Do you believe you'll see your pets who have died again in an afterlife?

My gorgeous boy died today and I'm holding on to the hope I'll see him again one day. It's incredibly painful without him.

They'd better be there. Wouldn't be much of a heaven if they're not!

I found Danielle Mackinnon on YouTube very helpful OP. There are lots of others too who give hope and comfort at this time 💐

I do believe in God and in heaven, but if pets aren't allowed then I'm going with my pets to somewhere we can be together.
There is an afterlife, I'm certain of it, and people we have loved find one another, and we find our pets. During our boy's last half hour, we were spending time with him before the vet came back and he got a spurt of energy and went and hid, peeking out at us with a mischievous grin. That grin and the eyes were so much my father-in-law's and I'm convinced he had come to meet a much loved doggie.

A pp has just solved my problem that I've had for three years! I haven't been able to let go of his ashes, nothing and nowhere felt right. It's obviously so we can be scattered together!!!! Thank you ♥️

HoppingPavlova · 08/06/2025 11:08

I just don’t know, but I really, really hope so.

TheGrimSmile · 08/06/2025 11:12

Im a very rational person. But there's part of me that thinks maybe we will...I hope so.

Dodeedoo · 08/06/2025 13:49

I believe that you will. I’m so sorry for your loss.

ps . Those who bluntly replied ‘no’ are cold hearted bellends!

You're welcome 🤗

I want me and Little to just be mixed up and put in a nice pot together. It will feel like we're whole again.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/06/2025 14:47

I’ve read many an account of spirit animals, so who knows?
Very sorry for your loss.

Like @Init4thecatz said, surely the only answer to the question "Are our pets in Heaven?" is "Well if they're not, it's not Heaven!"

We lost our last little cat in February. He was a lovely gentle wee soul, a bit timid because he hadn't had a particularly good life before he came to us but adored us and our dogs. DH and I have both "seen" (or rather, felt) him since, just one time each but it's given us so much comfort.

So sorry for everyone's losses.

I like to think it will be like this. It brings me comfort since losing my cat in February. She was the best cat I ever knew and I miss her so much.

When I was a young child, I went to Sunday School and this question was asked by another child in our group. The Sunday School teacher replied that an animal cannot go to Heaven because it doesn't have a soul. This answer horrified me and I stopped going to Sunday School. I have never believed that animals lack a soul and firmly believe that our beloved pets will be waiting for us on the other side. Not long after this Sunday School situation, I was reading one of James Herriot's books in which James was asked the same question. His reply is one of my favourite quotes:

"If having a soul means being able to show love, loyalty and gratitude then animals have more soul than most humans."

So sorry for your loss. Yes I absolutely do think so. I also believe they are still around us somehow.
When we lost our boy recently we all had different dreams with him in, of felt him jump up on the bed, or heard him sigh.

I found Andrew Huberman's YouTube video on grief very helpful. It's quite long but I watched it in a few sittings. In it he acknowledged the loss of an animal in the same way as a human and I was very grateful to him for that.

One night following the death of my beloved cat, I was sure I felt her jump up onto the bed, just as she always did. Your post brings great comfort as I’ve always hoped it wasn’t my imagination!

Op I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my precious dog just over a year ago and the pain is still so intense. The only thing that got me through the months afterwards was the hope that I’d see her again one day 🩷

Tina294 · 08/06/2025 15:42

Humans are mammals and mammals are animals - if you believe in Heaven then there's no reason to think they'd let in one sort of animal and not another surely?

Humans might think they're superior but they're still just another animal at the end of the day.

blueshoes · 08/06/2025 15:45

No.

But take whatever comfort you need whichever way you can get it.

CoughCoughLaugh · 08/06/2025 15:51

My heart hopes yes, but my head hopes no, just because how would it work? I've had so many pets over the years that I have loved with all my heart whilst they were with me but some of them had to be only pets as they couldn't get along with others. So maybe you think, in the afterlife they would all get along, but then they wouldn't be the pet that I loved them for, their sassiness, their desire to be your only companion, so I don't know, I'm very torn. I feel the same way about being reunited with loved ones, how does it work if you were parted from the love of your life because they died but you then went on to meet someone else who you loved equally. Who do you meet up with in the afterlife...? But that's a different thread and hurts my head and heart to think about.

It's supposed to be all love. There is enough love in heaven to go around for everyone. Apparently you meet who you want to meet. So you could spend sometime with one human/animal, then spend time with another.

Oh, I honestly didn't know that was how it was supposed to work. That would be nice. But that then begs another question, what happens if I love someone and want to meet them again, but they didn't love me and don't want to...? Would it just seem that they loved me? But that would be a lie? Or do I not get to see them and I'm sad for all eternity? Or do I just not remember them? The thought of forgetting all about someone that I loved makes me even sadder. Sorry, I'm digressing again, heart and head at war again!

Toolatetoasknow · 08/06/2025 20:59

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my dearest girl last year. I've been lucky, and had other pets, but she was special. I've never known such pain.
Writing helps. I mention it, because looking back over the early memories that I wrote down, I find I recorded things that a year later had slipped away from my mind. So, maybe you could start a journal for your good boy now.

I hope with all my heart we see them again. I don't think I've been good enough to get to heaven myself, but she was good enough for both of us, so maybe.
There's an awful lot of cliches around death, but it's absolutely true that they leave 🐾prints on your heart.

Valkyrie3 · 08/06/2025 21:00

Of course not.

But yes we absolutely do

Sending you lots of good wishes op

I don't believe in conventional heaven OP but after the experiences I've had I know our energy lives on in another form as does love.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 09/06/2025 07:42

I think reincarnation is a likelier possibility than a 'heaven' afterlife, and it's possible you will encounter the same loved ones again, human or animal, though not necessarily in the same species - your cat in this life might return as your sister in your future life, for example; or might even be reincarnated within your own life as another cat, dog, person etc.
