Need a handhold - son in hospital

Took him to A&E yesterday as he fell at the gym and we thought he had broken his wrist (thankfully just a sprain) however during their examinations they were worried about his circulation as his hands and lower arms were going blue and were cold to the touch, they advised we needed to make an appointment with his GP for further investigation.

Managed to get a GP appointment for 3pm today as the hospital suspect he could possibly have Raynaud's syndrome/disease

GP took his blood pressure and it was 177/127 , they thought the machine was faulty so got a another one and it was the same.

We had to take him straight to A&E, they’ve been trying to get bloods for the last 6 hrs but his veins keep collapsing and are unable to obtain his bloods, 2 doctors and 3 nurses have all tried with all sorts of needle sizes/cannulas etc… even with a vein scan machine, he’s been poked and prodded more times than we an count,

They’ve done a serious of tests, ECG, blood pressure cuffs on his arms and lower legs every 60 mins.

His only symptoms are some slight dizziness and some blurred vision, because of this they carried out a test where they turned the lights off and shown a torch in his eye… however the drs body language changed, she went and got her senior doctor to look and they redone the test.

We were then told to wait in the room as they needed to speak to a more senior doctor.

We were then put into a room, nurse came in about 45 mins later and advised he was being admitted, we asked why and she said has no one told you anything and we said no.

Doctor has come in and said DS is being transferred to another hospital, either tonight or tomorrow morning, he needs to see an specialist eye doctor , he also needs a urgent CT scan, possibly MRI and a heart scan as his ECG has shown some concerns and did we know he had a heart murmur.

They also need to get his bloods urgently somehow.

I’m not naive, I know what they are suspecting, I just need to be positive and hopefully the scans show nothing.

Hope you get some answers soon.

mummydoris2006 · 31/05/2025 15:48

Hi @HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend , my DD19 had a bad horse riding accident during her GCSE's resulting in a week long hospital stay and lots of missed exams. She took needed maths and English for her agricultural engineer apprenticeship. All that happened was they used her mock grades instead and she's been repairing combine harvesters and tractors happily for 3 years now. Hoping you soon get some answers and your son is back to himself.

When had he last eaten? That age weight and height, plus very sporty…. My first thought was…. They boy needs to get some food and electrolytes in him

Statistics is a different qualification, not part of the maths GCSE. Don't worry about the exams for now, the most important thing is getting him better. Exams officer and school can deal with that when you have more information.

LadyButtonofButtonHouse · 31/05/2025 15:56

Exams Officer here 🙋‍♀️

Contact the school, specifically FAO the Exams Officer. There are a couple of options, if he can sit it in hospital then the EO can apply to the exam board for an alternative site, an invigilator will come to the hospital. Alternatively, special consideration can be applied for - especially as he's taken one exam already, that'll help with the grade given.

Wishing him all the best

Madthings · 31/05/2025 16:06

No wise words, just thinking of you and sending love and strength. It's horribly scary when your children are poorly and you don't know what is going on. You are in the best place and it sounds like the trust injury means you can get to bottom of it quicker. Otherwise you would have been backwards and forwards to gp being referred to various teams. Hope you have answers and a plan ASAP.

Your Son gets prescription steroids op for eczema

that is rather relevant

why leave out that detail? Especially when you have 3 month supplies knocking about at home for him

I am prescribed 3 months supply of all our medications (asthma inhalers x3, steroids, eczema cream, acne antibiotics, high blood pressure and nerve block medication) we are in England.

Rachie1973 · 31/05/2025 16:22

Ah bless him. Exams can be worried about later xx

Are you seriously stalking the OP 🤨 that's information the doctor will already have. What's wrong with you?

Another nurse has come in, they are trying to get him a side room as he needs closely monitoring, said he will be in all weekend.

Dh has went home to pack us more clothes and toiletries for a longer stay.

I’ve had a quick google , he has his Math GCSE on Monday, all it says is to advise his teachers asap.

Is there anything else we need to do? - he needs his math grade for his apprenticeship, so I’m not sure how this work?

Edited

Contact the exams office at the school, tell them what's happened and tell them that you'd like to know about special consideration.

They will know what to do.

@Extraavailable it’s very obvious that the OP meant that the nurse suggested he was using steroids in a body building / bulking / illegal way not in a medication type way , no doubt she has told them what drugs he takes but she doesn’t need to disclose his entire medical history on this thread .

Jem57 · 31/05/2025 16:48

Big hugs 🥰

I’m sure if need be he could start his apprenticeship and take his maths GCSE whilst doing the apprenticeship under the circumstances. But it sounds like that hopefully won’t be necessary.
All the best. We’ve been transferred to Newcastle hospital with ill kids and had the best treatment and care.

I live in Newcastle the hospitals here are fantastic.

Could the op have more than one son? I’m not going to trawl her past threads to check.

Even if not, steroids for eczema is very different to steroids for bulking.

Earlyyearsteacher · 31/05/2025 16:55

Hi,
I hope that your son is well and you get sorted quickly.
My son was ill during GCSE's - glandular fever and had a hospital stay mid way through with deranged liver function.
School rang me as they had heard during a weekend revision session that he was in hospital.
He missed half a dozen papers and sat the last 4.
School applied for special consideration and we provided a letter from one of the nurses on Children's ward.
Give them a call or email and I am sure they will reassure you.

Take care and I hope your boy is better soon.

Steroids for a skin condition are completely different to steroids for muscle gain -
the nurse was implying anabolic steroids/testosterone use. The OP was correct in her answer to the nurse (afask).
