Here until Saturday - came to stay with a family member who has found herself busy with other things. I've wandered round the shops a few times, been for fish and chips, had a crab sandwich on the harbour. I'm not into art galleries or museums. The weather isn't really good enough for whole beach days and I'd be on my own which is a bit sad/boring. How can I fill the time until I go home? I don't have a car here

I mean, I'm loathe to suggest anything else until I know what you're into, but maybe go and find St Ives Community Orchard- it has regular things going on.

I could recommend a kazillion walks for you, but are you then going to turn round and say you're not really into walking? 🤔

My sister and I once had a great trip to Penzance without a car. Bussed very successfully around st ives, lands end, went to minnack theatre at porthcurno, boat trip to see seals? Penzance is a lovely town. National trust gardens and houses? Eg st Michael’s mount tidal walk from marazion to an old house with beautiful gardens and the giant mythology. trengwainton, godolphin, trewrice, yes Falmouth is beautiful and there’s a life boat museum there. Do you like birds? Paradise park is amazing!! Truro is nice too mousehole also lovely for pretty shops. Lamorna is a beautiful beach with a lovely seafood cafe. We used to walk from Penzance. Lost gardens of heligan if you can find a tour? Honestly we’d have too much to fit in in 2 weeks even without a car!!

That’s dangerous talk! I still have a scar on my finger from beating one off my toddler, who had rashly tried to eat a cheese sandwich outside his little beach tent. That toddler is now a teenager, which will show you it’s a proper scar!

They are outrageous. They also work in packs!

Tragically, unforgiveably, it has just been axed 😥 The number 7 has replaced it at short notice, but it only goes every 2 hours and apparently is a bit all over the place at the moment.

Ooh.

What about the bus to the marvellous Chyauster Ancient Village? Internet reckons "A direct bus service operates between St Ives (Cinema stop) and Chysauster Ancient Village ". Hugely atmospheric and thought-provoking prehistoric place to visit.

Don't know, but reminds me of the song lyric:

Paint some daft, childish picture of the harbour, find some gullible outsider decked out in bling, and try to flog it as a ‘newly discovered’ piece of naïve art — just like Cornish artist Alfred Wallis did. Classic seaside scam, really! Oh and with the money raised have a proper holiday one you need your passport for !!

I have two of his prints on my kitchen wall 😀 love 'em!

Seagulls: there was one last year that camped outside one of the gift shops and wouldn't move and tried to attack everyone that went it. The poor staff were a little stressed suffice to say 😂 they're awful! (The seagulls not the staff).

MoominUnderWater · 12/06/2025 17:24

I love Alfred Wallis stuff do. I keep meaning to paint my village in his style

My dad god rest his soul would only go as far as Lowry - if he had seen Alfred Wallis he would have said they need their heads testing. And when he saw the prices he would have exclaimed loudly "HOW MUCH" (he was from the North). That said the OP should definately have a go !!

£15,000–£25,000 for small to mid‑size pieces (e.g., boats, luggers)

£20,000–£30,000, and sometimes £40,000–£60,000, for more significant works with shipping scenes or lighthouses

Try to sneak into the Eden Project by pretending to be a a parrot.

Every time I’ve been to st Ives I’ve left feeling angry at too many crowds and always swore to go back when it’s less busy!
But there are so many actual beautiful spots in the surrounding areas, all mentioned in this thread. I’d kill to have a few days to myself strolling coast paths and diving into pubs for food and avoiding the inevitable showers.
Hope you find something to entice you op.

Rapunzle · 12/06/2025 21:11

Get a coach trip to the Minack Theatre too.

TonTonMacoute · 12/06/2025 22:34

What did you expect? Krakatoa erupting? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the beach?
