Have I left it to late hair

I'm going on holiday on Wednesday. I was going to dye my hair in the hope I won't look in my 90s. But I just read this chlorine can make it go green. Fade etc . That's for permanent and semi.

I also had a brain wave to do reverse perm so my hair his straight for a longer period of time.

So now sure what to do because of timing. And the haot going green and not sure I can even do both.

To note : i can't do it via hair dressers. I'm not using hair straighteners. As a one of I will if I do reverse perm. There are reasons for this but it's to much to go into.

Also if I go for a copper color will is look orange in the white parts of my hair

@Youagain2025 The links are above, for some reason it wouldn’t let me add them to my post. The bots curl crème is the best one I’ve found and I’ve tried plenty of high end ones over the years.

Using permanent it semi permanent I think the possibility of your grey hair ending up orange is very high - not a statistician but I'd say 95% (voice of experience).

It will not blend in with the rest of your hair. You will have a ring of orange round your head.

Get a deal conditioning mask
It doesn't really matter which you get. They are usually in a tub. slather it on, paying particular emphasis to your ends.
Leave for 15 minutes past whatever time is on the tub.

Comb through starting at the end of your hair (furthest from your roots.)

Wash out.

Shampoo hair, condition it with normal conditioner, comb through, rinse, dab your hair dryish with a towel (don't rub it). Comb through again.

Blow dry or leave to air dry. If you blow dry use a downward method - so you are smoothing the cuticles down.

After so much conditioner your hair may feel greasy. Just wash it again - the next day or if you can't bear it later that day.

Next time you wash your hair put conditioner on the ends rather than the whole way up to your roots.

Does it look like you've got split ends? If you have plait your hair and trim off the bits that stick out of the sides.

If you want to cut your hair I'd do it damp.Get a pair of proper hair dressings scissors and look at a few you tube videos. Only trim a small amount 1/2" / couple of cm. When the hair drys it will shrink up a bit.

Don't tackle your fringe unless you are feeling super confident.

You can if you want rather than cutting across cut up, or I've eve tackled my fringe with a safety razor to thin it out (risky)

On holiday you can buy spray in conditioner/after swim stuff

Get some scrunchies and tie your hair up.

And to reiterate don't dye it . If you make a hash of it it it will make you feel loads worse.

Honestly, it’s such a great white - I’d keep it (trim yourself and get conditioner wrap head in towel and leave on as long as you can!), and not colour it at all. Embrace the white xx

Quick thought but if the white bit is making you feel old (I like it personally) then how about some bandana style headbands to cover it? It won’t give you the closed in feeling like a hat and also keeps the hair off your face for hot weather.

Some do! 😂

It’s more a case of skill and experience, knowing which colours to use, how to apply them, understanding how grey hair takes the colour differently, maybe using more than one. It’s not a home job for a beginner just about to go on holiday, especially if you can’t go to a hairdresser to fix it if you have a disaster!

Also, everybody goes grey differently. Your hair is particularly difficult because it is white in a block around your face. If the greys were even distributed, any difference in colour would look more like highlights and blend in 🫤

Its known as "hot roots" and I think everyone who dyes their own hair has experienced it at some point (sometimes without realising!).

Think of how the same felt tip shows different colours on different colour paper.

If you dye your hair regularly enough, you don't get a chunk of root so this difference isnt noticeable. The thing with hot roots is that it is somewhat unpredictable whether you'll get them as there are so many different factors.

If you went to a hairdresser, they might dye your roots a different colour to your ends to get the same colour all over your hair. But I wouldn't even know where to start with that.

Although I still think your white is lovely!

The packet will usually say covers 10% grey or something. Grey hair takes up dye differently to non grey hair.

As per pp it's a really skilled job to colour grey and original/dyed hair with a home colourant colour. Ideally you don't mind if it goes wrong . It's a risk. I'm a serial home hair dyer and I've had, yellow, orange, green and mud coloured hair unintentionally. I never used to be fussed. But now I am and as my grey has 'come in' properly I go to a hair salon to have highlights in to blend the grey in

Uricon2 · 06/06/2025 17:58

OP, you've had some really good advice re conditioning. I coloured my hair for years (first white hair at 18) but eventually I realised that it simply wouldn't take in the same way over a lot of grey and it looked frankly odd. Your hair is really white at the front (lovely shade)and I think any box colour has the potential to go very wrong. Throw in chlorine from the pool and I wouldn't risk it.

Blending it all in with professional high/low lights might work but as that isn't an option, just get the condition as good as poss. BTW another vote for Boots Curl Creme pink pot to maximise the wave, it is fantastic.

Have a lovely holiday.

@Youagain2025 forgot to ask where are you going on holiday? Hope you have a wonderful time!

CoastalCalm · 06/06/2025 19:01

I’d get some leave in conditioner and just use that everytime you wash it - the heat and that will help it generally but it will calm the frizz and make it more manageable

We are going to Spain. It's my first holiday as an adult. So im kind of shitting myself. At the same time as feeling excited.

I decided to risk dying my hair. It can go 2 ways f#k or not a f#k up

I need to sort out what I'm taking with me . Try it all on make sure I don't look to much of a twat 😅

It's not the best. But I feel like taken the edge of it a bit and kind of dulled the whiteness .

Yay! Im glad you're feeling a bit better about it.
If you did cut it to the line, it would get rid of the uneven bits and make your lovely waves look really thick.

Youagain2025 · 06/06/2025 21:17

I took a bit more of. I'm going to leave it now because I cant really see what I'm doing . I can't rescue it if i go to short 😅

It definitely feels better and lighter. I don't like it 100% but it's ok . And I feel better than how it was before.

Im glad I didn't try and straighten it 🤣
