Where in the world feeds your soul?

I was discussing this with DS2 and DiL at the weekend
They are off on a long awaited road trip to the USA on Friday.
Im not particularly well travelled due to financial and disability factors but these are mine.
Oxford. As soon as I get there, I give a sigh of contentment and instantly relax.
I adore the beautiful architecture, the area around the Radcliffe camera is my favourite.
The view from the tower in " The high"
The bridge of sighs, and of course a punt down the river
I would live there in a heartbeat.
Mevagissey, Cornwall. Walking down the hill soothes my soul. Memories of wonderful family holidays with my 3 sons on the beach at Gorran Haven and evenings spent watching the harbour.
in fact any fishing village is calming and restful.
Florence, Italy. Went last year with DS2 and DiL
Truly breathtaking.
The Ponte Vecchio, I was born in Bath and lived there until 9 years ago. I now live in Bradford on Avon, which is another small town in Wiltshire known for its architecture and atmosphere.
Would love to hear yours, and visualise them.

The Scottish Highlands and North Wales both make me feel completely at ease and so peaceful. I love being in remote landscapes surrounded by hills, moss and trees.

Misspotterer · 05/06/2025 07:46

My home country Scotland. I live 10 mins from a beautiful range of hills for walking with spectacular views, and 10 mins from the beach.

heartsinvisiblefury · 05/06/2025 07:47

The Netherlands- I adore the place

RabbitsRock · 05/06/2025 07:54

I love being near water, especially the sea. Lucky enough to live in Cornwall so spoilt for choice for beautiful beaches. We also have some stunning gardens & when the camellias, magnolias etc are in full bloom it’s incredible. Not visited much but strongly pulled towards The Yorkshire Dales with the dry stone walls criss crossing those green hills. Somewhere I would go back to in a heartbeat is Laugharne in Carmarthenshire & the boathouse where Dylan Thomas lived. The lake there is absolutely beautiful, so serene & instantly calming. I also love to be in a wood, as long as it’s not too dense. Trees definitely feed my soul. Oh & I am in heaven surrounded by roses. One of my favourite places used to be a National Trust rose garden but sadly it wasn’t maintained.

London has done this for me since I first came here on a school trip in my teens. I've lived here for 40 years now and I still stumble across bits I've never seen before. I love the buzz a d the 2000 odd years of history under my feet.

Walking the dog round our village and enjoying the lovingly tendered gardens, the Farrow & Ball front doors (I love a pretty door!) and the wildflowers that spring up here and there.

Parts of the Lake District which is my idea of heaven on earth. I feel excitement and peace at the same time there.

The beaches in North Norfolk. Everyone and their dog just seems so happy to be there.

Lovely thread - thanks OP.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 05/06/2025 08:32

I love the Lake District and The Peak District in general. Buttermere is a favourite. I recently managed a snow walk to the lake side itself and I could’ve stayed there forever.

And my garden is soul soothing. It’s nothing fancy and we’re not gardeners so it’s mostly grass and bushes/hedges but I love listening to the birds when it’s quiet and the sound of the neighbours’ kids playing with their friends is always lovely too - especially now mine are past that stage.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 05/06/2025 08:42

Assynt area of Sutherland.

A little bit of Cumbria around Asby/Orton, Sunbiggin Tarn and Gamelands stone circle.

A tiny nature reserve in Lancashire where I walk my dogs.

garlictwist · 05/06/2025 09:34

I grew up in the Lake District near Ullswater so going home there is a happy place for me although I think there are more beautiful places in the world. I love Torridon and Glen Affric in the Highlands and the pine forests in Tenerife.

PeachTrifle · 05/06/2025 09:48

Scottish Highlands - could not pick a specific area but Assynt and Torridon are right up there.
Oxford - ds was at University there and I used to visit a lot - and still do even though he's not there any more! Like op, I could happily live there.
Brighton - doesn't exactly feed the soul but I lived there for a number of years and it makes me feel happy and a bit giddy going back.
A particular area of the Greek mainland coastline (not saying where!) which feels like a second home.

tralalal · 05/06/2025 10:13

Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca, more specifically the end of Pine Walk where it’s quiet and residential and where I can breathe. More controversially, Tel Aviv, I feel like I have come home. My heart and soul are together i feel complete and I’m no longer “other” The food, the beaches, the shops, the architecture, the parks, the taxi drivers, the sea, the people, the history and the fact that Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs live side by side.

Es Canar in Ibiza, round the bend of the road past the hippy market is a reasonably quiet beach bar next to the camping ground which is beautiful and always feels calm even in high season. Steelhouse Festival and Download Festival, so many different people coming together just (mainly) for the music and the togetherness - especially if the weather is kind😍

Shmoigel · 05/06/2025 10:16

Weirdly! Camden market for me Its nowhere like it was in the 90s but It definitely feeds my inner teen!

I also love Ramsbottom in Lancashire

I loved Es Cana! It definately has a 90s vibe!

Anywhere in Latin America. The more rural the better 😍

FlatStanley50 · 05/06/2025 10:27

Crete - absolute bliss, love everything about it
Mevagissey - also love the walk down the hill!
NYC
Newcastle - best place in the world

weegiemum · 05/06/2025 10:29

The Outer Hebrides. Used to live there and have our house to go back to when we retire. Nowhere else like it!

Framilode · 05/06/2025 10:49

Uganda. I was brought up there and had the most wonderful, free childhood. I am in my late seventies but recently went back there on a sentimental trip. As soon as the plane landed and I saw the red earth and the blue sky I felt I was home and at peace. I even revisited my childhood home which, incredibly, was exactly the same as it was in the 1950's.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 05/06/2025 10:54

Rovaniemi, Finland. I gelled very well with the locals, I guess introverts bond well with other introverts. Loved the cold clear feeling of everything, sat out in my log cabin.

They even have single person tables by default in the cabins, and they didn't pressure me to wear more than I wanted in the cold.

The Baltics always treat me as one of their own :D

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/06/2025 10:56

Paris, most of Japan, St. Ives and the view from our flat in Perth (and Kinross).

theworldhasgonebonkers · 05/06/2025 11:00

Es Cana! YES! There is a long coastal walk from there to Santa Eulalia which passes hippy camps, gorgeous beaches with palm trees and colourful yatchs bobbing around on the ocean. The walk passes the back of a couple of posh Hotels and boho chic beach bars playing their chilled beats..

Doesn’t get much better than that for me ♥️

Reonie · 05/06/2025 11:13

So so so many places. I love travelling. Most happy in amongst a forest, a real tree-hugger, me.

Crushed23 · 05/06/2025 11:27

Lake Bled, Slovakia
Puerto Escondido, Mexico
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Pai, Thailand
Antiparos, Greece

Kew gardens!! I'm a new member and it's wonderful 😊

stayathomer · 05/06/2025 11:31

Just sinking my feet into the muddy part of the sand at any beach. Bliss.
