I was discussing this with DS2 and DiL at the weekend
They are off on a long awaited road trip to the USA on Friday.
Im not particularly well travelled due to financial and disability factors but these are mine.
Oxford. As soon as I get there, I give a sigh of contentment and instantly relax.
I adore the beautiful architecture, the area around the Radcliffe camera is my favourite.
The view from the tower in " The high"
The bridge of sighs, and of course a punt down the river
I would live there in a heartbeat.
Mevagissey, Cornwall. Walking down the hill soothes my soul. Memories of wonderful family holidays with my 3 sons on the beach at Gorran Haven and evenings spent watching the harbour.
in fact any fishing village is calming and restful.
Florence, Italy. Went last year with DS2 and DiL
Truly breathtaking.
The Ponte Vecchio, I was born in Bath and lived there until 9 years ago. I now live in Bradford on Avon, which is another small town in Wiltshire known for its architecture and atmosphere.
Would love to hear yours, and visualise them.

Sitting before the view from my windows - I am doing it right this minute.

Abundant (but small) garden with a wild flower strip at the bottom and fields and rolling hills beyond.

I am quite unwell at the moment have little prospect of improvement or normal quality of life returning .... this view keeps me going. I do not know what I would do without it.

Strbske Pleso, Slovakia. My mum grew up at the foot of these mountains and I always try to get here when I'm in the county

Sitting on my bedroom chair, binoculars beside me, looking at the park behind the house, seeing the little kids learning to cycle on those (no pedal) trikes, dog walkers, speed walkers, the trees coming into leaf, the birds swooping, the mountains beyond, and the matches played on the pitch, with the delighted match supporters cheers - it's junior so it's kids. I have to force myself to get up and do something productive, but I could sit there for hours.

Best thing is, I don't have to go anywhere to see it!

Any beach. If it’s sunny with a sunbed then even better

smallglassbottle · 04/06/2025 09:42

Just being away from people and being around trees. I love the really big trees in particular. Seeing and hearing the seagulls flying around is also so calming and beautiful. Their white bodies and wings against the blue sky.

The Norwegians fjords, maybe Sognefjord in particular because that's where I've spent most time. The peace, the feeling of space - elbow room if you like, still water with life around the edges. The way dramatic cliff faces and towering mountains just casually disappear into the water, and you feeling tiny against it all. Driving around you'll come across huge and beautiful waterfalls which would be major tourist attractions in the UK but are just casually crashing down next to the road. The way you can just go places, park and explore without fanfare/driving dramas/pre booking/fighting crowds, things just work!

Just being on holiday goes it, away from the norm.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 04/06/2025 09:53

Being in nature. The mountains, the ocean, forests, moors etc

I like it where its quiet and there are no people to ruin it for me with a bluetooth speaker.

Scotland, god's ain country 🦄

Jasmin71 · 04/06/2025 09:58

Castlerigg and Langdale in the lakes. Beautiful places.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 04/06/2025 10:01

North Norfolk. Something about the huge skies, the light and the sea just calms my spirit.

The livery yard where I keep my horse. It’s peaceful, beautiful, stuffed with gorgeous views and nature, plus I get to hang out with my girl and breathe in her gorgeous sweet horsey smell. It’s medicine.

And, closer to home, my garden. It’s only little, but it’s stuffed full of life and I love it.

The dead sea, Jordan as the sun goes down . It's beautiful 😍

Poonu · 04/06/2025 10:04

Love the vibrancy of central London.

These are making me smile. From the sun to the Fjords. Everyone has a happy place!

I live in New Zealand…the Southern Alps, Central Otago, Fjordland ( especially Doubtful Sound), the West Coast of the South Island.

beguilingeyes · 04/06/2025 10:33

One of mine is Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. I could have stayed on a little boat puttering around those islands forever.

My first choice would be the view I grew up with, which is looking across the river Severn to the Welsh hills. It's beauty and mystery never fails. Then there's West Wales, in particular the view from the road as you descend into Broad Haven. The first time I saw it 50 years ago, it actually did take my breath away. Finally Italy - where to start! But if I had to pick one I would say the view from Fosdinovo Castle in the Lunigiana on the border of Tuscany and Liguria.

Brighton

piscofrisco · 04/06/2025 11:31

The Peak District and specifically Curbar and Stanedge Edge, where I grew up.
The woods and walls around my old village-It was the place I’ve felt most at home and it was sort of magical to me how peaceful it felt there. I miss it every day.

MinnieMountain · 04/06/2025 11:41

The view over Whitesands Bay and Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire. It feels peaceful and ancient.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/06/2025 12:02

North Norfolk for me too. I’m off there next week.

whitewineandsun · 04/06/2025 12:05

Iceland. I absolutely felt at peace there like nowhere else ever.

Piratejenny99 · 04/06/2025 12:10

West Coast of Scotland, I love the wildness. Luckily I live there but I can't imagine living somewhere flat with no coastline.

Pinkseashellsonthesand · 04/06/2025 12:33

The place that takes me away, that allows my troubles to recede, makes me feel alive and happy is, and always has been, a beautiful sandy beach by the lake that I have known all my life.
To walk on the wet brown sand at the water's edge and feel my feet sinking, as if walking on a sponge, to look back as my foot prints disappear as if I had never been there. To look out over the endless expanse of water, shining like silver in the light.
The waves are exhilarating, and the blinding sun, the constant musical rustling of the poplar trees that line the top of the sand dunes, place me in another world.
It seems never to be quiet at the beach, and the gentle rushing of the wind drowns out all thoughts and makes me smile with pleasure.
The unmistakable scent in the air of freshwater awakens something in my soul and has always made me feel rested relaxed and ready to start anew.
