I'm currently stuck in my porch

Because I picked up my work keys, instead of my house keys, and shut the house door behind me, before I unlocked the front door.

DS asleep, not answering his phone. Banging on the door not woken him up. Called/messaged a friend who has a key, but no reply yet.

Sunday plans gone slightly wrong!

@MrsMoastyToasty are we fans of the same R4 show…

I could spend a happy few hours stuck in a porch chatting with Jim!

I thought you must be drunk. I’ve slept in a porch before as opening the other door felt like too much of a struggle.

talk us through what you have in your handbag other than the wrong keys. Any snacks?

I love free the porch one!

I was on route to my allotment so had a box to put my raspberries in, and nothing else.

Sorry this made me chuckle. 😂 Im glad youre being rescued!

Pearl97 · 15/06/2025 09:42

This would be me. A box to put raspberries in to keep me alive!

I hope your friend can rescue you quickly. No doubt this has brightened her Sunday.

I’m glad we could keep you company and that you have a fab friend. I hope your raspberry crop is good!

Monstersfromtheid · 15/06/2025 09:43

Yippee! While you are waiting for her to turn up, have a think of ways to not get stuck again. (Extra house key on the work key ring? Key safe in the porch?)

ThatLilacTiger · 15/06/2025 09:44

This is a deadly fire hazard and against the law in rented properties because it's so dangerous. You need to have a thumb lock installed on the inside of the outer door so you can always at least get out of the house even if you can't get back in. Be grateful this didn't happen as you were running out of a burning house.

Key safe is a good idea….might do that myself

glad you are to be freed, have a a lovely rest of your day

Satisfiedkitty · 15/06/2025 09:46

I'm going to put a spare key in the porch. It's actually the first time I've ever split my work and home keys - actual story is that I accidentally fell in love with a denim dress from Next on Friday, and bought it because I was having a stressful work day. Perfect for the allotment. But no pockets. So didn't want to take a massive bunch of keys.

Dresses without pockets should be illegal!

hello friend - thank you for helping and thank you OP for a lovely thread xx

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 15/06/2025 09:52

Ive just suggested key safe to dh for our porch, thinking we just need a key to get out (2 different doors with different keys in porch) as we have a key safe to get into the back door at the back door

we can’t see it happening usually but if we do eventually get grandchildren one of them might accidentally shut the inner door behind us….

gingercat02 · 15/06/2025 09:52

Glad you're free @Satisfiedkitty. You are a more glamorous gardener than me, interested in denim dress. My gardener outfit is usually joggers or old stained jeans 🥴

99victoria · 15/06/2025 09:53

Ideally your outside door should be unlockable from the inside without a key. What if you needed to get out in a hurry because of a fire in the night and couldn't find your house keys.
Once you've escaped you might want to think about changing the locks 😊

Enko · 15/06/2025 09:53

Lovely friend you have op.

Hope you are not standing there for too long

Morethanthis71 · 15/06/2025 09:57

Yes OP, we are all now invested in the denim dress!

Free the Porch One!

Laughing emoji needed! Sorry OP!

AndImBrit · 15/06/2025 10:01

This is a terrifying fire hazard! Can you change the locks so that the outside door is thumb turn on the inside or so the porch door doesn’t auto lock?

Even leaving a key in the porch is fallible as it could get moved out and misplaced.

FiveBeatRiff · 15/06/2025 10:05

I once had to sneak through my parents house to free my boyfriend (now DH) who got trapped in the porch while making his escape at 6am and called me in a panic 😂

FiveBeatRiff · 15/06/2025 10:05

I'm glad you're free op, and that you have some good friends!

Oh dear 🤣 this happened to me once, my then 3 year old closed the door as I went to get the post. No one had spare keys and my son was on the other side of the door. Luckily for me there was a random golf club also in the porch and I managed to smash the little glass window.

If DS is asleep, sit down and start to relax, my experience is as soon as I relax one of three DS I have will come looking for me with a job they need doing.

Edited

Same 🤣🤣🤣

Yep, front door well and truly locked. Still, good thing is the security is clearly sound. I moved in last year, after a divorce, and it felt safe.

Actually, for a little terrace, it's very solid and no way ds will hear the banging on the door.

Hope not too hot yet...

JamMakingWannaBe · 15/06/2025 10:17

This happened to me and DD! I had to use an umbrella to smash the glass on the inner door - which was a complete nightmare to replace.
As PP, get a thumbturn lock. They are around £40 on Amazon and you can change the cylinder yourself in 5 minutes.

viques · 15/06/2025 10:20

I feel your pain. Due to an anomaly with my porch lock I have to make sure I remove the key before I close the porch door before locking it securely from the inside. Before I got paranoid about remembering to do this I had a couple of embarrassing moments when I had to wait for a respectable looking person ( ie not one in a striped t shirt carrying a bag marked swag) to walk past my house so I could bang on the door and ask them to open it from the outside and give me the keys so I could then access the house.

Bringinguptherear · 15/06/2025 10:22

Well two important lessons learned here:

  1. you need to keep a spare key for your outside door in your porch

  2. NEVER buy a dress without pockets!!
