The inside of my body is shaking.

This is really odd, but over the last few months I’ve noticed what I can only describe as the inside of my body shaking. It’s been happening when I am in bed and relaxing to go to sleep. To begin with I thought it was DH snoring but it happened when he was away. Then I thought it might be the tube, I’m in London and the underground goes nearly underneath my house. But I’ve just experienced the feeling when I’ve been standing up and not at home.

I can’t go to the GP and say my inside bones are shaking, can I? Do I just pretend it’s not happening?

And I was going to go to the GP as I’m menopausal, no period for over a year, but have had period pain and what felt like ovulation. This has been followed by a huge bloated stomach that looks like I’m 7 months pregnant.

Will they think I’ve got health anxiety if I go with both? I don’t think I do, but I’ve had done pretty serious illnesses in my time and I wonder if I do have it now!

I'd go to the GP about both issues.

For the second one, maybe try to Google different ways of describing it, and see if you can narrow it down a bit.

Have you lost a lot of weight recently? Do you feel cold?

I had that and imagined that I had less visceral fat around my organs.

waltzingparrot · 12/06/2025 19:18

Low blood sugar levels ?

Internal tremors? Before you google it can be to do with nerve pain, trapped nerves, bad backs I think. I have it with fibromyalgia but you'd know if you had that.

HibbyW · 12/06/2025 19:29

Just going to follow along as I've had this sensation too. I think. Usually when I'm half awake but I've also had it when I'm awake. Like I'm buzzing inside. It's very hard to describe - but yes, it is a bit like the feeling of a tube rumbling under the ground. Except faster, in my case.

I haven't considered going to the Dr for it.

Orangemintcream · 12/06/2025 19:31

I would absolutely be going for the bloating.

Vaguely aware I’ve heard internal vibration feeling to be associated with Lyme disease. Have you ever been bitten by a tick ?

HibbyW · 12/06/2025 19:32

I just googled internal tremors, which was @Arumlilly suggestion and I think that's what mine are.

Have you had COVID recently OP?

Knackered1 · 12/06/2025 19:33

I had this with an overactive thyroid

Daisydiary · 12/06/2025 19:35

Could it be palpitations?

I have it with MEcfs but I am also fifty and peri/menopausal.

Supersimkin7 · 12/06/2025 19:36

Wind.

12345mummy · 12/06/2025 19:38

I’ve had it and the GP put it down to heart palpitations. It’s mainly the morning after I’ve drank alcohol, it’s like my chest is buzzing

Iambitingmytongue · 12/06/2025 19:40

It can be hormonal. I have had it occasionally since perimenopause. It’s very disconcerting!

wrongthinker · 12/06/2025 19:42

Get your thyroid checked.

QuickScroller · 12/06/2025 19:43

Just had a quick go with ChatGpt on this - hope you get to the bottom of it.

1. The “Internal Shaking” Sensation

This could potentially be linked to:

  • Menopause/perimenopause: Hormonal changes can cause nervous system fluctuations, leading to strange body sensations.
  • Benign fasciculations or essential tremor: Often people only feel them internally.
  • Neurological issues: Like restless leg syndrome or even early signs of something like Parkinson’s or MS (though those are far less likely and usually come with other symptoms).
  • Anxiety/stress-related somatic symptoms: Even if you don’t feel anxious, your body might still react this way.

You’re not imagining it, and the fact that it happens even when you’re not at home rules out external causes like snoring or the tube.

🔹
2. Menopause Symptoms with Abdominal Bloating

Bloating, period-like pain, and ovulation-like symptoms can happen during menopause, but a distended stomach that looks like you’re pregnant warrants a checkup—especially if it’s persistent and new for you.

It might be:

  • Ovarian cysts or fibroids
  • Endometrial changes
  • GI issues like IBS, SIBO, or even something structural
  • Or in rare cases, ovarian cancer (bloating and pain can be symptoms, which is why it’s always worth checking)

You’ve had no period for over a year, so you’re officially post-menopausal. Any kind of “period pain” or bloating that mimics menstrual symptoms now should definitely be looked at.

🔹
3. Worry About Health Anxiety

Even if you did have health anxiety, it wouldn’t mean your symptoms aren’t real. But from what you’ve said, it sounds more like you’re being conscious of not wanting to waste anyone’s time—not that you’re spiraling or obsessing.

Your history of serious illness means you’re attuned to your body. That’s not health anxiety—that’s being proactive about your health.

What to Say to the GP

Here’s a suggestion to help you feel more confident:

“Over the past few months, I’ve been feeling a strange internal shaking sensation—mainly when I’m lying down or trying to sleep, but it’s happened standing up too. I initially thought it was external, but now I’m concerned it might be something internal. Also, I’ve had no periods for over a year but recently experienced period-like pain, ovulation-type symptoms, and extreme bloating. I know these might sound like unrelated things, but they’ve both been worrying me.”

GPs have heard stranger things, and their job is to take these things seriously—even if they turn out to be benign.

sugarland24 · 12/06/2025 19:51

I've had this, and still get it now. At first I thought it was a mini earthquake as I thought the whole bed was shaking but then realised it was just inside and nothing was visibly moving on the outside including my body, so weird, like my whole body is buzzing / vibrating. Always when I'm falling asleep and both times has started after having baby / breastfeeding. I'm still bf second and still get them but less than in the early days after birth so could be hormonal....

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 12/06/2025 20:31

Ffs another menopause thing, I get this too. I’ve accused my DH, DCat and Ddog of being the culprit when I’ve felt it at night

WitchesofPainswick · 12/06/2025 20:34

MewithME · 12/06/2025 19:35

I have it with MEcfs but I am also fifty and peri/menopausal.

Me too - long covid, 50, menopausal. I've often thought it was someone's aircon, or a washing machine on - complained to DH about it several times before I realised it was coming from ME.

dudsville · 12/06/2025 20:36

I get this too but only recently and only when asleep or falling asleep and not daily. I'm mid 50s and post menopause. I would love to know what it is, it's very unsettling!

I have it with fibromyalgia too. It's always worse in the evenings.

Marylou62 · 12/06/2025 21:08

I get a kind of buzz in my abdomen which then usually turns into a hot flush... for me it's an adrenaline rush caused by the dip in hormones because of the menopause...
It's an odd feeling.

I know the poster who asked ChatGPT and then cut and pasted the whole response is just trying to be helpful but u know the OP could have just done that herself, right? Some places on the internet it’s still nice to know you’re being thoughtfully considered by unknown strangers - human ones.

PashaMinaMio · 12/06/2025 21:14

I get tremors but only in my trunk, not my legs & arms. Always in bed.

I put it down to my body getting rid of the adrenaline I stored up during the day. A legacy of anxiety about something?

I don’t worry about it, it doesn’t happen often but if I had any additional symptoms I’d see my GP.
Based on this thread, it’s good to know others experience it too.

Absolutely. It's clogging up a lot of threads lately. If we want AI it's very easy to do, but, as you rightly say, it is nice to have actual human feedback and opinions.

Angelswatchingoverme · 12/06/2025 21:22

I suffer with hashimotos disease which is an autoimmune thyroid condition and get internal tremors so maybe its worth getting it checked? You'd most likely be getting other symptoms though.
