Bored in St Ives

Here until Saturday - came to stay with a family member who has found herself busy with other things. I've wandered round the shops a few times, been for fish and chips, had a crab sandwich on the harbour. I'm not into art galleries or museums. The weather isn't really good enough for whole beach days and I'd be on my own which is a bit sad/boring. How can I fill the time until I go home? I don't have a car here

Get the bus to Zennor and walk the coastal path back?

frozendaisy · 11/06/2025 14:25

Take a book/newspaper/puzzle book to a good pub and watch the world go by.

Why can’t you try a museum or gallery? It would pass a few hours.

Buy a book or magazine and find a nice cafe.

Is there a cinema?

Get the train to Penzance.

Sea glass hunting on the harbour side. Lots of lovely glass to find. Get the train to Penzance. Get the coastal bus to Lands End. Surfing or paddle boarding lesson. Boat trip.

Christ. I'm so in need of holiday. I'd pretty much kill someone for a few days on my own in a pretty seaside town.

Where are you staying? Is there a cosy spot, perhaps with a sea or bustling town view, where you can sit and read?
I agree with getting the bus out to somewhere and walking the South West Coast Path; it's very beautiful.
You say you're not into art, but Barbara Hepworth's sculpture garden is a lovely place to visit it own right. And, it's a while since I went to St Ives, but I think the Tate has a nice café. I'd sit in there with a coffee and do some more reading. Grin
Other than that, I'd have more crab sandwiches! And some cream teas. And read more.… I love time on my own, personally, and don't give a shit if people think I'm sad.

Get a train to Penzance? There's a bit more going on there. St Michael's Mount is an experience. Check the tides.

You could go to the Tate St Ives though when I was there I didn't find it particularly welcoming and the exhibits were s bit crap. (Ten years ago).

The Hepworth museum is nice, for an hour.

Do you have a car? Go to Lands End (very touristy)?

Go for a walk? Find a map of local routes and relive your Demelza-Poldark-looking-wistful moments.

Train to St Erth's. Hop off at Carbis bay (huge!) and look at the sand and the fancy conference hotel. https://greatscenicrailways.co.uk/lines/st-ives-bay-line/

Do people do this? I have always wanted to but felt weird lol

Doggielovecharlotte · 11/06/2025 15:02

Get on the open top bus to Penzance!

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/06/2025 15:04

Go to lands end. Its a lovely day today down here so I'd make the most of the sunshine as thurs and Fri are meant to be a bit crap

deedeemegadoodoo · 11/06/2025 15:05

Go to The Tate (I know you’re not into art but it will pass some time). Across the road is Porthmeor Beach. Go to the cafe, but there’s a bit underneath which is good for snacks and people wasting. Take. A book or magazine with you. Have you explored the streets in Downalong? There’s lots of quirky gift shops tucked away. Maybe get the bus or train to other places?

Yes, I do. I wouldn't sit there for ages if the place is busy though, it's not fair on the business to have one person taking up a table for hours.

helpfulperson · 11/06/2025 15:09

There used to be a travel agent running day trips but that was a few years ago.

Crushed23 · 11/06/2025 15:10

I love St Ives. Went there on a solo trip in 2021 when there were restrictions on international travel (don’t usually staycation) and it exceeded all expectations.

If you’re bored, do a trip to the Scilly Isles? I took the boat from Penzance but I believe you can fly there too.

SheilaFentiman · 11/06/2025 15:11

A workshop/course?

Many pubs have small tables, or you can sit at the bar. It's perfectly normal to sit in the pub on your own and read. I don't know why anybody would have a problem doing it.

Eggplanting · 11/06/2025 15:15

Walk to Zennor, see the Zennor Mermaid, have a drink in the Tinners’ Arms, and bus back. Or bus to Zennor and do it backwards. Take a boat trip out to Godrevy lighthouse and see the seals. Go swimming. Learn to surf? And the Hepworth studio garden is lovely whether or not you’re interested in sculpture. Train or the bus to Penzance. It’s a while since I e been in Cornwall but it used to be that you could, with planning, get to Heston, Falmouth etc by public transport from St Ives.
