I'm currently stuck in my porch

Satisfiedkitty · 15/06/2025 09:17

Because I picked up my work keys, instead of my house keys, and shut the house door behind me, before I unlocked the front door.

DS asleep, not answering his phone. Banging on the door not woken him up. Called/messaged a friend who has a key, but no reply yet.

Sunday plans gone slightly wrong!

Glad you've been released from your prison OP!

Yes okay I see that now. I have ASD and take things very literally, so when it said in the OP she shut it before she unlocked the front door I thought that meant she had unlocked the front door. Obviously it doesn’t mean that when you think about the actual situation.

Edited

OP said they are LOCKED in the porch! Take that literally! 😂 ASD pha!

Free the Porch One!

@mnhq this is why we still need the laugh reaction Grin

Glad your friend was around @Satisfiedkitty!

A hell of a long time ago, this exact situation was one of those ‘A weird thing happened to me’ features in the Guardian, I think — only she was stuck in the porch for ages, I think, maybe overnight? Maybe pre-mobiles and not visible to passersby, and I have a feeling it was the weekend, so the first time she knew she’d be missed was at work on Monday…

Wallywobbles · 15/06/2025 10:35

Find my phone alarm? Time to set up your emergency contacts so that you can set that off. I’ve done it by mistake but DD1 has had a couple of car crashes where it was automatically set off. Woke us all up (in different places) at 5am.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2025 10:38

Does the dress have side seams in the skirt part? Is it a normal seam (done with an overlocker). If so then a place that does alterations would be able to insert a pocket for you. If it's french seamed like jeans then I'm not sure how easy it would be.

I'm glad you're out, enjoy your raspberries. Grin

gavisconismyfriend · 15/06/2025 10:41

Maybe put a key box in the porch rather than just a key - more secure

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2025 10:41

Also, I find those little coloured plastic key caps that you get from the locksmith very useful for identifying which key is which with a glance.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 15/06/2025 10:43

@Satisfiedkitty I know you are being rescued now but for future reference if your son has an IPhone and you share location you can set a very loud siren off on his phone in the Find My IPhone app. It sounds even if the phone is on silent or has a flat battery! You just open the app click on his device and it sounds continuously until they pick up the phone and enter their passcode/Face ID.

Inertia · 15/06/2025 10:44

Happy to hear that rescue is imminent- you definitely need to replace the locks.

I did wonder whether this was going to be a thread about Half Man Half Biscuit lyrics…

FortyElephants · 15/06/2025 10:44

I have a spare key to the inner door hidden in my porch and also a key safe with a spare set for both doors on the front. I also have my DS's phone on my 'find my' app on the iCloud so if I really have to get his attention I ping the lost phone noise and that does the job.

InterestedDad37 · 15/06/2025 10:45

Glad you're being rescued - I was about to encourage you to embrace your new life in the porch, and suggest a few ideas for sustainable living in such an environment 😁

Look on the bright side. At least you’ve got a porch and don’t just have to stand outside, especially if it happened to be raining!
Seriously, I think we’ve all done that. The good thing is, you learn from it. Since I did it, every time I go out now, that scenario pops into my head and I think (hope) that due to that, I’ll be unlikely to do it again 🤞

I now have Free Nelson Mandela as an earworm

Are you so blind that you cannot see?

Are you so deaf that you cannot hear her plea?

I once had to sneak through my parents house to free my boyfriend (now DH) who got trapped in the porch while making his escape at 6am and called me in a panic 😂

This is terrific! Made me laugh so much! I can imagine the panic.

But if there were no porch, she’d just have locked herself out, and would be at liberty to ring the doorbell to wake her son, if she needed to get back in to get her keys, or just go off and do whatever she was planning to do until her son woke up, or go and pick up a spare key from friends! Her problem is that she couldn’t get back in, but couldn’t get out either!

NescafeAndIce · 15/06/2025 10:58

This should be sent to clothing manufacturer as proof of the risk to life when they make dresses without pockets!

The fact that your husband has had TWO crashes would worry me more than the consequences of the alarm being set off!

Needless post that will just upset the person you directed it at.

Iheartmysmart · 15/06/2025 11:02

Happened to a friend of mine but she didn’t even have her phone on her to call for help. Luckily the postie came along after a couple of hours and she shouted out to him through the letterbox for help. Obviously she had no contact numbers so the postman had to call reception at her husband’s place of work to get a message to him to return home and let her out. It was the source of great amusement for quite some time at his office.

SlipperyLizard · 15/06/2025 11:06

I did the same when I was at Uni, all my housemates were out and it was the days before mobile phones. Luckily it was an old semi with leaded windows either side of the inner door, I eventually managed to prize the lead off a small panel and put my hand through to let myself in. Not a good advert for leaded windows but was very glad they were there!

Tigergirl80 · 15/06/2025 11:11

I’ve had visitors get locked in the porch “I’ve usually been home though. Never been locked in myself. Front door is a Yale lock I put the rubbish out 1 morning in my nighty and the front door slammed shut. I had my son staying with me at the time. He has severe autism I didn’t hold much hope of him opening the door for me but he did thank goodness. I now have a key safe in the porch just in case it happens again.

This is a deadly fire hazard and against the law in rented properties because it's so dangerous. You need to have a thumb lock installed on the inside of the outer door so you can always at least get out of the house even if you can't get back in. Be grateful this didn't happen as you were running out of a burning house.

Not really as pp said at least if she was in the street she could have got on with her day and got the spare key from her friend. She was locked in the porch she couldn’t go out or get back into the house. She’s lucky she had her phone our porch gets really hot but we have a window I could climb out of if this happened to me.
