What do you keep in your car

At the grand old age of 33 I've finally passed my driving test and bought my first car 🥳

What essentials do you keep in yours?

I already have a foil blanket on the list and to get a faraday pouch for the car keys. Please hit me with anything else you think is useful/ good for emergencies/ helps keep the car safe

Thank you!

First aid kit
Tyre inflator
High viz vest
Bottles of water
Window emergency breaker/seat belt cutter

We don't tend to have personal things in there as we are a one car household. We so don't commute to work so it's hardly used.

I drive a lot.

In the front:
Phone charger / holder (magnetic)
Hand gel for after petrol stations
Handcream because gel is drying
Microfibre cloth
Tiny tin of coins
Suncream
Contact lens kit and spare glasses (blind as a bat so this is essential)
Sunglasses
Re-usable coffee mug for spontaneous coffee stops or Waitrose

In the boot:
12v tyre inflator - so much better than petrol station ones
Spare screenwash (ran out once on a frosty/salty night on a long journey and nowhere en route had any).
Walking boots and socks (I drive alone a lot and frequently take detours if I see pretty fields of flowers or nice landscapes and go for a spontaneous walk)
Spare bulbs/triangle etc
Foil cover for the windscreen
Bags for life
Waterproof jacket for emergencies (cagoule)

The only thing I keep is a bottle of waiter and a sweet snack (I have type 1 diabetes) and phone charger cable (that connects to car). No idea where my car manual/service record has gone but that would be useful. Flashlight/red triangle….blanket. Don’t keep that stuff but should do. Add your AA/RAC/Green Flag whatever number in to your phone (I need to do that too).

I own absolutely no emergency equipment whatsoever. 😂 My car is filled with 3 boxes of horse stuff, welly boots, possibly the kids welly boots, a bin liner filled with old clothes that was meant to go to the clothes recycling box weeks ago, and swim robe, towel, suit and shoes because I like to swim and I hate to be caught out at a beautiful spot but not able to swim, so often it lives in the car for swim related emergencies.

A phone charging cable and phone holder for sat nav is probably the only essential stuff I own. I’m very basic. 🙈

Walking stick, blue badge, charging cables plus power pack, sunglasses, spare bulbs, jump leads, tyre compressor, wheel brace, bottle jack, locking wheel nut key, hi-viz jacket, walking stick, folding stool, umbrella, folding poncho, fleece jacket, torch, spare batteries (all in case I break down, as I’m disabled and cannot stand at the side of a motorway for hours!).

Fire extinguisher/blanket, first aid kit, bottled water, small gas stove, kettle, tea/coffee/sugar/powdered milk, salt/pepper, mug/plate/bowl/cutlery set, ridge monkey pan, tissues, toilet roll, baby wipes, toothbrush/toothpaste, hairbrush, scrunchie, sun cream, deodorant, hand sanitizer (I’m a regular camper - my car is actually a micro camper van - so all this stuff tends to stay in permanently in a box, as well as my folding bed/bedding, portaloo and window blinds. Handy in all sorts of emergencies though!).

Also currently - dog crate, non-perishable food (couscous, beans, pasta, tuna etc), pop up awning, small folding table, camping chair, change of clothes and about a million bags for life!

narcASD · 15/06/2025 23:20

a couple of old clean towels, hand sanitiser, pack of wipes & tissues, first aid kit (for work), charger, bags for life, oh and two new sage green blinds that are for charity but have been in the boot for about a year!

Spare sunglasses
a pound coin for shopping trolleys
A large bottle of water and a sponge after my windscreen wash froze and I couldn’t see out of the front windscreen
