The inside of my body is shaking.

This is really odd, but over the last few months I’ve noticed what I can only describe as the inside of my body shaking. It’s been happening when I am in bed and relaxing to go to sleep. To begin with I thought it was DH snoring but it happened when he was away. Then I thought it might be the tube, I’m in London and the underground goes nearly underneath my house. But I’ve just experienced the feeling when I’ve been standing up and not at home.

I can’t go to the GP and say my inside bones are shaking, can I? Do I just pretend it’s not happening?

And I was going to go to the GP as I’m menopausal, no period for over a year, but have had period pain and what felt like ovulation. This has been followed by a huge bloated stomach that looks like I’m 7 months pregnant.

Will they think I’ve got health anxiety if I go with both? I don’t think I do, but I’ve had done pretty serious illnesses in my time and I wonder if I do have it now!

I get this too. It’s like my insides are reverberating. Normally lasts for a couple of hours then fades as quickly as it came on. I’ve just blamed it on perimenopause.

MewithME · 12/06/2025 21:35

Mine is pretty much all the time but worse when I've overdone it. It's bad right now. It's like bees inside me.

Pinkrabitt · 12/06/2025 21:47

I get this too. Internal tremor. Pretty sure mine is related to stress/anxiety but it can come on at weird times. Again usually while I'm trying to go to sleep. First time I had it I thought it was an earthquake or someone was shaking the bed! I've had it for a few years now. Definitely gets worse when I'm tired, stressed or anxious. I'm also perimenopausal.

I'm so glad I've stumbled on this thread because I've experienced this for a couple of years and thought I was going nuts.

For me it's accompanied by feeling weak and 'watery' like I've no real substance and poor balance (I'm not the most coordinated person at the best of times!) and a craving for sugar, but also nausea and my brain feels sluggish and foggy. I won't drive if I feel like that because I wouldn't trust my reactions.

It's usually when I've slept during the day, not always avoidable due to shifts, I wake feeling like that, or I can fall asleep in the evening but wake minutes later feeling like that but can't get back to sleep. It's like I get a massive shot of adrenaline from nowhere and that is the 'come down'.

When I googled about it came back with a couple of options like sleep inertia, peri menopause or anxiety.

So glad I stumbled on this thread and know I'm not alone!

Wow, thanks so much.

Regarding the tremors, have been incredibly stressed, but I thought I was feeling a lot better, but maybe my body is playing catch up.

I’ve not had COVID for ages, although I have had a vaccine recently.

And yes, it could be one of the wonders of hormones and menopause.

I take levothyroxine, and my bloods have been checked recently so I don’t think it’s that. And I wish I’d have listened to weight, rather the opposite.

I did Google the tremors, and that’s when came here, because I didn’t want to diagnose myself with Parkinson’s if there was some other explanation.

I think I’ll try and get an appointment about the bloating and pain. Hopefully it’s just wind but I’ve a family history of breast cancer.

And yes, I think I do try and tune into my body more than I did before I was ill.

Thanks all!

Came on the thread to say internal tremors can be a migraine symptom, OP.
But @WibbleyPie what you're describing could be a vestibular migraine attack. Can often be triggered by sleep changes.

Or it could be something different, I don't know. But I have VM and recognise what you're saying. If you want any resources to look into it please do DM me.

PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew · 12/06/2025 22:21

Thanks Swedish I hadn’t even thought of a migraine, I’ve had them, but not often and not for years. But I’d be chuffed if this thread can help @WibbleyPie out.

I got this before I went on HRT. I described it to the doctor as feeling like I'd swallowed a vibrating mobile phone. It was really unpleasant, but it totally disappeared with HRT.

Hollyhobbi · 12/06/2025 22:27

I get this. I have tachycardia and palpitations due to hyperparathyroidism and when my calcium and parathyroid goes high and my phosphate goes low they get really bad.

Hoolihan · 12/06/2025 22:34

I get the shaking/trembling sensation sometimes too, like my insides are trembling. It's hard to explain! Always when I'm falling asleep or half waking up in the night. It's not hugely unpleasant but very weird and a recent development - I'm 50.

I get this as part of my neurological involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia that is like Tourette's and Parkinson's disease combined.

Mine was caused by an off label antipsychotic prescribed for severe insomnia and anxiety after a head injury and post concussion syndrome a decade ago.

It is possible that other causes could be low hormones (oestrogen affects dopamine levels and if you are postmenopausal, this may be a cause). My internal vibrations as I call them have been worse since starting perimenopause, as I can only assume that my fluctuating hormones are making my dopamine levels all over the place too.

WibbleyPie · 12/06/2025 22:39

@SwedishSayna thank you, I'll look into it, it's a horrible sensation and I'd be interested in any way to make it stop!

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 12/06/2025 22:39

And for those who have said it is better with the start of HRT, this confirms my theory about dopamine and oestrogen etc being connected. 👍👍

Jerrypicker · 12/06/2025 22:41

Could it be Earth tremors? Sometimes I feel an ever so slight shake when I’m motionless in bed, and I am super fit so there’s absolutely know way it’s me who’s shaking. I’m in London btw..

Norugratsatall · 12/06/2025 22:46

I have Long Covid and get internal vibrations. They’re horrible, very unnerving!

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 12/06/2025 22:49

This is probably a hypnogogic jerk - happens to my DH sometimes and it is bloody annoying. It’s harmless but for him is a side effect of his anti depressants - happens when he is in light sleep. He has hurt himself doing it before when his leg won’t stop spasming and he has woken up with a sore ankle.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/06/2025 22:50

I have this. It feels like the bed shaking though I know it’s not. It’s very bizarre. I have MS so do t know if it’s related. But when I mentioned it to my neurologist he got my thyroid checked. It was normal.

TheSilentSister · 12/06/2025 22:56

Another reason, a motorbike slammed into my park car, No injuries to myself but for around a month, I felt body tremors, internal shaking. Was weird, it wasn't visible from the outside. I felt awful. Out of balance.

Dominicus · 12/06/2025 22:59

I’ve had this every now and then throughout my life. I havent done anything about it because it’s only once every now and then.
If it’s very regular, I’d get it checked out.

smallglassbottle · 12/06/2025 22:59

When my anxiety is really bad I feel as though I'm vibrating internally. That's all I can describe it as.

Pizza4Tea · 12/06/2025 23:12

I get random sensations like a phone is buzzing in my stomach or thighs. The amount of times I thought it was my phone but it’s not. Never occurred to me that it could be a menopause symptom. I get the bloated belly and can’t shift the belly fat. Who’d have thought. Middle age spread is actually real. ☹️

HorrorFan81 · 12/06/2025 23:16

Ive had this with ME/CFS. Never known what's actually caused it

Pericombobulations · 12/06/2025 23:18

I get this, always thought it was just me. But like a pp, it could be menopausal or could be my MS. oh heck, another thing to mention when I next speak to my consultant.

Conkerjar · 12/06/2025 23:29

I get this after too much caffeine, or if I'm anxious. I'm not saying you have either to blame, just that it's a thing, I've felt it too!

WinSomeandLoseSome · 12/06/2025 23:30

I get this too. I suffer from an essential tremor in my hands and wonder if it is related. I’ve only had it for the past year. Since having covid but also am
post menopausal which seems to be a common denominator with a lot of pps. Like others it happens when falling asleep or relaxing. Comforting to know it’s quite common though.
