Why is everyone losing their mind about 28 degrees?

All I have seen online today are calls for schools to shut, activities to be called off, and some sort of national emergency to be declared over a few hot days.

3 years ago we got to 40 degrees where I am, and nothing closed. What’s the madness about this time?

I agree that schools should not be mithering on about blazers, and water should be available, and sports day in full sun is probably foolish. But really, closing?

I think a lot of people forget how hot a classroom can be with 32 bodies, direct sun and no breeze. The kids are hot, bothered and grumpy it isn’t a pleasant experience!

know that isn’t just relatable to classrooms but many building have air con etc.

Though I’m not finding it too bad at the moment! The madness of the late 30s temperature a couple of years back is still a torment in my mind!

Yes, the fact classroom windows are only able to be opened by 2 inches and even with a fan on, door open to hot corridor and noise, 30 students in a room, not ideal. I go home feeling after these days of high temperatures! The design of modern academies is awful, they're like greenhouses to save heat in winter.

As horrible as it is, it doesn't warrant closing, but the option of ac would be bliss. Xxx

I don't understand it either.

Our office was 24 this afternoon, hardly roasting, yet someone insisted they needed the air conditioning on. Did I want to sit in a freezing draft and get a cold? Funnily enough, no so I moved to a meeting room, opened the window, closed the blinds and had a drink of water. Sorted.

Why do people make such a fuss? It's a bit of summer warmth, not a National crisis.

You do know that’s not how you catch a cold?

Coffeeteasugar · 18/06/2025 20:58

I work in a school. The kids are grumpy as hell and it’s warm, but none of the classrooms I’ve been in so far have been too warm yet! I hate the heat, but I don’t actually think it’s been too bad so far. Mainly because the skies have been clear, so it’s not been as muggy as usual. 40 degrees a few years ago we gave up teaching, turned off all electrics, let them put their feet into their trays full of cool water and I kept spraying them down like tiny wilting plants. We just did lots of reading and colouring and chatting.

I don't mind hot days too much, but sticky nights are miserable. That said, we were going to my university library on Saturday, but have looked at the temperatures and thought better of it. We'd be going by train; it's not unheard of for rails to buckle in temperatures of 30c. In that event, we could be looking at delays, cancellations and the dreaded rail replacement bus. We are not old (60s) but we aren't in the best health - I'm waiting for an appointment with the asthma nurse. So we are off to a cafe near home instead...at least we won't have to worry what getting home will look like.

TheMoth · 18/06/2025 21:21

I love the heat. It makes me happy. I run in it and everything.

But teaching in it is a v different story.

Miss, it's too hot.
Are the windows open?
Why haven't you got a fan?
Can I have a minute outside?
I feel sick
Can I go fill my water bottle?
I need the toilet.
Omg I'm sweating.
Stinks in here.
Can't go in there, it's too hot.
Do we finish early if it's hot?
Can't do any work in this heat.
We shouldn't be in school in this heat.
My mate's school is doing ....

X 32. X6.

Happy for school to stay open, but tell your kids to stop whining at their teachers and just get on with the work. We don't actually build the schools, or choose the classrooms we're in.

wastingtimeonhere · 18/06/2025 22:01

As a kid I loved hot summer days at school, out on the school field for lessons. At infant school, we had storytime sat under the tree in the 'garden'. It was a small strip behind the buildings. As a small child it seemed big. I've seen old photographs..it really wasn't..
Schools now just don't seem to have the flexibility to be agile in teaching. It's sad that kids can't enjoy the nice days.
As an adult I want 'MH garden day cant be arsed days ' bit like a MH duvet day, but can take in summer as soon as there is a nice day..We can't book AL at that short notice..
😉😆 if we blink we might miss summer.
I'm not walking the dog, she is large with thick double coat. I've just been playing in the garden with the hosepipe with her now its cooler. She does 'enrichment' in this weather, Search games, sniffing. Missing a walk for a couple of days won't kill her, she has access to the garden all day with shady spots.

It happens every year. I start seeing the phrase 'in this heat' on MN each year when it reaches about 16 degrees.

What are you eating in this heat?
What are you wearing in this heat? Etc

It's a wonder how anyone copes

Yes, but asking what you are eating/wearing in this vaguely warm weather doesn’t have nearly the same dramatic effect.

Vivalavibe · 18/06/2025 22:15

It’s weather-concern-changeover-week in our house. Husband is from a Mediterranean country and I spend most of the year with him and his mum telling me the children will come to some great harm as a consequence of me taking them outside or making them walk to places in the deathly cold/rain/snow. I do the whole “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes” schtick, roll my eyes, and fetch the wellies.

Fast forward to today. I’ve been terrified that the baby will collapse from dehydration and that the toddler will get sunstroke. I swear I nearly fainted on the nursery run. We were all about an inch deep in factor 50. Husband and MIL are, meanwhile, loving the sunshine and think I’ve gone mad. MIL even told me that I’m exaggerating the risk of sunburn because “their skin will adapt”.

We’ll be doing this debate until October, when cold fear default mode will be reinstated, and my English genetics will regain the upper hand. 😂

PassOnThat · 18/06/2025 22:20

The answer is grass. We live in a city where a lot of our neighbours have paved or put artificial grass over the small "postage stamp" gardens. My mother and MIL both thought we should do do the same to ours but we kept the grass.

It's great in hot weather. We put a gazebo over most of the garden, hose down the grass so it's essentially sodden, put a waterproof picnic blanket on top and suddenly there's somewhere cool to sit, work and rest.

We need more grassy spots. An area of grass and trees instantly cools down the surrounding area.

Might get up to 30 degrees at the weekend and no let up forecast. 😑
I want it gone!

It's cooling down Monday onwards for a few days before hotting up again. At least here anyway.

I agree with you. The media sensation about the heat doesn’t help either. Ffs it’s summer, we get heatwaves every year. I actually like it. I struggle way more with cold weather and can’t get warm AND that lasts for much longer. Shutting schools etc is not necessary

Quite a lot of people with health conditions are very vulnerable in a heatwave though. It's not scaremongering

Us Brits like to have something to moan about and it's usually the weather, too hot, too cold, snow, rain, winds and the media makes it worse with their warnings.

We never used to have people telling us how to stay cool in summer or wrap up warm in winter. It's common sense which disappeared all of a sudden.

I'm not in the UK, but agree about the common sense. Whenever it gets hot there is advice on how to deal with it - yet somehow our parents, grandparents, and beyond seemed to manage without being told what to do. And the constant weather warnings - understandable if it's bad enough for a red warning, the rest of it is just perfectly normal weather!

treesfalling · 18/06/2025 23:10

But so much of the advice is targeted at the elderly?

treesfalling · 18/06/2025 23:15

I like the heat but in London in an office without air con? Nope

Yes, the elderly who know how to cope with the heat! I'm heading towards elderly myself btw.

What the fuck is this bollocks?!

treesfalling · 18/06/2025 23:25

And by heat I mean 27 degrees plus. I enjoy anything under that.

treesfalling · 18/06/2025 23:27

It's still the group with the highest mortality so I'm not sure it's about how well one can cope...

I'm not losing my mind, but the dogs are not getting walkies.

I can't take them in the mornings before work as one dog makes monkey noises very loudly, and im not keen on walking in the dark as I live in a remote area with no street lights. It's a bit creepy!!!

Surely you can walk them either before work (unless you start at 4.30am) or after. I took mine for 3 shorter walks if half an hour today (before, lunch -in the woods and in the eve). No balls lots of water

I think you need time off your algorithms.

They've been on their walk. I'm not a bad furry parent. They went at 7.30pm.

As I said in my post, I can't take them early. My cockapoo makes noises on a scale you wouldn't believe. Loud monkey noises for about 5 mins out of pure excitement. I don't think the neighbours would be amused!

I waited until the temperature dropped this evening and took them out into the back fields.

Gattopardo · 18/06/2025 23:35

It’s all very daft, and I have very hairy dogs and kids in schools without air con.

You walk your dogs before 10. You don’t make pupils wear polyester black blazers during the school day, and maybe move classes outside into the shade.

Like when the snow falls, we are basically an embarrassment. Just goddam get on with it. There are kids walking 5k to school in 30c heat on the regular in many countries. No aircon when they arrive.

It gets light at about 4.30 at the moment. What time do you get up that it is still dark?
