The smoking ones are usually bad.

scotch video tape with the skeleton. I was a toddler and got hysterical when it came on the TV.

for those who are interested in the 70s “warning” adverts (don’t boil a kettle on a boat) you should look at scarfolk annual

Floogal · 10/06/2025 22:04

Definitely a few scary public information films and warning adverts. As well as normal adverts that were just creepy or over dramatic.

When I was very little, the man from Del Monte adverts scared me for some reason. Especially when all the oranges get chucked up in the air.

Most of the NSPCC and Barnardo's adverts were horrific! Needlessly gratuitous

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 10/06/2025 22:14

Already been said but Julie knew her killer & Judderman...the puppet moves urghhh

And the one where the man keeps seeing the child he killed while driving. In the playground..under the desk

@ImDuranDuran my dad was in the British armed forces and for a while we were stationed in Germany. At that time the IRA had cells in Germany to target British servicemen (not forgetting the Red Army Faction had a terror campaign at the same time).
The TV channel and radio station regularly had warnings about looking under cars for bombs, not wearing uniform in town and advice to have German registered cars.

The Nspcc one that shows a child sitting on the stairs listening to DV unfold downstairs brought back how I grew up.
Theirs on in Scotland for a child's hospice showing a mum playing with her child and the child fades and the mum is alone in tears surrounded by her child's toys.

WigglywagglyWanda · 10/06/2025 22:21

We've got some speed kills ones in northern ireland, not sure of you have them on the mainland?

The worst is a class of primary school children sitting on the grass and the car flies over the wall at them.

Another is girlfriend sitting on the wall, boyfriend facing her cuddling. Car runs into him leaving her with him squashed between her and the car.

Another 4 young guys one flies through the screen and onto the road. There's others.

I find them hard hitting, but I suppose they are supposed to be

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 10/06/2025 22:21

There's not theirs

WhiskyandWater · 10/06/2025 22:27

The Judderman for Metz used the scare the shit out of me, still can’t watch it on YouTube. That music at the end of it!

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/06/2025 22:29

Birds Eye had an advert for a while with a toy polar bear sitting in or on a freezer. It had a voice like a mafia boss.

There was an NSPCC advert some years back, that depicted a cartoon boy being subjected to clownish violence by a cartoon man, complete with exaggerated sound effects etc. At the end of the ad, the cartoon boy who was lying unconscious on the floor, changed into an image of a real child.

I've never had a reaction to any other advert, that was like the reaction I had to that one.

There was one about wearing wellies on an escalator and standing too close to the side. If you did your feet would be chewed up (in my 8yr old head).
I still think about it today when stepping into an escalator!

I think the same is true of crocs?

justasking111 · 10/06/2025 22:42

Don't know if it was on TV or at school but it was a nuclear bomb one. The remains of the body looked like a shadow on the wall. Terrifying.

novanoir · 10/06/2025 22:45

Not an advert, but does anyone remember the weathergens that used to be shown after the news? They would always be fitting with what the weather was doing at the time. Fog lady (mirka) and the wind man (can’t remember his name) used to scare the absolute shit out of me, and still does. I used to make my mum and dad turn the telly over once the evening news was done as it would come on straight after.
they’re on YouTube if you search weathergens 😭

PetsDogsCatsMouse · 10/06/2025 22:46

The seatbelt one, I can still hear the moan and the description something about you just killed the person in the front seat. It was horrific. Also the anti smoking adverts. I remember one with a distorted head and smoke around it. My parents both smoked and this ad terrified me.

I remember them. I didn't find them scary perse, just overly dramatic. My sister's friend used to hate them.

What year were these on as I don't recall them?

1996 and got pulled in 2001. Scary things!

strangeandfamiliar · 10/06/2025 23:03

A seventies road safety one, where a little boy ran out into the road. His mum called for him in panic and dropped a box of eggs with a really horrifying crunch.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 10/06/2025 18:16

The 80s AIDS ones were pretty scary.

Yeah the AIDS monolith one terrified me as a child. I had no idea what it was about, just that I could apparently catch it and it would kill me. I watched it recently on YouTube and it transported me straight back to that childhood fear generated by it.

MedievalNun · 10/06/2025 23:44

Being a child of the 70s and 80s, the road safety ones and the nuclear ones in the 80s.

I now have the ‘Julie knew her killer’ one on a reel in my head - horrific but got the message across. And I’d forgotten about the escalator ones but it does explain why I take ages to step onto and off the damn things 😏

Evenstar · 10/06/2025 23:52

The insurance advert where the Grim Reaper appears on a train, I think it was pulled after lots of complaints

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 10/06/2025 23:54

Confidential Telephone one in NI. Ruined Cats in the Cradle for me. The shooting scene in the bar. My family ran a bar at the time. All I could think was that would be almost my whole family wipef out.

NI got more graphic commercials as we were more desensitised apparently. The worst road one for me was the little boy playing football in the garden.

RabbitsRock · 11/06/2025 00:17

I seem to remember one warning about rabies but can’t recall any details.
