Stand up from sitting on the floor without using hands/arms to push on anything else?

I've done it once ( not quite sure how ) but now can't do it again 😬

I'm 61 and trying to build a bit of strength

Actually, apart from being flexible, it depends on your body type and leg measurement. In my Pilates class, only one member could do this.

Edited to say that I thought you meant straight up without letting your legs go to the side. I can do it if I let my legs go to the side.

Edited

How interesting are long legs better ?

RosesAndHellebores · 12/06/2025 20:19

Nearly 65 and need a hand to get onto my knees but up from there with no hands.

I can put my socks on standing on one leg though.

I need to get fitter.

Manzana · 12/06/2025 20:19

that should read without using hands or arms,

I agree. I'm not over 60, but I'm not far off 60. I just sort of shift my legs sideways so my feet soles are facing the same way then up onto my knees and up to standing. I'm wiry though. If I suddenly put weight on it could be a bit more difficult 😂

My first thought was, what are the rules for this?

Do you have to start off cross-legged sitting on the ground or something else?

I don't think that I've ever tried in my entire life to levitate from a sitting position to a standing position.

When I first tried this out I could not in any way accomplish this task without using one hand.

But now, using @JasmineAllen 's excellent technique I can manage it.

Thank you Jasmine, your technique works really well. I was imagining that i had to do some sort of vertical levitation from a cross-legged position.

For context, I was 60 two months ago and I am slightly overweight.

I can, I'm 67. I knew I could last year but haven't tried recently so had a go and I still can!

@springintoaction321 I watched a quick video once which gave a good technique. I can't find it now, but what I do is similar to this.

I’m pretty sure that isn’t right. You are meant to be able to do it without putting any additional point of contact on the floor, such as your knees or legs. It’s too easy if you can just put your knees and lower legs on the floor. That’s really easy to get up then. It’s not much of a measure of strength, core or flexibility if you can do that.

I used to be able to just cross my legs and lift straight up from there.

I`m 61 . i have to use my hands to force myself up and anything else that is nearby😁

I just had a go and experimented a bit with different techniques - total fail till I also came up with this one. My jeans didn't help, something more flexible would have been good. I'm not at all wiry and had to rock a bit to get some momentum.

From cross-legged? No way!

Just did it! Sit cross legged and put your weight forward and push through your feet and up! But wobbly at the top but I did it!

BreakingBroken · 12/06/2025 20:32

67 and yes with putting my bent legs to the side, rolling onto my knees then up.

That’s not what my brother does. He sits cross legged and goes straight up. He finds that super easy and can’t understand why anyone can’t do it.

AudiobookListener · 12/06/2025 20:34

I found it easy. I think it must depend on how you do it. I put my legs to one side, got on my knees and then bring one leg to front, foot on floor and then...up. I wouldn't want to do it twice in a row though.

merrymelody · 12/06/2025 20:43

springintoaction321 · 12/06/2025 14:31

Any top tips from those who can do it?

Being fairly fit (yoga) and keeping my weight down. I’m 62.

Walkthisroad · 12/06/2025 20:53

I think I can do it. I put my feet forward flat on the floor and then stand up after a bit of rocking 😆 I can definitely do it like the woman in the video. I am 62.

sharpenedroof · 12/06/2025 20:58

I’ve looked it up and you are meant to be able to start standing to cross leg and then from cross leg to standing without using hand, forearms, legs or knees or elbows. Deduct one point ( from ten) each time you do this Deduct one point.5 of a point if you wobble. You deduct points for each of these both when going to sitting and returning to standing. Score of 8 to 10 equals a good level of fitness.

Laska2Meryls · 12/06/2025 21:06

I still remember being totally humiliated because I couldn't do a stand from sitting cross legged at Brownies aged about 9 and never have been able to ..I think it's one of those things you can either do or not ..
I can though at 67, still cycle and hill walk for miles ..

lljkk · 12/06/2025 21:08

It's great that there are so many ppl on here saying they couldn't use to but the have learned how now.

I am curious about people who can't get into this position without using hands then get up without using hands. Is it impossible because of bad knees or bad hips or what...

If you're over 60 can you
Sunnyside4 · 12/06/2025 21:11

I'm 59. Half assumed I'd be crossed legged to start with. I just tried and short of twisted amount to kneeling upright and standing from there. It didn't look very glamorous though. Not sure I'd have looked any better at half my age.

Laska2Meryls · 12/06/2025 21:11

Or just body type? As I say I couldn't even as a child and never have been.. I am obviously not built that way , but have been active all my life .

suki1964 · 12/06/2025 21:14

Day I turned 60, my knees went on strike

Im pretty fit and very active, just the knees wont play ball, I used to just need help getting down, now its both ways

Talkinpeace · 12/06/2025 21:19

Party trick

At an outdoor event sit down or stand up while holding a full pint in each hand

useful skill

Yes I do it like the lady in this video, I'm 57, we practice this in pilates class.

That's a very different position in that image (kneeling on one knee) compared to what was suggested of going straight down into a cross-legged position. ie cross your legs and then just sit straight down on the floor in a controlled manner without any sort of falling on your bum at any point.

As to getting up, the suggestion was that you start from a cross-legged position and then just raise up vertically without getting into any other intermediate position. So that would exclude the kneeling on one knee in your image.

As many others have said, moving your legs to one side, getting up onto either one or both knees and then getting up from there is generally very doable indeed.

It's just the whole going down and up in one controlled movement that is very difficult.

lljkk · 12/06/2025 21:56

What OP said was
"Stand up from sitting on the floor without using hands/arms to push on anything else?"

the pic I showed counts to say yes to OP's question.

I can think of at least ... 8 ? different ways to get up without hands tbh, the pic I showed is the easiest one I imagine.
