Do you clean the inside of your wheelie bins ?

myrightarmandleg · 02/06/2025 11:06

I am considering having the general waste bin cleaned inside and then using large bin liners to line the bin to stop it getting so filthy again.

One-off bin clean = £28
Pack of 20 large bin liners = £6.99

what does everyone else do ? I don't feel like I will need the bin cleaned every month, if I use bin liners

Honestly, I can't think of any reason why I'd want to pay good money to clean my wheelie bin...
It spends it's whole life living outside, and at no point am I touching any part of it, apart from the handle to wheel it to the bottom of the drive, or the corner of the lid when I open it to put a bag in...

If I genuinely thought it was getting really honky, I'd give it a hose out myself and maybe throw some bleach or fairy liquid in it.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/06/2025 11:18

Mine gets done after each collection by a local company who follow the route, it only costs £2.50 a wash so we'll worth it for me not having to think about it.

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 02/06/2025 11:20

Ours doesn't really get dirty, everything that goes in is in bags or is dry items.

Roundaboot · 02/06/2025 11:22

Agree with @zingally that I'm perfectly comfortable with having a dirty bin! Not that they get too bad anyway as everything that goes into the general waste is bagged up anyway and the food waste is dealt with separately. Wheelie bin liners just seem like extra plastic waste to me.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/06/2025 11:24

Only clean it if it's that bad.

Goingtothebeach101 · 02/06/2025 11:25

We clean it ourselves with the pressure washer once in a while. Maybe once a year.

I honestly wouldn’t pay someone to clean the wheelie bin. It’s a bin that lives outside. I don’t really care if it’s dirty.

DaisyChain505 · 02/06/2025 11:25

A bin is a bin. You’re not going to because g it for any other purpose. Life is too short to be worrying about how clean the thing that lives outside and holds your rubbish is.

AsIsaidearlier · 02/06/2025 11:25

I either use the hose pipe or a pressure washer to clean my bins. I like my bins to be clean.

myrightarmandleg · 02/06/2025 11:26

my bin has not been cleaned in 6 years. In that time, bags have been thrown in and split/food has gone in/spilled. We have had maggots. I am the only in the household who separates the waste as it is binned/separates others' waste before it goes in the wheelie bin

We have a separate food bin, only clean that in the summer.

HoldmecloseTonyDanza · 02/06/2025 11:28

Occasionally I pay my bin co. to do it, costs about a fiver added into my bill.
More often I clean it myself with a power washer and a yard brush.

Pelvicpaininthebum · 02/06/2025 11:36

No..it's a bin.

DontTouchRoach · 02/06/2025 11:39

A lovely bloke comes and cleans ours every other week for £3 a go. I’m not at all bothered about that sort of thing generally, but it’s made them noticeably less whiffy and driveway layout used to mean we could smell them every time we went in or out of the front door. After getting them cleaned as one-off because one of them had maggots in it, we realised that it was actually the bins themselves that smelled awful, rather than the rubbish within.

If maggots are the main concern, give it a good powerwash and leave to dry, then spray some slices of cheap white bread with white vinegar and throw them into the bottom of the bin before you add your rubbish bags.

boredwfh · 02/06/2025 11:44

We have a company that come around fortnightly & clean the black bin for £3. Google it & im sure you’ll find one similar

CyclingAddict · 02/06/2025 11:45

Wheelie bin liners 👍🏼 secure with clothes pegs if needed

I save myself £60+ a year and still don't ever think about the cleanliness of my bin.

This is probably the most I've thought about my bin in 20 years.

SunshineAndFizz · 02/06/2025 11:50

We also have a local company who will clean for £3 a go, they come on bin days so they’re always empty when cleaned. Can do it as regularly as needed.

Fair enough, I don't notice the money and I don't have to clean it myself, support a local guy in his business etc
Fine if you don't want to also 🤷

VexedofVirginiaWater · 02/06/2025 11:55

I have a company do mine on bin days for £2.50 per bin. I just have the non-recyclable and the cans/plastic bins done every time (fortnightly) as the paper and card one doesn't need doing. I only have the garden waste bin done at the end of the season - usually the end of November - when they stop collecting. They are kept near my front door and on weeks when they haven't cleaned them due to holidays etc I have noticed that they smell, so this saves me a job.

Mangolover123 · 02/06/2025 11:55

We have 3 bins, lovely man come round once a month to clean £13.50, job done. Happy to support a local making a living and have clean bins.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/06/2025 11:56

My general waste bin doesn't get dirty, but we have food waste collection here. What is happening in yours to make it filthy?

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/06/2025 12:02

Best method is to empty a bucket of hot water into the bin, followed by a kettle or two of boiling water, and a couple of dishwasher tablets. Close the lid, the steam will add to the cleansing. Swirl the water round by rolling the bin about a bit. Leave to soak for a few hours. Scrub with a cheap plastic broom. Empty water out down drain in street. Leave lid open to air dry.

Hoplolly · 02/06/2025 12:14

Never. It's never even crossed my mind.

There is a bin cleaning company that comes around and charges about £5 a pop. Money for old rope!

FunnyCrabDance · 02/06/2025 12:15

I pay a fiver a month to a bin cleaning company, not having to deal with stinky bins and the inevitable maggots every summer, worth every penny!
