Stand up from sitting on the floor without using hands/arms to push on anything else?

I've done it once ( not quite sure how ) but now can't do it again 😬

I'm 61 and trying to build a bit of strength

Ps I'm interested in how weak I am 😄

Yes, I can. I'm 67.

Gatekeeper · 12/06/2025 14:21

Nope, need to push myself up with lots of "Ooofs"

sharpenedroof · 12/06/2025 14:21

52, Oh my God I can't do it. Used to be able to! Not that long ago. Don't need to use hands or arms but did cross my legs and lean forward onto my lower legs to get up - which is cheating I believe.

I need to move more and build up strength!

sharpenedroof · 12/06/2025 14:22

My brother is 55 and finds this really easy and was genuinely surprised this was a test as he didn't seem able to grasp that anyone may not be able to do this.

Flossflower · 12/06/2025 14:23

Actually, apart from being flexible, it depends on your body type and leg measurement. In my Pilates class, only one member could do this.

Edited to say that I thought you meant straight up without letting your legs go to the side. I can do it if I let my legs go to the side.

sharpenedroof · 12/06/2025 14:24

If you are interested in fitness OP, grip strength is also well correlated to long life and health age and not getting dementia too I think.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 12/06/2025 14:26

I wasn't able to a year or so ago but have made a concerted effort to do it. I can do it no problem now and am 60.

springintoaction321 · 12/06/2025 14:28

@sharpenedroof re grip strength - i am doing a little weight training/ lifting with 3kg hand weights to build arm strength and grip.

My knees are not great due to rheumatoid arthritis but I'm taking crossing your legs and using momentum is not cheating 😂as being able to do it any other way seems impossible

I am 51
i can
but I can because I have been to the gym regularly for a while to make sure I can, it’s a difficult movement with weight transferred and core strength. Like all of our mobility - if you don’t use it - you lose it

springintoaction321 · 12/06/2025 14:31

Any top tips from those who can do it?

OP posts:
gerispringer · 12/06/2025 14:32

Yes you cross your legs put your bodyweight forward and lift. Helps if you have trainers on to give you some purchase on the floor. Try with holding some light weights in your outstretched arms to start with. I’m in my 70s and do Pilates and yoga

Inextremis · 12/06/2025 14:32

I'm 66, and I just did it (I had no idea whether I still could until I tried). So that would be a yes, then. I'm quite surprised!

springintoaction321 · 12/06/2025 14:34

@Inextremis hehe! Well done you

Without wanting to brag, I agree with him. It’s never occurred to me until I saw it online as some sort of test that it was a ‘thing’
Im 59

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 12/06/2025 14:37

63 here and yes. I just tried it for you.

Mindymomo · 12/06/2025 14:37

I am 64 cannot get up off the floor without hands, I tend to go on one knee and put my hands either side to push my bum up or I will crawl somewhere to put hands on something to pull me up, my legs are good and strong, but my hips aren’t as young as they used to be, but it’s mainly confidence that stops me trying, I would hate to fall over. DH is 67 he can get up without hands.

dancinginthekitchen · 12/06/2025 14:37

I can - and I’m 67 🙂

dogcatkitten · 12/06/2025 14:43

Any instructions or video of how to do it. I think it's my back that stops me, not been great for a while.

hattie43 · 12/06/2025 14:43

I did it by sitting crossed legged , put legs / knees to the side under bottom and push up through to standing .

Pollqueen · 12/06/2025 14:44

59 here and yes

Peridot1 · 12/06/2025 14:47

I really struggle to get up off the floor at all. Need to lean on something. DH calls me PoetryIn Motion.

I do know I need to do it and am going to the gym and seeing a personal trainer to build strength generally so I hope I’ll get there. Having dodgy knees doesn’t help.

JudyP · 12/06/2025 14:59

is it acceptable to rock legs to one side and get up that way? I can do that but not from crossed legs straight up! I need to practice from crossed legs!

dogcatkitten · 12/06/2025 15:03

I also feel like I'm sitting right on the bones, which feels bad before I even try to stand up, need thicker carpets?

Saysayonara · 12/06/2025 15:57

I can, I'm 67. I knew I could last year but haven't tried recently so had a go and I still can!

@springintoaction321 I watched a quick video once which gave a good technique. I can't find it now, but what I do is similar to this.
