I was NOT a brave girl at the hospital.

Had to have an injection into my eye.

Doesn't hurt but it's very pushy and I feel very got at.
I know heaps of MNers have had a lot worse but I'm a wimp.

Anyone else had this?

My mum has had many many many of these. I desperately hope I don't inherit what she has, because eye injection give me the creeps.

Me too.

Beautifulsunflowers · 10/06/2025 19:57

Op, I’ve had to have eye injections too. Isn’t it horrible and like you say not painful but uncomfortable. After the first one I remember feeling very sorry for myself and having a really lazy relaxing day drinking tea and watching Netflix!
Do you have a follow up planned? Do you know if you need any more injections?
Was it macular degeneration or something else?
well done today.

It’s hideous. I have to also sit in a pitch black room for 45 minutes while looking at a screen the whole time, unable to blink properly due to shit stuck to my eyeballs, pressing a button everytime I see a red dot appear.

Its like a form of torture.

I had that last year. And after that they had to put in some painful eye drops. I don't usually have issues with eye drops but these were really painful!

The lady who did all this to me did describe it as torture

I have injections in the back of my head every 12 weeks which is bad enough. But at least I can't see the needle go in

Injection into your EYE?! I’d be crying! I won’t even use eyelash curlers! I was wussing when I just had to lie there and be scanned. To be fair, the tunnel freaked me out. And I hate a smear, there was a thread on here once where everyone was imsisting a smear was easy breezy and telling the OP to woman up. Not all smears are easy my last one really hurt and she made me bleed.

Congratulations! You can now confidently use the phrase "I'd rather stick pins in my eyes" next time you're presented with an undesirable offer.

It sounds hideous BTW! How do you do it without instinctively just closing your eye?

They clamp it open!

Yes, the eye drops after! I am fine with the usual dilating ones, but those felt like they were setting fire to my eyes. I’ve never known staff be more apologetic about what they are doing to me than at the eye clinic!

Sorry you have through it too, its so disorienting and horrible.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/06/2025 20:03

Horrendous! They’d have to knock me out with something strong

OMG! Like in A Clockwork Orange! 😭

Respect due. Medal for bravery. 🏅👏

They put local anaesthetic drops in so you don't feel a thing.

I would need a bucket load in not a few drops.
Congratulations op on going through with it
I suppose the natural reaction is to veer away from anything coming close contact with our eyes specially pointy needles.

milkandblackspiders · 10/06/2025 20:04

My mum has to have this, I'm not sure I'd be brave enough! I cried in the car park after having my wisdom tooth pulled out, God knows how I'd cope with anything worse.

cherrycherrypickin · 10/06/2025 20:06

You're very brave OP. DS (14) had a detached retina last year and has had all kinds of tests and ops and follow up tests. You are both much braver than me.

I go frequently for scans. They've been threatening this injection for some while but this was my first. Not macula degenerative but a genetic condition that fucks up the retina.

My mum has to have these, I am praying it isnt passed down to me

IOnlyWantSexMoneyPowerAndRevenge · 10/06/2025 20:10

Ugh shudder. Anything eye related and nope. Even your description of pressure made me feel a bit sick.
I would have been feeling VERY brave to have it so Im sure you were too.
I think you deserve a sticker.
Hope you get the outcome you want.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/06/2025 20:10

I was s nurse for a long time but I seriously don't do eyes they give me the collywobbles. I think you are very brave.

Sidebeforeself · 10/06/2025 20:11

You need a lollipop at least.

ruethewhirl · 10/06/2025 20:12

OMG I went cold just reading that, OP. Well done for getting through it! If I ever have to have these, I can pretty much guarantee I won't be a 'brave girl'. 😱

(And, like a pp, I always get Clockwork Orange images in my head when I think of eye procedures... cringe)

JazzyBBBG · 10/06/2025 20:13

That's horrific, my mum has had that. Also freaked out at hospital today during an MRI when they snapped a helmet over my head unexpectedly. Must be the day for it.

Floranan · 10/06/2025 20:14

Into the eye, noway . They would have to sedate me !

well done I don’t think a sticker cuts it I think you need a rosette AND a certificate

momtoboys · 10/06/2025 20:15

I had one of those once. I was sick in the trash can next into the chair I was in. It was a horrific experiencec.

Bigoldtable · 10/06/2025 20:16

You are massively brave!! I don’t think I could. A friend has to have it done regularly and Christ, I don’t know how she does it!

This! Or possibly biting your jailors and running away? Or having previously negotiated for conscious sedation like I have with my (private) dentist.

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/06/2025 20:20

Blimey you’re a brave girl. I would have run a mile.

OneWildandWonderfulLife · 10/06/2025 20:22

I wouldn’t normally hijack a thread, but for those hoping that macular degeneration isn’t inherited, I asked my mother’s consultant what I could do to avoid it happening and he said to take Macushield vitamins. They are highly recommended apparently. Then just in passing I mentioned this to a client, and she confirmed that she sees a consultant at a London eye hospital who recommended the same.

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 10/06/2025 20:23

Oh God boke 🤢 you can stick me with a needle pretty much anywhere but not my eye!! You definitely ain't a wimp @Timeforatincture cos no way in hell could I have done that with a general anaesthetic!!
