Need a handhold - son in hospital

Took him to A&E yesterday as he fell at the gym and we thought he had broken his wrist (thankfully just a sprain) however during their examinations they were worried about his circulation as his hands and lower arms were going blue and were cold to the touch, they advised we needed to make an appointment with his GP for further investigation.

Managed to get a GP appointment for 3pm today as the hospital suspect he could possibly have Raynaud's syndrome/disease

GP took his blood pressure and it was 177/127 , they thought the machine was faulty so got a another one and it was the same.

We had to take him straight to A&E, they’ve been trying to get bloods for the last 6 hrs but his veins keep collapsing and are unable to obtain his bloods, 2 doctors and 3 nurses have all tried with all sorts of needle sizes/cannulas etc… even with a vein scan machine, he’s been poked and prodded more times than we an count,

They’ve done a serious of tests, ECG, blood pressure cuffs on his arms and lower legs every 60 mins.

His only symptoms are some slight dizziness and some blurred vision, because of this they carried out a test where they turned the lights off and shown a torch in his eye… however the drs body language changed, she went and got her senior doctor to look and they redone the test.

We were then told to wait in the room as they needed to speak to a more senior doctor.

We were then put into a room, nurse came in about 45 mins later and advised he was being admitted, we asked why and she said has no one told you anything and we said no.

Doctor has come in and said DS is being transferred to another hospital, either tonight or tomorrow morning, he needs to see an specialist eye doctor , he also needs a urgent CT scan, possibly MRI and a heart scan as his ECG has shown some concerns and did we know he had a heart murmur.

They also need to get his bloods urgently somehow.

I’m not naive, I know what they are suspecting, I just need to be positive and hopefully the scans show nothing.

Send email to school, at this critical time they will likely be monitoring them

CunningLinguist1 · 31/05/2025 14:38

Thank goodness he hurt his wrist so they found this and can get him properly examined, tested and treated! All the very best wishes for getting him back to full health quickly

Thinking of you. Isn’t it strange how we can join these threads and become so invested in people we don’t even know - in my
case,
on the other side of world.

I really feel for you as a Mother. As the mother of a football loving 8 year old, I can only imagine. You did all this work to get him to be this big strong 6 foot plus man, about to embark on adult life and now to be waiting in a hospital.

I really feel very strongly he will be fine & heart murmors are quite common. Remember, UK’s finest medical experts pouring over his every breath and beat & loving parents at his side. The important thing is he that you had him seen to right away and before anything drastic has happened.

Praying for you, your boy & your family - sorry to take it religious but at times like these it all helps.

I really believe it will be fine but please update us xx

Hope you get some answers soon and a side room will be much better , it’s an awkward age for children’s ward and some privacy is nice . I would email the SLT at the school over the weekend as someone may pick it up and then call Monday but definitely don’t worry about exams they really aren’t important compared with his health .

Agree, no idea of the British system but if ever there was a time to practice common sense and extend grace, it will be now. Medical certificate and all the rest is what they would need or a form perhaps. Maybe flick and email to the school to keep them posted of the situation - they can sort out - any fair minded person would understand that you have more immediate concerns xxx

loulouljh · 31/05/2025 14:51

I was going to say maths is on Wednesday. Don't stress re that. Worse case he takes it in November. It will be sorted out.

Owmyelbow · 31/05/2025 14:57

I hope they find the cause soon and it's something that's easily treated.

Mumofoneandone · 31/05/2025 14:57

Take care of yourselves - I know it sounds strange but please look on this as a blessing. He went it with a possible minor injury and something more serious has been spotted and followed up on. He is in the best place and sounds like they are really looking after him.
Let the school know about his absence from the exam and they should be able to advise you how to proceed, but it should be fine.
Just take it a day at a time. Such a shock.
Sending you lots of prayers and blessings ❣️ 🙏

My neice went in for bad back last weds now has bone and lung cancer she's 15 speedy recovery for your son x

I’m very sorry to hear about your niece but I don’t think that was a helpful nor reassuring thing to say to OP whilst her son is in hospital and they’re still waiting for answers, wow!

Cantwaituntiltheyareover · 31/05/2025 15:02

@loulouljh and @Hercisback1
Standard maths GCSE is Wednesday for all boards I believe....igcse is different exam and indeed liable to be Monday as they are often different times and days

Thistooshallpass. · 31/05/2025 15:02

Wishing you and your son well - you sound amazingly calm and clear thinking which is great . A terrifying situation to be in yet you are keeping it all together for your son . I hope tests are quick and provide an answer. Very sad that he wasn’t investigated more thoroughly before this - but the wrist injury was a blessing - sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways .

Very helpful and encouraging to the op, I'm sure. What is wrong with you saying something like that?

LBFseBrom · 31/05/2025 15:08

We are all rooting for your son, it must be so distressing for you all right now. I hope a diagnosis is made soon and that all will be well. x

Another nurse has come in, they are trying to get him a side room as he needs closely monitoring, said he will be in all weekend.

Dh has went home to pack us more clothes and toiletries for a longer stay.

I’ve had a quick google , he has his Math GCSE on Monday, all it says is to advise his teachers asap.

Is there anything else we need to do? - he needs his math grade for his apprenticeship, so I’m not sure how this work?

Edited

Try not to worry there are three maths papers and he’ll only need to sit 2 out of 3 to be graded if he’s ill ( it’s better to miss papers as long as you meet the minimum percentage than to do when I’ll and apply for special consideration as tgst onky wastes to 2-3% maximum.

the third paper is not until 11 June ( worst case scenario if still in hospital school can apply for exam to be sat and invigilators in hospital!)

Hope you get clarity soon OP. Did you manage to mention the dental treatment to the consultant?

Apologies he has Edxcel Statistics written paper 1, exam on Monday.

He done really poor on his 1st math paper (higher) came home really frustrated and just said he knows he’s failed it 😞

Ive just told him , it’s a problem we will resolve another day, for now he just needs to concentrate on getting better.

Still waiting on consultant, once I know what we’re dealing with then I’ll email all involved regarding his exams, thank you everyone.

Contact the Exams Office at his school and he can either do the exam, with an invigilator, in the hospital, and/or a letter of special consideration can be sent to the exam board. If the exam is in the afternoon, then contact them as soon as possible in the morning. Hope this helps.

Advise the client exams officer asap. He should have already done one paper so the exam board will be able to use that and any course work to provide a grade

Hi @HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend firstly I’m sending you a ton of virtual support, really hope your son feels a lot better soon. Secondly, congratulations on your fab name. I used to be BellMcEnd many years ago so I think in MN world that must mean we’re sort of related. x

Nomdejeur · 31/05/2025 15:27

Could he have Glandular fever OP? He’s around the right age for it, it can cause raised heart rate (as I recently found out), extreme fatigue and can also lead to numerous other, worse problems such as heart and Kidney problems?

It may well be that whatever has been going on with him could add to extenuating circs for that paper too. But as you say, its not the important thing right now.

I get the worry about exams but there are things in place for this eventuality. Contact school first thing on Monday and they will lead you through it.

In the meantime, I just wanted to wish you well, as a mum who has had children in hospital, your mind can go to dark places, stay positive

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 31/05/2025 15:30

Have you been told what type of consultant you are seeing? Or which part of the body they are looking at in the scans?

From this thread you’ve had cardio, renal, autoimmune and head so lots of possibilities. Which must be making it confusing. Hopefully you will get some answers soon. Or at least more focused questions.
