work and I'm home alone with two hot, overtired, clingy children... I'd move anywhere if it was alone 😆
