Why is everyone losing their mind about 28 degrees?

All I have seen online today are calls for schools to shut, activities to be called off, and some sort of national emergency to be declared over a few hot days.

3 years ago we got to 40 degrees where I am, and nothing closed. What’s the madness about this time?

I agree that schools should not be mithering on about blazers, and water should be available, and sports day in full sun is probably foolish. But really, closing?

It does happen every year when the temperature gets up to this

Pinkflower100 · 18/06/2025 16:12

I’ve not seen any of that but hope they will be allowed to wear pe kit to school if it does get up to 30 degrees as their school uniform isn’t the coolest items to wear in the heat

Justwingingit2005 · 18/06/2025 16:14

Yes school uniform rules should be relaxed in the heat unless air con in the school.
My posts are full of people complaining it's hot. It is hot it's summer. Just try to stay cool as best you can and I wish people would stop walking dogs mid day.
I'm not a fan of hot hot weather as I struggle to sleep but I wouldn't be moaning about it to everyone.

Yellowlab34 · 18/06/2025 16:16

I think anyone asking for schools to close is looking for a few days off

ERthree · 18/06/2025 16:43

Those calling for schools to close are no doubt the same ones that create merry hell when the schools close in the winter.

yakkity · 18/06/2025 16:47

Nothing closed when your area was 40 degrees? That’s weird. Lots of things closed around me. School was already out I think but transport shut down. Places didn’t open. The roads were deserted

itispersonal · 18/06/2025 16:59

I think a lot of people forget how hot a classroom can be with 32 bodies, direct sun and no breeze. The kids are hot, bothered and grumpy it isn’t a pleasant experience!

know that isn’t just relatable to classrooms but many building have air con etc.

Though I’m not finding it too bad at the moment! The madness of the late 30s temperature a couple of years back is still a torment in my mind!

17years · 18/06/2025 17:00

I don't mind the heat generally but working in it can be unbearable. In many jobs there's just no way to keep cool. I work in a nursery and we have air con now but that's new this year, previous years have been horrendous. We have a full wall of glass bifold doors in every room, the sun shines in for much of the day and it's like being in a greenhouse! We have to wear our usual uniform and obviously can't 'take it easy' in any way as the children still need the same levels of care- in fact more so in some cases as they're so uncomfortable hot and miserable, the poor things!

Forthemarket · 18/06/2025 17:01

I got sunstroke a few years ago - in my classroom. The lack of air flow and the wall of windows ensured it reached 40 plus for a run of afternoons!

ginasevern · 18/06/2025 17:11

I don't understand the drama either. For god sake, it only lasts about 3 days - maybe 5 at most. Then it reverts to months of rain and grey skies. The only time it lasted all summer was 1976, which was infamous, and 1995 was pretty good too if I remember rightly. I lived in Italy for years and they generally don't have any more air conditioning than we do in the UK. They seem to cope.

Belladog1 · 18/06/2025 17:15

I'm not losing my mind, but the dogs are not getting walkies.

I can't take them in the mornings before work as one dog makes monkey noises very loudly, and im not keen on walking in the dark as I live in a remote area with no street lights. It's a bit creepy!!!

FanofLeaves · 18/06/2025 17:15

It was baking today in London, and I STILL saw teenagers with coats on. WHYYYYYY

It doesn’t get dark till really late though?! It’s the longest daylight of the entire year. Walk your poor dogs.

Flensburg · 18/06/2025 17:17

Because we don't have air con.

Saaaaame. Blazers underneath too. Bizarre.

Waitingfordoggo · 18/06/2025 17:18

@Belladog1 I am laughing at the idea of your dog making monkey noises on his walk. How cute! I walk my boy in the evening while it’s like this as it doesn’t get dark until 10pm now where I am. I do live very close to a lovely beach to walk him on though which is really lovely in the evening.

2003 and 2018 all had exceptionally hot summers too.

I live in the south so we DO get it for months at a time.

I bloody love it, but I'm lucky to live in an old house.

I don't understand the noise thing.
I walk mine at 5am then dog walker takes them to the river during the day.

Yes and the sun rises at 4.48!

It’s hard to get up early to fit a dog walk in but unless you leave for work at 5am (in which case you wouldn’t have a dog?) it just needs to be done.

Meadowfinch · 18/06/2025 17:28

I don't understand it either.

Our office was 24 this afternoon, hardly roasting, yet someone insisted they needed the air conditioning on. Did I want to sit in a freezing draft and get a cold? Funnily enough, no so I moved to a meeting room, opened the window, closed the blinds and had a drink of water. Sorted.

Why do people make such a fuss? It's a bit of summer warmth, not a National crisis.

Pedallleur · 18/06/2025 17:31

Yet people want to fly to Dubai/Greece/Turkey where it may be hotter. Oddly, lots of people who WFH suddenly seem to be missing in action. Phones off/out of office/in a long meeting.

Delatron · 18/06/2025 17:33

I think there are ways to deal with this heat that we don’t get that often.

I feel for people on the tube, outdoor workers etc.

But it was so lovely around 9am today walking around town- just a pleasant heat. And it will cool down later. Use fans, splash cold water on your face.

We need to take tips from our S..European neighbours. If it can be avoided don’t try and do anything outdoors in the midday heat. Seek shade, hydrate etc.

It is too hot at night I’ll admit that! But my tower fan is taking the edge off and I’m far happier this time of year and just so pleased it’s not cold and wet.

If it could get back down to 24/25 and stay there then that would be perfect..

Snorlaxo · 18/06/2025 17:36

Do you live in a place with aircon and other measures to make the heat more bearable ? In the surface of it 29 is nothing but schools are super hot because of a lack of ventilation (have you seen how little windows open?) and playgrounds often don’t have shady areas to cool down.

wordywitch · 18/06/2025 17:37

Because people like any excuse to moan 😄

Do you mean the South of Italy? Lucky you! I bloody love it too (the heat and the South of Italy).
