Do you clean the inside of your wheelie bins ?

I am considering having the general waste bin cleaned inside and then using large bin liners to line the bin to stop it getting so filthy again.

One-off bin clean = £28
Pack of 20 large bin liners = £6.99

what does everyone else do ? I don't feel like I will need the bin cleaned every month, if I use bin liners

Even if I had ten million quid in the bank I wouldn’t pay someone £28 to clean a bin. I’m fortunate enough to have running water, washing up liquid and a hose. Fuck it, I might even get the pressure washer out and really go to town.

I do mine maybe once every two years.

thischarmimgwoman · 02/06/2025 12:20

Swill it out with a hosepipe or a few buckets of hot soapy water and a yard brush then use bin liners thereafter.

mindutopia · 02/06/2025 12:26

We don’t have wheelie bins because where we live it’s just black bin liners in a pile at the end of the drive. It’s rural and Dh literally has to load up his van with 2 weeks worth of potentially leaking rubbish in bin liners and drive it to the main road and just dump it in a pile. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But yes, we do wash our recycling bins, both indoor and outdoor ones, because they get pretty rank. Just spray them out at the outside tap and occasionally add some soap or bleach. Could power wash if absolutely necessary. I don’t think I could bring myself to pay someone to wash my bins out. It’s a 5 minute job.

Foreverhappiest · 02/06/2025 12:28

I pressure wash mine once a year on a hot summer day. The rest of the year we have a wheelie bin back inside and then black bin sacks. Once every three weeks here so we store it like that. Black bin bags sealed inside a wheelie bin bag.

Criteria16 · 02/06/2025 12:35

I pay about £7 per month to get all my bins cleaned twice a month. They just clean them after they get collected so I don't even have to be home.
I did try to clean them myself but it's too much of a faff and also bin liners never stay up.
As I utterly dislike the stink of them I like to have them regularly washed.

Whiteflowerscreed · 02/06/2025 12:36

We clean ours with the hose maybe once a month or every other month.

GetOffTheCounter · 02/06/2025 12:39

I have cleaned mine this weekend because a few unsocial locals have taken to entering my property (the only place the damned bin fits is just inside the front gate) and dumping their dog shit there. All well and good but someone does not tie the bags and so I got dog shit all over the bottom. So I had to put water and bleach in ot, then empty it out, put on rubber gloves and clean out the bags. Because I am NOT antisocial I did not empty the swirling mass of dog poop into the street and down the drain but into my own grass that I then washed away as much as i could with the hose.

My next job was to buy a wheelie bin lock.

Other than that- no. I don't clean out my bin. However my neighbour pays £40 a month to have hers cleaned by a chap who also does gutters and fascias. She has more money than I do.

ETA- the £40 is just for the wheelie bins. But he also does gutters and fascias. £40 for the whole lot would be a steal.

I just do mine myself, about once a month.
Boiling water with some washing up liquid. I clean round the rim and lid with soapy water. More soapy water inside the bin, let it soak, then empty it down the outside drain. If it’s particularly stinky, I add some disinfectant with the water.
Once it’s all dry, I put a few drops of lavender oil round the rim, it keeps away flies away, they don’t like the smell.

Ooh good tip!

IwantmyReptv · 02/06/2025 12:51

No, it's not dirty because only bagged waste goes in it. There's very rarely any meat in the bin either. If we have a chicken I double wrap the bones.

Cynic17 · 02/06/2025 12:56

Dear Lord, cleaning outside bins is a thing? Some people have too much time on their hands!

the80sweregreat · 02/06/2025 13:08

5 a month for one bin with a cleaning company for my green bin. He has made it into a good little business and I don’t mind supporting them ( until the price goes up again, then I might do it myself then!)
He has only increased the price once in ten years by a pound , which isn’t that bad and I’m saving on the cost of water ( am on a meter)

sequin2000 · 05/06/2025 08:20

This has reminded me of the time my bottle wheelie bin came back on bin day absolutely disgusting, coated with what looked like old milkshake and stinking. Spent ages cleaning it, then lecturing the household on emptying bottles before recycling. After the bin was sparkling I noticed a sticker on the side with the number of next doorConfused I was half tempted to demand they clean mine Grin

myrightarmandleg · 05/06/2025 08:57

I was tempted to pay the £28 for the clean but have decided I will do it myself with a £1 bottle of bleach and my marigolds.

@sequin2000 oh no !!!!! I hoped you pointed out your hardwork and efforts to your neighbours !

I pay a fiver once a month. For £28 I’d want a new bin delivered too! Lol

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2025 09:00

I clean it with a mop and Aldi disinfectant.

ChoppyChoppy · 05/06/2025 09:10

I clean my with my jet wash occasional. I do my neighbours at the same time as it hardly takes any time. They don’t get that dirty though. I’d never user bin liners as that feels too wasteful.

KiwiFall · 05/06/2025 09:23

We tend to do ours about once a year when it gets sludge at the bottom. Just done it as it smelt and there were maggots. We use bin bags but they sometimes split. Clean it ourselves with a mop (head which can be disposed off and replaced).

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2025 09:25

Not usually, but last summer I got maggots like. you. would. not. believe. and since then have been much more careful about washing any traces of food off things that are going to go into the bin.

uggmum · 05/06/2025 09:47

I have never cleaned my bin. All rubbish that goes in it is bagged.
I have had it for 20 years. Never had it cleaned.
it does not smell.

JulieBindelRocks · 09/06/2025 00:03

Only if I have an overwhelming urge to lick it. That is, never.

TheCraicDealer · 09/06/2025 00:22

We’ve had our black bin eight years and I’ve never felt the need to clean it to be honest, not even the brown bin. We get good bin bags that don’t split and food waste is disposed of separately. We got a knock on the door after we moved in from the bin cleaner guys; DH told them we wouldn’t mind the odd ad hoc clean but no, it’s £2.50 or whatever it was a week or nothing. The plastic liners are just more plastic waste going to landfill and I’m sure half the time they don’t bother cleaning the bin before replacing the liner.

Now tbf our bins are stored in the shade at the side of the house. I’m sure if they were in full sun or we were keeping them in an integrated garage or whatever I’d be a lot more fastidious about it.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 09/06/2025 00:22

I don’t, but loads of people do. I’ve never had a stinky or maggotty bin so have never felt the need.

spikefaithbuffyangel · 09/06/2025 00:32

Nope. My neighbour often tuts, and will jet wash and clean mine when he does his. He’s happy enough to do it!
