I was NOT a brave girl at the hospital.

Had to have an injection into my eye.

Doesn't hurt but it's very pushy and I feel very got at.
I know heaps of MNers have had a lot worse but I'm a wimp.

Anyone else had this?

OP posts:
GrannyGoggles · 10/06/2025 21:17

Lots of people have had worse.

My husband has had injections into his eyes for years

ChocolateCinderToffee · 10/06/2025 21:18

Think I would need sedation. I can't bear the test when they puff air at you.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 10/06/2025 21:19

When they numbed both my eyes for the iridotomy procedure, I thought it was pretty awful, but it at least made the huge lens they inserted a lot easier to deal with.

Goodness knows though what a needle must feel like. Definitely treat yourself, I agree with others 💯

Good grief! I'm not surprised! That sounds awful.
I fainted whilst discussing a medical procedure once. I wasn't even getting it done, it was literally just words!!
Take it easy OP. I think you're a hero.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 10/06/2025 21:24

That is my worst nightmare OP!!!! That would make me feel all wobbly and shaky and needing a big hug. So here is one for you.

LadyRoughDiamond · 10/06/2025 21:25

Yes, but you still did it, despite being scared. That IS brave.
If it’s any consolation OP, I had gas and air to have a few stitches out today 💪😂

GrannyGoggles · 10/06/2025 21:25

You’ve had a horrible experience.

Take care of yourself. You got through it.

You were brave!

StJills360 · 10/06/2025 21:26

Blimey OP - hats off to you! Can I ask those in the medical profession why we have to 'endure' these things? If a patient says "I'd rather not thanks" then surely it's in everyone's interest to make things easier and present some alternatives - or is this meant to be a test of how brave we are or how determined we are? In desperation have resorted to stockpiling painkillers/prescription sedatives from other countries (those that I tested checked out okay before anyone points that out) that may help me if/when I get into a similar situation!

Me too. I’m actually feeling quite peculiar just thinking about it.

Does anyone know, can you be sedated/have a general for this? I’d want all the drugs. Every one of them

TimeForATerf · 10/06/2025 21:27

Never had it done but I take my mum to the macular clinic where she has regular injections in her eye. The clinic is full of little old ladies and some men who have these hideous injections, without complaint, every month or two. Mums been having them on and off for 12 years.

I'm trying to prepare myself should it be something that comes my way in years to come.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 10/06/2025 21:27

I am stupidly squeamish about eyes. I think I would honestly have open heart surgery than someone sticking a needle in my eye....

Marylou62 · 10/06/2025 21:27

Oh no! You were so brave..
I had an eye bleed and was told I needed laser treatment... and was told It was going to happen there and then.. I sort of freaked, had a minor panic attack and so nearly walked out..
I'm actually quite resilient and had lots of procedures but this sent me into a frenzy..
I eventually calmed down and it was actually not as bad as I had anticipated...
I'm not sure if I could have gone through with an INJECTION!? IN MY EYE!
But I'm sure I'd have gone ahead because losing the small bit of vision I have already makes me fear blindness..
Hope you are okay?

Soubriquet · 10/06/2025 21:29

NuffSaidSam · 10/06/2025 19:42

I'd rather have a painful injection in the arm than a painless one in my eye tbh!

Treat yourself this evening.

Ditto!!! That kinda freaks me out

MrsTigerface · 10/06/2025 21:31

As others have said, you sound like you were actually VERY brave indeed. Go, you! Hope you are treating yourself / relaxing in some way this evening xxx

Rocknrollstar · 10/06/2025 21:31

I have had injections in my eye. A friend needed a coursed of them and was too scared to go but I was able to talk him into haven’t them to save his sight. He had to get something to calm him down from the GP.

katepilar · 10/06/2025 21:32

Chickenstewie · 10/06/2025 19:56

It’s hideous. I have to also sit in a pitch black room for 45 minutes while looking at a screen the whole time, unable to blink properly due to shit stuck to my eyeballs, pressing a button everytime I see a red dot appear.

Its like a form of torture.

What the heck is that for?

Hotflushesandchilblains · 10/06/2025 21:39

I once had to have a growth removed from my eyelid and had a panic attack. I have had surgeries I sailed through, have been told I am very stoic and calm and usually have a high pain threshold. But something about my eyes freaks me out. I have always been so grateful I never needed contact lenses as I really dont think I could cope with putting something in my eye. I know it is irrational, but I just find it really hard.

justasking111 · 10/06/2025 21:40

I've had lasers in both eyes twice. Two surgeries on the left eye sedated. Three operations on the right eye, two sedated, one an emergency so no sedation that was grim.

Went for routine check up a month later the buggers sent me down the corridor for injections in both eyes. It's painful post surgery.

Tortielady · 10/06/2025 21:40

I'm very squeamish about my eyes. My father had glaucoma, which means I've had to spend a lot of time with ophthalmologists. Most of them were lovely, but there was one who was terrifying. I was delighted when he was transferred to whichever department it was that uses the services of a lammergeier, because I'm sure smashing bones on rocks was more his forte than dealing with nervous patients. I absolutely sympathise and hope the treatment is successful. Have a lolly🍭

lifeonmars100 · 10/06/2025 21:41

I think you are amazing, the mere thought makes me want to pass out. I hate hospitals, one of my huge fears is being very ill and having to have things done to me. I want to run away and cry (but manage to stay calm) just having a blood test done, that is how much of a whimp I am. Loathe going to the doctor and despite quite a few hospital admissions and various surgeries I remain totally phobic about them, I think you are a hero and deserve chocolate in vast quantities

ButteredRadish · 10/06/2025 20:48

@nocoolnamesleftFuch’s Dystrophy by any chance?

@TimeforatinctureMy mum had to have corneal transplants sewn onto her eye whilst awake. Oh that’s after they’ve peeled her existing cornea off…. 🫣

Nope, ARMD but she developed it scarily young.

C152 · 10/06/2025 21:52

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2025 19:52

They put local anaesthetic drops in so you don't feel a thing.

I guess it depends where you have it done. They certainly weren't generous with the anaethetic for my poor mother, or anyone else having it done the few times she went to Moorfields in Tooting. It was agonisingly painful, no pain meds were given before or after and the staff didn't give a shit that all these poor older people were screaming, crying and shaking in pain. The ones who'd had it done before said they drugged and drank themselves up to the eyeballs (no pun intended) in advance, with whatever they could get their hands on, just so they could get through the procedure. One kindly offered mum a swig of the whisky he had on him for that specific purpose. She chose losing more of her sight over the torture.

Anyway, OP, you did amazingly well to get through it.

RobertaFirmino · 10/06/2025 21:54

I can't even tolerate the puff of air in the eye at Vision Express, let alone a bloody needle in there! OP, you are a top tier hard nut and I salute you!

SparklyBrickViper · 10/06/2025 21:56

You did amazing!

Midnightlove · 10/06/2025 21:56

I remember my nana used to have injections in her eye.. I realised I could never do it. Anything else I'd tolerate but not the eye 😳
