I'm currently stuck in my porch

Because I picked up my work keys, instead of my house keys, and shut the house door behind me, before I unlocked the front door.

DS asleep, not answering his phone. Banging on the door not woken him up. Called/messaged a friend who has a key, but no reply yet.

Sunday plans gone slightly wrong!

I've hidden a spare set in the porch, between the two doors.

And I've finally made it to the allotment 😁

You could get a key safe with a combination lock. We all have them. It also means if someone has an accident inside , alone and can’t get to the door, emergency services can get easy access rather than smash a door or window. I also put a house key on every set of keys.

This is a deadly fire hazard and against the law in rented properties because it's so dangerous. You need to have a thumb lock installed on the inside of the outer door so you can always at least get out of the house even if you can't get back in. Be grateful this didn't happen as you were running out of a burning house.

While I agree in principle that a thumb lock is better for fire safety, it's not always good for security. If it's next to a glass panel, someone can just smash that and reach in and open your door. I have this exact setup and chose the thumb turn anyway as I'm more paranoid about a fire than a break-in.

My parents, however, have this exact setup - ironically, the fire brigade came to do property inspections recently and my dad managed to lock himself in the porch while a fireman stood outside laughing at him! 😂

Thankfully my mum came and rescued him quickly. They don't actually normally lock the outside door - it's just used to deposit parcels for delivery and is too small for coats or shoes. The paranoia about getting stuck between the doors was enough for them to just leave the outer door unlocked. In hindsight, a key box would probably be a better idea!

Their property is rented, so I don't imagine it's actually against the law.

Reminds me of the afternoon we arrived home after school run. We opened the garage door, which was our entrance door. On the floor Behind the letterbox were narrow lengths of wood. My blood ran cold, shocked I tried to work out what was happening, had we been burgled???
I ran through the house, everything looked ok. The gate at the side of the house was locked so I couldn't understand how the wood had been taken from the front garden and thrown on the garage floor!!!
Then my 16 yr old son came home, and explained why what and how

Turned out the security gate on the side of the house wasnt secure, as being slim he was able to slip through the little open circle design in the centre of the wrought iron work!
He had collected the wood, passed it thru the letterbox and attempted to hit/nudge the thumb screw yale lock to open the garage door.
He'd succeeded in the past but this time it thwarted every attempt and he was well and truly locked out.
My neighbour saw him sitting on the doorstep, took pity on him and invited him in for tea, literally fed him like the fatted calf!

Needless to say, our security methods were improved having seen how easy the door was to jemmy open!

6 months later my eldest son went out, and knowing his brother never had his key, he decided to text him to let him know the door key was under the snow, on the garden wall 3 bricks from the right.

Brother slept at his mates that night so never used thd key. We knew nothing of the fact it was under the snow, till 3 days later when eldest asked where the key was....

On the 3rd brick from the right, in full view of the footpath...... after a thorough thaw!

When you have kids you can never assume everything is locked down!

I started picking last week. Maybe yours are an autumn variety.

My autumn ones are ready. The summer ones are too.
They were included in my trifle tonight.

years ago one of the girls that worked for me did the same. Being a very reliable employee I was getting really worried when she didn’t turn up for work. Mobiles were fairly new so the poor girl was in there for 8 hours until her mum got home from work 😂

Happy to hear that rescue is imminent- you definitely need to replace the locks.

I did wonder whether this was going to be a thread about Half Man Half Biscuit lyrics…

Strangely, I was thinking about Half Man Half Biscuit the other day. Thank you for the reminder. Time flies by, and all that

I visited a client for work and thought it was unusual that their receptionist wasn't in. As I was waiting to be seen in reception, she called in to say she was going to be late because her partner had gone to work and locked the door behind him but she'd left her door key in her car and she couldn't get out! She was having to wait for him to come home to let her out! They lived in a flat so there was no chance to use another door or window!

Ikiduknot · 23/06/2025 15:54

@Suecee got to love ‘em! Least he asked about the key, could have been there til next snowy day!

Suecee · 24/06/2025 12:38

Totally. I wasnt happy. Im one key away from a jailer in the way I keep this place locked up.
Both entrance doors are locked as soon as they shut, so finding the key in plain sight, you can imagine I had a minor melt down... no snow within 30ft after that!
🤣😂🤣
We live in a quiet area, no crime, the odd speeder, but i believe in prevention over cure.
Neighbour opposite had an amazon delivery, I wondered if it was actually mine, mis-posted as my app said he was imminent. Checked her doorway and the packet was too big for the letterbox. Stuck 10" out of the door.
I removed it and took it home. She's a dog groomer, with her phone number on her signage, so I rang to let her know id retrieved the packet.
Turned out she was on holiday, her mum is a nurse and was house sitting but working till late night.
If I hadn't acted there's no doubt it would have been snatched as her door is only 6' from the pavement behind a low privet hedge.

I told her, when we protect our neighbours we protect our area. The last thing you want is thieves seeing the street as a good hunting ground.

Having each other's backs saves everyone's heart ache.
