Do you clean the inside of your wheelie bins ?

myrightarmandleg · 02/06/2025 11:06

I am considering having the general waste bin cleaned inside and then using large bin liners to line the bin to stop it getting so filthy again.

One-off bin clean = £28
Pack of 20 large bin liners = £6.99

what does everyone else do ? I don't feel like I will need the bin cleaned every month, if I use bin liners

Never have, don't see any need to

XenoBitch · 09/06/2025 00:44

No. All my rubbish goes in black bags, then into my bin.
No need to clean it, and why anyway? It is not in my house

LoafofSellotape · 09/06/2025 07:34

I've had my bin 18 years, we have a bin collection every 2 weeks and the only place to store our bins is right outside our kitchen window. It's also in full sun most of the day so I like to keep it clean or we get maggots/smell. I doubt I'd bother if we could keep it away from the house.

HostaCentral · 09/06/2025 08:05

The recycling and waste bins never get dirty or smelly. Recycling is washed out before being put in and general waste is bagged up. Outside food waste bin I do myself every week after it's collected. Just sits outside with water and bleach in it until next needed. Inside food waste bin gets washed once a week.

Noshowlomo · 09/06/2025 08:06

£4 every 3 weeks for us. It’s great

Picklechicken · 09/06/2025 08:07

Never. Much rather spend that money on something else! It’s a bin; it’s dirty, who cares.

SharonEllis · 09/06/2025 08:09

I've never understood how the inside of a bin gets dirty. If you put food waste in the food waste surely your rubbish is basically dry? Its in a bin bag? How does the bin get dirty?

We don't have a separate food bin.

Storynanny1 · 09/06/2025 08:16

I paid once to have mine cleaned but it was no better than me swishing hot water around it and tipping it upside down to dry. I alway have a liner on it and most stuff is in a bin bag from the kitchen bin anyway. The wheelie bin liner stays on for a couple of months then i loosen it and that gets replaced.
In the hot months I sprinkle a bit of Jeyes granules in it, simply because it’s under my kitchen window and sometimes gets a bit smelly by the end of two weeks

Ah, ok, I thought all LAs collected food waste. That is more difficult.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/06/2025 08:23

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 02/06/2025 11:20

Ours doesn't really get dirty, everything that goes in is in bags or is dry items.

Same. Plus all food waste goes (bagged) in a separate bin. And everything that goes in the recycling (tins and jars etc.) is washed first.

countrygirl99 · 09/06/2025 08:25

Isn't there more than enough plastic pollution without adding wheelie bin liners to the mix?

We don’t have a separate food waste bin but it all goes into bin bags so as long as they don’t split nothing is going to leak into the bin.

storminabuttercup · 09/06/2025 08:30

mine gets cleaned once a month by a local guy, we’ve had maggots in there in the past and it was vile haven’t had the problem since
he gives it a good clean and sticks in a fresh bag I think I pay 30 quid for the year it’s worth it for me

Our area doesn't tend to use them as we have a big rat problem which got worse with the introduction of food bins.

Blobbitymacblob · 09/06/2025 08:47

I’d use a bin cleaning service if there was one near me. It’s a job I despise. Bloody dog walkers throw their bags in sometimes on bin day when it’s been emptied and if they split under the weight of two weeks of rubbish, the stench is disgusting.

In my old house I just lined the bottom with cardboard and never needed to wash it out.

Radiatorvalves · 09/06/2025 08:50

No. It’s not dirty even after years of use. The food bin on the other hand…. I did clean a couple of weeks ago. It was 🤢🤮🤢

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 09/06/2025 08:52

We don't have a food waste collection either, so ours does have food waste, but we use thick liners in the kitchen bin so they don't leak. Even though it sits in full sun outside the back door we've never had maggots or a bad smell, sometimes you get a slight whiff from the contents once you are into the second week but once it's emptied it's fine, I can't remember the last time we cleaned it.

SarfLondonLad · 09/06/2025 08:59

I clean ours myself. Used to pay to have it done but then the price got too dear. Kettle of boiling water and some bleach plus a home made long-handled scrubbing brush. Takes 5 minutes.

PashaMinaMio · 09/06/2025 08:59

Out of respect for our cleansing team I clean my wheelie bin every 3 weeks after it’s emptied. It only had “soft” plastics in it, crisp packets, plastic film etc.

I have an old mop & bucket, Jeyes Fluid, kept aside for just that.

ALL my bins and box, recycling bag & food scrapings bins are regularly washed out. My wheelie bin is not lined and I never get maggots.

I can’t imagine not cleaning my bins and making life, for 30 seconds, more pleasant for the bin men.

Myblueclematis · 09/06/2025 09:00

I pay £35 a year for my bin cleaner who does it once a month right after it's been emptied.

PolitePoster · 09/06/2025 09:05

We used to get ours cleaned once a month by a bloke who followed the bin wagon's route. Cost us about £3, I think. Then the DH bought a pressure washer and does it himself every six months or so.

ElixirOfLife · 09/06/2025 09:12

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/06/2025 11:18

Mine gets done after each collection by a local company who follow the route, it only costs £2.50 a wash so we'll worth it for me not having to think about it.

Same

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 09/06/2025 09:14

No. It would honestly never occur to me!

LavenderBlue19 · 09/06/2025 09:16

We get ours cleaned once a month. I started it when we had cats using a litter tray and a baby in nappies - it was utterly grim. We also had had someone put their rubbish in our bin and it had maggots, it was so disgusting.

It is a luxury and would be the first thing to go if we're needed to cut costs as we no longer have a baby and the only cat we have left goes outside, but I do like having it done.
