Stand up from sitting on the floor without using hands/arms to push on anything else?

I've done it once ( not quite sure how ) but now can't do it again 😬

I'm 61 and trying to build a bit of strength

Back in a sec……

maddiemookins16mum · 12/06/2025 16:00

Amazingly yes I can.

TheOliveFinch · 12/06/2025 16:00

Just looked at this video on YouTube which involves both getting down and back up again and you get a score out of ten, I got 9/10 can get down easily but needed a bit of help from one hand to get up again , I’m 62

My knees would dislocate if I did that. I have crap knees due to no cartilage, and can't t cross my legs or kneel, so no. But I can do other funky things due to hypermobility.

MSisSWupsidedown · 12/06/2025 16:17

I know this isn't aimed at me, as only 50, but no, I need one hand. To be fair, though, I could before the last MS relapse, and I did canoe 8km down a French river last week, so feeling pretty pleased with myself for that one! I mean, the river does a lot of the work, but still...😎

Pixiedust1234 · 12/06/2025 16:20

No i can't. I can't cross my legs, nor kneel, due to very painful knees.

I didn't used to be able to get off a chair/sofa without hands (and grunts) either but ive been practicing and now I can.

MelOfTheRoses · 12/06/2025 16:24

I can do it very easily if I move my legs round to the side and go up onto one knee. No problem.

But I can't do it at all straight up from a cross-legged position. I seem to have too much tummy.

Hatty65 · 12/06/2025 16:37

Yes I can. I thought I might have cheated because I did it on my knees - then I watched the video and realised I did it the same as the woman did.

I'm not convinced it's a 'sign of longevity' if you take that to mean living a long time. My Dad is almost 90 and was never very supple! He was a big, heavy guy who wouldn't have been able to get up off the floor over 60 without using his arms - but he's kept on walking and doing stuff.

hattie43 · 12/06/2025 14:43

I did it by sitting crossed legged , put legs / knees to the side under bottom and push up through to standing .

Should add I’m 60

ErrolTheDragon · 12/06/2025 17:01

I’m 64 - no hands, but I have to go via knees or somehow get myself into a squat first, not the straight up from cross legged magic trick.

Chewbecca · 12/06/2025 17:04

Another option is needed - can only get up by pushing on an appropriate height chair or table (or DH!)

OneNewLeader · 12/06/2025 17:04

My mum can at 78. She does a lot of age appropriate exercise classes. Would recommend.

gerispringer · 12/06/2025 14:32

Yes you cross your legs put your bodyweight forward and lift. Helps if you have trainers on to give you some purchase on the floor. Try with holding some light weights in your outstretched arms to start with. I’m in my 70s and do Pilates and yoga

Brilliant! Thankyou, I just tried and I did it! I’m 65. I’ll do it daily, with weights, 👍🏻🌹

FinallyHere · 12/06/2025 17:06

Yoga with a teacher who really understands how the human body works rather than can bend their own body into all sorts of poses without being able to break it down into steps.

at 65 I’m now stronger and more flexible than I’ve been since well before adolescence made me too self conscious to do much movement.

the cues that helped me included pelvis back , really push into my herls. Of course it depends completely on what is limiting you now as to what needs to change.

someone who can observe you, spot what needs to be different and break that difference down into manageable steps is what it took for me. Hope you find what you need

OofyProsser2 · 12/06/2025 17:06

I think this is partly body shape and centre of gravity as well as fitness. I can do it easily, my other half is much fitter and stronger than me but can’t get anywhere near it.

JohnTheRevelator · 12/06/2025 17:07

No way. But then I have got osteoarthritis in my hips.

Pinty · 12/06/2025 17:09

I can if I roll onto my knees first then up from there

Seawolves · 12/06/2025 17:10

Yes. I have always been able to and I think that helps.

springintoaction321 · 12/06/2025 14:31

Any top tips from those who can do it?

Start by getting up from the lowest step on your staircase that you can manage, then work down until you can stand up from the bottom step without using hands. I do it every time I put on or take off my shoes. Sit down without using hands, put on or take off shoes, stand up. Basically low squats, every time, every day. I’m 62.

Anzena · 12/06/2025 17:11

I don't see the point of this especially if it's somewhat difficult. At 67 I can get up from the floor using hands, and that's good enough for me at the moment. I understand it challenges people and probably makes them more supple and flexible, but let's face it, the only time I'm going to be on the floor is if I fall, then it's either possible or impossible to get up!

I could do it I suppose if I practised since I'm mobile with zero aches, pains, arthritis etc. (knock on wood), but I don't want to injure myself either!

Well done all of you who can do it. I'm in awe of your flexibility and willingness to challenge yourselves. Hats off.

AmyDudley · 12/06/2025 17:12

God no, I'm 65 and if I didn't use my arms I'd be rolling round the room like a seal indefinitely.

Persephoknee · 12/06/2025 17:13

Oh I just tried the sitting down one in the video. That was a bit of a thud! How does one improve for this one?!

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 12/06/2025 17:13

Unless you are very fit, strong and agile and slim, going from sitting cross-legged to standing up is bad for your knee and ankle joints, and puts a strain on the ligaments. Swivel round and go up onto one knee, and get up from there.

Anzena · 12/06/2025 17:14

AmyDudley · 12/06/2025 17:12

😂😊😂You are a woman after my own heart as my granny used to say, and I would be similar except I might resemble a whale more than a seal.

Avocadocat · 12/06/2025 17:14

I’m only 44 and can’t do it (can do it if I use my knees). I’m flexible and strong (can squat 80kg and deadlift 60kg) and run 50 miles a week. But my legs/ hips are just the wrong length / angle?!
