We are looking to stay in Romford for the Party in the park in Chelmsford. (Unless anyone can suggest anywhere else). We'll be there a Friday night .... any suggestions?

Stay out of the town centre pubs/bars, especially at night. It's like the wild west!

There is an ice rink, cinemas and a load of shops, restaurants, cinema and a market, although the market is not as big/good as it used to be.

There is also a bunkers - https://bunkersuk.com/romford/ - not been myself but have heard its quite good.

There are plenty of places to get public transport to, depending on what you like.

If its not to late/expensive to book now you would probably be better off staying in Chelmsford or as near as possible.

Romford has a small museum that's worth a visit. It's open on a Friday but closed on a Saturday.

If you're looking for something to do on the Saturday, Valence House Museum in Dagenham is about a 10 or 15 minute drive.

Why not stay in Chelmsford? The park is really near the town centre and both the Travelodge and Premier Inn within walking distance.

BigDahliaFan · 02/06/2025 14:04

Everywhere in Chelmsford is already booked up. Including Air B and B. The PI and the travel lodge are both full.

Romford looked like it has good train links to Chelmsford and only 30 minutes.

Ah, I am not surprised. How about Brentwood or Colchester?

BigDahliaFan · 02/06/2025 14:09

@DeltaAlphaDelta79 we'll be coming from Gatwick most likely rather than driving so staying nearer London makes sense...unless there's somewhere that has a good link from Gatwick.

The line up may be crap so need something cancellable!

I would definitely avoid Romford, its a horrid place.

There is a Premier Inn near Brentwood station and its a much better place for eating etc.

Have you tried the PI at Boreham for Chelmsford?

BigDahliaFan · 02/06/2025 14:39

@Ilovemyshed thanks for that. I'll look at Brentwood - as Romford was sounding a bit dire - even if we wouldn't be there for very long!

Romford's not that bad really all things considered.

And Brentwood is mostly full of people from Romford anyway.

Possibly during the day, but definitely not at night in the town centre!

Brentwood is full of people from Romford, because Romford is full of wannabe gangsters people from east and north London!

I worked in the night time economy in Romford for several years until very recently and it would absolutely not be somewhere I would recommend for a night out, which is a shame as I grew up there and it used to be a great night out!

Ahh, yes I see. The park is a trek from the train station though, just so you are aware.

purpleygrey · 02/06/2025 17:12

vile place. Avoid it at all costs!! 😂
Brentwood is a much better choice.

BigDahliaFan · 03/06/2025 15:47

Well the line up isn't really to our taste - or as DH said, I wouldn't walk down to the end of the road for most of them - never mind stay in Romford. So problem solved.

I thought the same to be honest!

twilightcafe · 03/06/2025 16:19

It's not a big headache in the scheme of things, but if you stay in Brentwood you will need to change trains to get to Chelmsford. There is a direct Romford - Chelmsford train.

twilightcafe · 03/06/2025 16:28

And yes - Romford isn't Knightsbridge - but it's fine for one night. No worse than other bits of outer London.

If you do stay in Romford, go for the Premier Inn in the town centre. I stay there when visiting family, and have no complaints about it. I've even SHOCK HORROR walked around the town without coming to any harm.

Last year's line up was pretty good - shame they got rained out on the Sunday thought.
