What phobia do you NOT have that so many others do?

What will you gladly do that other people are terrified of?

I'm not claustrophobic at all. I love small, dark, enclosed, underground spaces. I recently visited the Speedwell Cavern in Derbyshire which has an underground river going through a very narrow tunnel, which you go along in a boat. I went there as a child, and as an adult, it seems even narrower now, and I loved it.

No fear of dental treatment, flying, the dark, eating alone in a restaurant, needles, rodents, spiders (although I don't pick up big ones with my hands). But I do have a fear of nausea and vomiting and empty swimming pools make my legs go wobbly. And the thought of potholing... I can't go there.

I’m not bothered by public speaking. Don’t ask me to phone someone though, I’d far rather give a 1 hour lecture to 400 students than phone to make an appointment.

I don’t mind snakes, mice, flying or heights. I can’t even watch other people caving on TV.

Yes, likewise re 400 students vs the phone. And tv caving. I was watching a tv documentary about Stonehenge that showed people mining flint for tools in small underground tunnels and nearly hyperventilated.

aspidernamedfluffy · 15/06/2025 23:05

I'll quite happily pick a spider up no matter what the size.

I don’t know that many people have a severe phobia of them, as opposed to just not liking/being a bit scared, but I really have no issue at all with wasps.

I don’t know why, because I’m completely pathetic about spiders.

I'm the complete opposite of you.

Gingercar · 15/06/2025 22:08

I don’t run away screaming when a wasp comes near me. I’m always surprised at how many people do.

Me too used to when I was a kid but now now

happyfluffyluckykitty · 15/06/2025 23:44

I love spiders, snakes, moths, scorpions and wasps. I feed the wasps jam in the summer so they're happy and don't venture into the kitchen. I've had pet tarantulas and scorpions and I have two snakes. I love all creepy crawlies and spiders are welcome in my home, even the false widows. Never had a problem with any of them. I don't kill ants either. I might draw the line at bedbugs or cockroaches, but we dont get them anyway.

Xmasbaby11 · 15/06/2025 23:47

No problem with the sound or smell of people eating near me. One of my friends was telling me she couldn’t bear the sound of someone eating an apple.

sweetkitty · 15/06/2025 23:51

I love spiders and will pick them up no problem, same with snakes, and most bugs.
not scared of needles with happily inject myself, same with blood, guts etc

i hate people eating near me and I’m terrified of slugs.

angelandspike · 16/06/2025 00:04

Not bothered about blood at all, great in an emergency
if your leg is hanging off ring me, on the other hand if there’s a mouse or dead bird I’ll be away screaming

BumpyaDaisyevna · 16/06/2025 00:35

Blood/ needles/ surgery - can happily watch operations on tv etc when others are shielding their eyes when the scalpel goes in and the surgeon is rummaging around - I just find it fascinating!

Judiezones · 16/06/2025 00:38

Heights, spiders, snakes don't bother me one bit.
I run a mile from an earthworm though.

BashfulClam · 16/06/2025 00:39

No problem with spiders which is good as husband is terrified of them, no issue with heights. Loved tall buildings in NYC, would like to do a skydive.

i am terrified of small spaces, or any space I can’t see the way out of. Fire. Anything that wriggles…

louderthan · 16/06/2025 00:40

Spiders. Don’t care how big they are, I’ll coax them out, picking them up if I need to.

doglover4ever · 16/06/2025 00:44

MiloMinderbinder925 · 15/06/2025 22:23

Talk to people and assert how I feel.

My response as well! Am happy to answer front door, phone ,chat with neighbours and just be sociable!

Ferretedaway · 16/06/2025 00:49

I’m fine with spiders, snakes, enclosed, tight spaces , injections, anaesthetics, flying, helicopter rides, rodents, heights.

Absolutely terrified of cable cars, couldn’t parachute or abseil or picking up any dead creature, even with a spade or brush and shovel. Also when birds accidently fly indoors and are flapping about, that freaks me out.

Andoutcomethewolves · 16/06/2025 00:54

Spiders, heights, flying, public speaking/ training at work, having bloods taken, smear tests (my sister hasn't had one for 30 years... I don't see the issue), having to put animals out of their misery (eg mixamatosis (sp?) rabbits, reacting when someone is being aggressive or a dick (whether that means punching them or calling them out - I realise this makes me sound like a dick myself but I can't let bad behaviour go unacknowledged! Only ever punched two men and they punched my husband first so I'm not naturally aggressive but I will defend people I care about).

I am however majorly claustrophobic so some of the PPs posts are my idea of hell! I also can't do boats - the last time I was on a ferry I had a full on panic attack.

Strokethefurrywall · 16/06/2025 01:12

I’m a little phobic with spiders, but take steps and have held tarantulas before.
I hate, hate, hate crabs though. Live in a country with massive land crabs and they freak me the fuck out. Especially after the first rains of the season and you find them on your porch tapping on the windows like creepy scuttling hard shell spider fuckers.

NeedyTiger · 16/06/2025 01:34

I have no phobia of heights or needles at all nor spiders but spiders give me the jiggers like the feel of multiple tiny legs touching me makes me want to puke and the sight of tiny holes makes me rage and want to bite them but I don't fear them however I have an unhealthy irrational fear of phone calls especially at night time but I have a very good reason for this though and it has something to do with my PTSD

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/06/2025 01:40

Spiders, snakes or insects
Birds on the other hand..

scalt · 16/06/2025 09:07

I don't like a lot of the body stuff, like blood tests. I have a coping mechanism of "zoning out" during unpleasant stuff like injections and dental treatment, as long as I don't have to do anything; I just make my mind go blank and wait for it to pass.

I don't mind heights at all, I love activities like Go Ape.

Berlinlover · 21/07/2025 10:08

I have no issue with having an MRI.

ArghMyEars · 21/07/2025 10:13

Don't mind smear tests at all. Would rather have 50 smear tests back to back than go to the dentist.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/07/2025 10:15

Rats! Dd had one as a pet when she was a student, of course he (Dave!) stayed with us in the holidays. He was so tame and friendly, would sometimes sit on my shoulder when I was busy in the kitchen, making friendly little ratty noises. Dd used to take him to the pub, snuggled in her jumper. He enjoyed sharing a packet of crisps.

ohyesido · 21/07/2025 10:16

Bodily fluids

Spiders - there’s one living next to my bed, right by my head, and it doesn’t bother me at all.

Sweet Jesus. Good on you though.

I'm terrified of spiders. Especially tarantulas. I would simpy die, shit myself or both.

Having said that, I have no fear of sharks, tigers, lions, bears - not to be arrogant as they are incredibly powerful animals - but I would swim with a shark before I'd have a tarantula anywhere near me!!
