How do you suddenly just get sick?

Very odd question I know, but it has just happened to me.
Was fine going to bed, woke up fine, although feeling a bit woozy and then just out of nowhere I felt nauseous and was physically sick (more than once, sorry, gross TMI)
Now, I’m back in bed, feeling dizzy and a bit like a delicate flower!
Curious as to how it just seemingly came out of nowhere.

It happens.

About 2 years ago, I was perfectly fine during the day. My poor dh had just lost his mum and was grieving over that. Then that evening, I threw up and I was in agony in my side.

I ended up going to hospital and was in there for 8 days with pancreatitis and dudoenitis.

It literally came out of nowhere

MsPug · 10/06/2025 10:19

I went to bed absolute fine, woke up felt a bit sick then immediately soent the next 3 hours puking. Was fine after 🤷🏻‍♀️ not even a build up of feeling am I or aren't i?

once as well I got up was fine then started feeling funny and ended up
in bed for a week with flu. Came out of nowhere

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 10/06/2025 10:23

Very common.

Flu in particular starts completely out of the blue. Literally fine one second, violently ill the next.

You're very fortunate if you've never experienced this before.

It sits in your system for about 2 weeks before it begins to affect you. Incubation period I believe they call it

Blodyneighbour · 10/06/2025 10:34

That's norovirus for you!

WeeAgnes · 10/06/2025 16:27

Yes, I think you are right @Blodyneighbour
I feel absolutely awful. Can’t move without the need to puke.
I’ve had the flu before, and migraines but that always seemed to clear up after vomiting, but this is different.

ExH and I once came down with norovirus within 1 hour of each other. We thought it was food poisoning but it wasn't because people we had been with at that time came down with it after us.

Dolamroth · 10/06/2025 16:37

When you say you felt dizzy and woozy and can't move without puking have you considered labyrinthitis?

It's an infection of the inner ear and I had no warning when I had it. Felt a bit like when you're drunk and the room spins. I had to lie on one side for days and if I moved I was sick. Was horrible.

Just a thought

verycloakanddaggers · 10/06/2025 16:39

There's always a delay between exposure to a virus and exhibiting symptoms, different for every virus.

JohnTheRevelator · 10/06/2025 17:23

Sickness and diarrhoea from food poisoning or a bug can strike incredibly quickly. I know from experience. About 4 months ago I went to bed at 11pm feeling fine, was asleep by midnight, woke up an hour later with the most awful pain in my guts and feeling sick. Had dreadful diarrhoea over the next 24 hours. I still don't know if was something I ate (couldn't identify anything it could have been) or a bug.

Eyelashesoffire · 10/06/2025 17:27

Same thing happened to me last night. Quite happily getting ready for bed and then felt a bit odd, suddenly I puked everything up. It just came from nowhere. I'm guessing a bug as noone else in my family was ill. Today I just feel a bit tired and fragile 🤷🏻‍♀️

EveryKneeShallBow · 10/06/2025 17:36

My daughter once phoned to ask if I fancied chippy tea because she was passing the shop on the way home. I said yes. By the time she’d got home with it I was not in a fit state to keep anything down.

Thanks all for sharing your experiences.
Only feeling marginally more human today.
Absolutely horrendous, the nausea has been the worst.
