I'm 49, fat, fed up. I can't face the gym but have decided I should try doing some strength training at home to get myself started on the pathway to weight loss and better health, I hope. Does anyone have any good recommendations about a book to buy to help me? There are so many online to choose from.

I feel your pain….been there and simply could not face the gym. What worked for me was something called XBX…Ten Basic Exercises for Women. I read about it in a book about the wives of the early astronauts in the US in the 1950s. It was developed by the Royal Canadian Air Force to train their personnel.

It’s a set of exercises that need no special equipment and only take 11 minutes that you do every day. Dead simple, really effective. They cover the whole body and there’s a sliding scale of how many of each to do as you build up. They make a good start point.

It’s available free online…the web page is very basic but the approach really does work. Good luck whatever you decide to do!
