Have I left it to late hair

I'm going on holiday on Wednesday. I was going to dye my hair in the hope I won't look in my 90s. But I just read this chlorine can make it go green. Fade etc . That's for permanent and semi.

I also had a brain wave to do reverse perm so my hair his straight for a longer period of time.

So now sure what to do because of timing. And the haot going green and not sure I can even do both.

To note : i can't do it via hair dressers. I'm not using hair straighteners. As a one of I will if I do reverse perm. There are reasons for this but it's to much to go into.

Also if I go for a copper color will is look orange in the white parts of my hair

Why don't you like hairdressers?
Have you had a bad experience?

I'm not a massive fan, I hate the sinks, but I wouldn't go 9 years without going!

It's all pretty deep . Which I'm kind of touching on in the thread. But I don't want to go to deep. Because it messes me up mentally and emotionally it's just a me thing. But not as simple as I just don't like it.

Of course your hair grows, unless you were born with hair that length?

KnickerFolder · 06/06/2025 12:22

No! DON’T DO IT! You can’t repaint your hair if you don’t like it, like your sitting room 😂 You will be miserable on holiday if you hate it.

A hairdresser wouldn’t perm and colour your hair. You need to leave several weeks in between. Forget about the perm. Colour will make the biggest improvement and is easier to do at home. Toner would be the safest bet (see the link). A semi permanent colour would be okay but don’t try a new colour in case you don’t like it. I would suggest you pick a shade lighter than your natural colour or the same as your natural colour. Do you want to post a picture of your hair before you had greys so people can suggest a match?

My suggestion is:

  1. Take back those dyes, they are permanent dyes.
  2. Buy some some Superdrug Colour Effects wash in wash out conditioning colour in a shade similar to your natural colour. You can use it like hair conditioner. If it doesn’t cover your greys, you can apply it to dry hair for a more intense colour. If you hate it, you can always wash your hair multiple times to get rid of it! If you like it, it will last for your holiday. You can use it as conditioner on holiday if you want to be sure it doesn’t fade.
  3. If you want something more permanent, chose a semi permanent colour like L’Oreal Casting Crème. If you don’t like it, you won’t be able to get rid of the colour like you could with the temporary colour but it will fade a little with multiple washes.
  4. Buy a deep conditioning hair mask if you want smoother hair or a salt spray/beach waves spray and scrunch, if you want to embrace your waves and the beach vibe.
  5. Perhaps your DD or DS could trim your hair?

Have a great holiday!

Yes, it is possible for hair to stop growing or for hair growth to be significantly reduced or slowed down. This can happen due to various factors including genetics, age, hormones, stress, medical conditions, or medication. In some cases, hair follicles may even permanently stop producing new hairs, leading to hair loss.

I cant really do the wash in wash out at it will come out in the pool. I'm definitely not doing the perm /straight thing now. That's been put to bed 😅

I agree with a deep conditioning treatment. A leave in conditioning spray or oil could be good for on the holiday. You have a nice tan and nice hairline so could do the slicked back look.

Colour I wouldn’t worry about too much. I definitely wouldn’t do the permanent colour, too risky. Maybe a hair gloss which is semi permanent and conditioning. Or maybe a root touch up powder - this would give you more control over the result, but you would need to
condition first.

I wouldn’t do any kind of straightening, it’s not what your hair wants to do naturally and will just damage it and be hard to upkeep.

Enjoy your trip and remember nobody else will be judging your hair.

I think you have slightly misunderstood 😁 Each hair grows for about 2-7 years. It then stops growing and eventually falls out and is replaced by a new hair.

If you don’t cut your hair, it will reach its maximum length before falling out and being replaced. That is why your hair doesn’t appear to grow any longer. The maximum length is different for everyone. It depends how long your “growing phase” is.

WhiteCloudd · 06/06/2025 12:41

Your hair has a really nice wave to it. I’d put in a deep conditioning treatment and nothing else. I wouldn’t even wash with shampoo, only with conditioner.

If you really really want to do something and won’t get it cut then I agree with PP that a semi permanent dye would be something extra you could do.

KnickerFolder · 06/06/2025 12:43

The wash in wash out toner won’t come out in the pool! At least, it won’t be running down your face or leaving a trail of colour behind you in the pool 😂 It will fade faster from the chlorine and sun but you can just use it on holiday like normal conditioner when you wash your hair. It is literally like using shampoo. No complicated application! The bottle is travel sized too!

Oh so if was to cut a few inches of it. It would start to grow again? So if I dye my hair permanent colour but still dont cut it . It will eventually fade. Because I haven't cut it?

No, it won’t fade. A permanent colour is permanent. A semi permanent colour will fade.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/06/2025 12:54

I think your hair has reached its maximum natural length but I bet if you had it cut, it would grow.

Your hair is not dissimilar to how mine was in lockdown when I didn’t go to the hairdresser for over a year. I would avoid colouring it just before your holiday and I would definitely not have it straightened or use straighteners on it. I would go for a decent cut and leave everything else as it is.

I do understand your wish not to go to a normal salon. I hate having to look at myself in the mirror while my hair is being done! I wonder though whether there are any options that might be more palatable.

For example, are there any mobile hairdressers in your area who could come to you - or any who work from home? Alternatively, is there a local community centre that has a hairdresser in once a twice a week? A friend of mine goes to one. It’s usually older women who go, so it might not be such a daunting experience as a regular salon.

if you can manage that and feel rave enough to go again, you could try highlights to cover the grey. I just have mine done twice a year.

SoScarletItWas · 06/06/2025 12:54

If you dye it permanent it might fade a tiny bit to go a little lighter. But it will have to grow out. Permanent dye opens up the hair shaft and the colour is bound chemically to the hair.

Semi permanent coats the hair so gradually fades / washes out. I’ve never had it fade off COMPLETELY but then I’ve done layers of semi permanent over the years, it’s pretty built up now.

I don't want to do nothing though the whole point of dying it is do I don't feel so crap and old. But without stressing myself mentally etc.

It's not just about the location or the mirror. It's about being touched. About being looked at I'm not saying they would judge but it's just my feeling on being looked at . Them they start either straightening it or puffing it io in some way. Then the hair may look nice but then it's sitting on my ugly face . And its to much. But on my own I could tone down the crap grey/white so my hair looks better but not to the extreme of looking so great that there may as well be arrows point at my face.

I totally agree with not dyeing it before you go Especially if it's a sunny/beach holiday because it's so hard to anticipate what the sun and chlorine will do to your colour/texture. Focus on improving the condition - you can use normal conditioner and just leave it on for an hour (even overnight) before washing out. You could do this every night of holiday as you'll want to be at least rinsing daily to get the pool/sea water out.

When your hair is saturated with conditioner start at the very ends - use your fingers (or a wide-toothed comb) to gradually work out any knots before you rinse. Go gently.

If you dye your hair when it's dry and brittle you could make it break/fall out. Work on the condition first.

My hair is awful. I have tried to show it in theses pics

Well your natural colour looks lovely and bright. White doesn't equal old. Well looked after white hair can be bold and stylish.

Although even if it was aging, so what? We don't need to be scared of not looking 21.

I think that maybe, you'd get better results if you looked at your hair care routine eg deep conditioner etc. Improving the condition doesnt need to be hard work and will probably mean less effort in the long run.

I wouldn't use a load of chemical treatments in a short period. In fact perming solution (which Im guessing is the same as or similar to unperm) specifically says not to do it to close together.

Have you tried the holographic colourwow? It is a faff to use the first time but I do find it helps keep my hair smooth.

Ultimately you should be enjoying your holiday though, not worrying aboit your hair.

I totally get what your saying. But there's no hope in hell of me going to a hair dressers. But that does not stop me from getting conditioner on it at home.ok I can't do the cutting/dead ends. That's not good i get that but its going to take me a long time to build the confidence to go into a hair dressers . And me doing something at home is my way of building myself up to that .

Given your feelings about the hairdresser, I'd watch youtube to learn how to trim it yourself and focus on conditioning products.

Don't risk chemicals in case you make things worse.

I'm so confused. I'm sure people have been telling me it won't do anything ti thr colour dud i imagine that part or put it in my head 😭

But regardless i don't want to go on holiday looking like I'm in my 70s when I'm in my 40s . And I want to look at least ok. Not like a hag

Either way, if you dye it before you go you can absolutely still do lots of deep conditioning while you're away.

Get cloth hairbands and wear those in bright florals to draw attention there instead.

Get a range of nice hats and some cool sunglasses.

Get some bright sundresses.

You will notice the colours and people looking will see holiday vibe. It will stop you focusing all your worries on your hair which it doesn't seem you can get to the elusive state of happiness in time.
