Not with rats , but our family dog would scarper whenever my dad wore a certain coat.
As soon as he took it off she would throw herself at him tail wagging 19 to the dozen .
If anyone else put it on she was warey but not scared.
We never figured out why she hated him in that coat

did she have another owner before your family

Yes , she was a rescue pup , we got her when she was about a year old.
She was absolutely fine with my dad and other men ( and women ) just not the coat.
It was a big padded waterproof thing that rustle a lot , a bit like the hi-vis jackets of today so she'd run off even if she heard him before she saw him .

Does your coat rustle or jangle in any way ?

I don't know but rats are my favourite pet, (never liked dogs). Sadly I can't have pets as I travel often.

Twitchytwitcher · 19/06/2025 23:10

I’ve never had that happen with any of mine. Is it always the same coat?

How old are they? Could they be the rat equivalent of teenagers? My teenage daughter would not be seen dead in a coat. Even if it is -5 outside. Maybe you are offending their fashion sense.

No, but.they did get.in a panic when they saw cardboard boxes. We built a Parcours for them once, they were too frightened. So I think you can get that response.

BloodandGlitter · 20/06/2025 13:58

Rats don't like new objects they're afraid of them, you either smell of look different in the coats and it's freaking them out as they're not familiar with it. Also rats are drama queens of the highest order sometimes.
I had to listen to 3 week old rats yesterday screaming because they were feeding from mum and the other babies wanted to feed too.

Dogs are lots of work and expensive, I like ones in other people's homes, just never wanted one of my own.
