What phobia do you NOT have that so many others do?

What will you gladly do that other people are terrified of?

I'm not claustrophobic at all. I love small, dark, enclosed, underground spaces. I recently visited the Speedwell Cavern in Derbyshire which has an underground river going through a very narrow tunnel, which you go along in a boat. I went there as a child, and as an adult, it seems even narrower now, and I loved it.

Spiders snakes mice - in fact there is no animal at all that makes me panic. I just don’t understand why so many people do.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/06/2025 22:23

Spiders, don’t bother me at all.

PomeloOud · 15/06/2025 22:26

Spiders. I woke up this morning having inadvertently squashed a big one in the night. I found it all smooshed up and stuck to my arm. I felt very guilty. But I also thought of my friend who would completely freak out that there was one in the bed.

I’ll admit I find women (it’s always women) that are hysterical over spiders absolute twits.

My son, to my great annoyance, has a fear of needles, blood draws, injections etc. i just can’t him to snap out of it. It’s self indulgent and silly. He really wants to become a blood donor, but there’s no way he can until he gets over himself.

IHateWasps · 15/06/2025 22:27

Spiders. I love spiders.

I am fine with blood and injections. I happily sat and watched the last blood test being taken. The human body is amazing. Ive also given blood over 40 times. I am scared of spiders, but love mice and rats. Snakes dont scare me but I wouldn't queue to pet one....

Oh yes, blood and needles are things I’m totally fine with as well.
I’ve only given blood once and I can’t anymore for health reasons, but I’m fine with blood tests and vaccines etc.

But despite being fine with any kind of gore/blood/injury, I am severely emetophobic (fear of vomiting).

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 15/06/2025 22:11

Spiders, wasps. No problem.

Am terrified of dead birds though. It is so, so irrational. I get how people who are frightened of spiders and wasps feel.

We have a massive front window and every year fledglings fly into it and break their necks. I will shake and cry when picking them up even with a carrier bag over the body and a litter picker… no way could I make contact with my actual hand.

I’m scared of dead birds too! I didn’t realise other people were as I never mention it to anyone 😂 I hate birds nests too.

TheOliveFinch · 15/06/2025 22:30

Spiders and snakes don’t bother me but I’m really claustrophobic but specifically if there is no space around me or my face, fine in a lift on my own but would hate a crowded one, feel panicky if a jumper is tight going over my head

SecondWoman · 15/06/2025 22:30

Bees, wasps, spiders, the dark, answering the door, unexpected callers, meeting new people, public speaking, giving blood, injections.

My actual phobias are things the vast majority of people do without thinking twice.

DeSoleil · 15/06/2025 22:33

Flying, birds and driving on motorways. I love all three.

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2025 22:33

Snakes and spiders, not a problem.

Heights I can't do.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 15/06/2025 22:33

I have no fear of spiders, heights, needles (I’m a regular blood donor) or public speaking (I’m very good at it).

Can’t do enclosed spaces though. The very idea of caving/potholing makes me feel panicky.

GreenMarigold · 15/06/2025 22:34

I don’t care about needles and like to watch my blood being taken.

Also happy to handle insects, spiders, snakes, etc.

Enclosed spaces and heights don’t really bother me.

HangingOver · 15/06/2025 22:34

Not phobia exactly but I don't have a visceral reaction to blood, wounds, puke or poo. Inexplicably, seeing a real or even a video of a live octopus moving around will make my palms sweat and I'll start gagging.

Also randomly terrified of empty swimming pools.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 15/06/2025 22:34

Flying, heights, spiders etc don't bother me at all.

I'm utterly, utterly terrified of lightning however.

Berlinlover · 15/06/2025 22:36

I’ve no issue with having CT scans. I was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and have lost count of the number of CT scans I’ve had.

I'm scared of any dead animal! Not bugs but anything bigger e.g. a bird or a mouse I could not touch or even look at. If next door's cat kills a bird and leaves it in our garden I have to get DH to deal with it.

Weirdly then.... I'm not squeamish at all about the human body. No issue with blood, I'm fascinated by watching operations and when my grandparents etc died I was comfortable around their bodies in the hospital and funeral home so I've no idea why I'm fine with a dead human but not a rat! 🤣

scalt · 15/06/2025 22:42

With patients nervous about CT scans, I remember a comment in New Scientist that a simple solution may be to turn the patients over, and have them lie face down instead of up, like people who explore narrow caves do, crawling on their stomach: then they don’t see the tube around them. There was an accompanying cartoon of a CT patient wearing a hard hat, like a cave explorer.

Not bothered by bugs, animals, birds, reptiles, thunderstorms, the dark, injections, blood, vomiting, heights as long as I'm secured by full arrest gear (rappelling is huge fun), lots of small holes...I could rescue a spider from a room filled with snakes during a thunderstorm and abseil down a cliff with it in a jar (so as not to hurt the poor thing), no problem.

I dislike clowns a lot but it's not a phobia, I get stage fright when I've mistimed the adrenaline rush that makes performing a real blast - but the one thing I can't abide is the feeling of being trapped, so I always know my exits and avoid human herd type situations wherever possible.

So I'm pretty bombproof - outside the deepest tube stations at rushhour or shopping centres before Christmas.

mindingmyown37 · 15/06/2025 22:43

I’ll remove spiders, but only if someone sees it, if it’s just me I leave it to roam, everyone freaks out in my house or kills them, I simply-ly can not so I catch and release.

Finally one i can use. I was reading through feeling pathetic because im scared of everything but ct scans, mri or anything hospital based im not scared of pretty much spent my whole life in and out of hospital

Onacuctustree · 15/06/2025 22:47

Hohofortherobbers · 15/06/2025 22:12

I'm fine with spiders and wasps

Slugs make my skin crawl though

Totally the same.
Happily pick up the biggest spider.

Slugs... Urghhh

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 15/06/2025 22:48

Bees, wasps, coffins (could also sleep in one if it was made comfy), storms, snakes...

But terrified of spiders ,flying and four poster beds. The enormity of them freaks me out. I can also feel very weird around very large buildings such as cathedrals.

Chemenger · 15/06/2025 22:49

I’m not bothered by public speaking. Don’t ask me to phone someone though, I’d far rather give a 1 hour lecture to 400 students than phone to make an appointment.

I don’t mind snakes, mice, flying or heights. I can’t even watch other people caving on TV.

Jollyjollyjollygoodie · 15/06/2025 22:49

Spiders are cool, they catch flies!

Hoooray · 15/06/2025 22:53

I'm not at all scared of snakes, mice, rats, bats and other such critters. I actively like them.

I'm not scared of wasps or spiders. Happy to leave spiders in the house, will remove wasps with a cup and an envelope if necessary.

I'm not anxious or faint about blood or injury, I can deal with such things in a very calm and practical way. No issue with needles, giving blood etc.

I'm fine with public speaking and giving presentations, it doesn't phase me at all.

(I am extremely bad with heights, that's definitely my worst phobia)
