Bored in St Ives

Here until Saturday - came to stay with a family member who has found herself busy with other things. I've wandered round the shops a few times, been for fish and chips, had a crab sandwich on the harbour. I'm not into art galleries or museums. The weather isn't really good enough for whole beach days and I'd be on my own which is a bit sad/boring. How can I fill the time until I go home? I don't have a car here

How can you be bored in such a lovely place? There are dozens of walks around there. Swim in the sea. Sit & read your book on the beach. It’s beautiful weather today.

YY - it's one thing to plan an 'alone' trip and another to be landed with one - especially without a car.

You don’t need a car!

KernowMaiden · 11/06/2025 16:39

If you like coffee then head to Mount Zion Coffee - but be warned, it’s only for serious coffee fans. If you’re a Starbucks/Costa gal it might not be for you - but they do do incredible hot chocolate which I would recommend as an alternative.

Life can go on even if you don't have a car; there are trains and buses from St Ives.

I am well aware and posted a suggested train trip earlier.

Thanks for the sanctimony though, hun.

You don’t need a car!

My point was... if you plan to go on holiday alone, then you think about transport as part of it - driving, or going somewhere with a good public transport network.

It is OK for OP to be disappointed.

I was responding to your post about the OP not having a car, which sounded like you think she's been put in a bad position not having one.

SheilaFentiman · 11/06/2025 16:47

Dear goddess.

Have a nice night, all.

She doesn't sound like she's disappointed about not being able to get to certain places.
And St Ives does have pretty good public transport connections.

I love all these suggestions and would do most of them. Also st Ives Bay Hotel at the top of the hill has a nice spa so I would probably book a massage after my long coast path walk.

Do people do this? I have always wanted to but felt weird lol

Absolutely!
I have never felt awkward about sitting somewhere on my own having a drink, reading a book, people watching etc.🙂

kingprawnspaghetti · 11/06/2025 16:54

I’m amazed with some people- St. Ives is one of the most wonderful places to visit in the UK and the OP is BORED. Maybe a cruise would suit you better, then it’s all delivered to you on a daily basis with little effort required

MoominUnderWater · 11/06/2025 16:59

I'd be happy doing coast path walks.
Boat trip to the light house?
Surf lesson?
See where you can get to via train or bus and have a day trip somewhere?

This is reminding me of a time I was in a shop in Dorchester on Thames and two baffled Americans came in wondering ‘where all the Thomas Hardy stuff’ was.

Aaah, I live near there. Great abbey.

I used to volunteer at the nearby National Trust property of Nuffield Place. A woman home-edding her daughter visited with her, as 'Arabella is a huge William Morris fan'. They were later seen leaving, with the mother saying 'I thought the wallpaper would be better...'.

So many gorgeous places to go on the bus. You are surrounded by beauty. Explore!
Even if you aren’t into art I think that the Tate and Barbara Hepworth museum are worth a look.

MargotTenenbaumscoat · 11/06/2025 17:20

Btw, what do you enjoy? What’s interesting to you?
No point me suggesting local places if they will be of no interest.

Lindos1 · 11/06/2025 17:38

The ice cream at Moomaids is excellent...

inasillyfrillydress · 11/06/2025 17:42

Another vote for Zennor and the Barbara Hepworth sculpture museum /garden.

There's also the Leach pottery which has some lovely things.

It’s a lovely part of the world. I did a lot of walking around there in the 90s.

I remember (I think! This was pre-mobiles, in my student days) a wonderfully gnomic memorial tablet in the Abbey to the memory of a woman who had died in the 1790s, ‘a martyr to excessive sensibility’. I wondered at the time if that was a polite, Georgian way of saying ‘out of her tree’.

JemimaPiddlepot · 11/06/2025 17:58

Go to the cafe, but there’s a bit underneath which is good for snacks and people wasting.

Bloody hell, becoming a sniper is a bit of a drastic cure for boredom!

Fair enough. I'd actually love to learn Cornish. I speak a bit of Welsh which I assume would help?

ThatsNotMyTeen · 11/06/2025 18:00

Boat trip
Go to Penzance. Dip in the Jubilee Pool?
Marazion/St Michaels mount
Sennen Cove
We stayed in a nice place called Perranuthnoe which had lovely cafes

you might need a taxi to some of these places without a car though

Buy yourself a pasty on the go and see if you can outsmart the seagulls.

That’s dangerous talk! I still have a scar on my finger from beating one off my toddler, who had rashly tried to eat a cheese sandwich outside his little beach tent. That toddler is now a teenager, which will show you it’s a proper scar!
