Need a handhold - son in hospital

Took him to A&E yesterday as he fell at the gym and we thought he had broken his wrist (thankfully just a sprain) however during their examinations they were worried about his circulation as his hands and lower arms were going blue and were cold to the touch, they advised we needed to make an appointment with his GP for further investigation.

Managed to get a GP appointment for 3pm today as the hospital suspect he could possibly have Raynaud's syndrome/disease

GP took his blood pressure and it was 177/127 , they thought the machine was faulty so got a another one and it was the same.

We had to take him straight to A&E, they’ve been trying to get bloods for the last 6 hrs but his veins keep collapsing and are unable to obtain his bloods, 2 doctors and 3 nurses have all tried with all sorts of needle sizes/cannulas etc… even with a vein scan machine, he’s been poked and prodded more times than we an count,

They’ve done a serious of tests, ECG, blood pressure cuffs on his arms and lower legs every 60 mins.

His only symptoms are some slight dizziness and some blurred vision, because of this they carried out a test where they turned the lights off and shown a torch in his eye… however the drs body language changed, she went and got her senior doctor to look and they redone the test.

We were then told to wait in the room as they needed to speak to a more senior doctor.

We were then put into a room, nurse came in about 45 mins later and advised he was being admitted, we asked why and she said has no one told you anything and we said no.

Doctor has come in and said DS is being transferred to another hospital, either tonight or tomorrow morning, he needs to see an specialist eye doctor , he also needs a urgent CT scan, possibly MRI and a heart scan as his ECG has shown some concerns and did we know he had a heart murmur.

They also need to get his bloods urgently somehow.

I’m not naive, I know what they are suspecting, I just need to be positive and hopefully the scans show nothing.

Forget the exams, from the sounds of things he’s been struggling the last few weeks so won’t have done well on that first paper, he can do as retakes in autumn or next year when he’s feeling better.

A children’s hospital feels like such a weird place to be when it’s a hulking teen (been there) it adds to your sense of unreality about the situation but better than an adult ward especially for boys.

A shame the PA didn’t recognise there was a problem but doesn’t sound like that’s delayed things too much.

Hope you get a better nights rest and start getting some answers tomorrow Flowers

XelaM · 01/06/2025 00:13

Hoping for a full recovery for your son x

Incakewetrust · 01/06/2025 00:13

I’m so happy you have a bed! I hope you can get some decent sleep tonight.
I’m glad they have a plan of action for your DS. The not knowing must be driving you mad so I hope the tests show a clear cause that is easily treatable 🤞

CassandraWebb · 01/06/2025 01:11

Very glad you have a bed! I hope you manage some sleep

with 3 kids (all grown up now) i've spent a few nights in hospitals with them.
positive thoughts and a long distance hand hold.
youngest complained of chest pain one night off we went, i slept in the stretcher with him he was eventually diagnosed with pericarditis. middle child figure skated and one morning her ankle was double the size and she was in agony, she had developed a blood clot to one of the veins running along the ankle. eldest had a routine eye exam that resulted in a flight to a major city center to see a specialist. all well a few months down the road, very grateful for the specialists and their insight.

TupperJen · 01/06/2025 05:09

Best wishes to you both.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is to let the school know he's been "under" with this health condition for few weeks... maybe special consideration can also come into play with exams sat last week as well as forthcoming ones. I guess spelling it out to the school ensures he gets all allowances - they aren't to know when he started getting ill, and if you only ask for it going forward from now they won't be able to do anything about last week's exams.

EllasNonny · 01/06/2025 05:14

Thinking of you all. It must be such a worrying time. Ignore the dickheads and put exams out of your minds for now.
I have a life limiting condition, which has involved several very dramatic episodes. This has included major ops, comas, life support and ICU more than once.
DS has asthma and goes into anaphylaxis. He sounds quite similar to your DS. Once he caught swine flu and his heart was failing when I got A&E to finally take notice and take his bloods. The care you're receiving sounds far better.
You have my sympathy becauseI seeing DS ill is far far worse than anything I go through, but their strength and ability to recover their health is amazing and I hope you're back home soon. x

Sounds like you’re in very good hands! So glad you have a bed. Don’t forget to mention the recent dental work, as someone said. Sending hugs!

Sunnysidegold · 01/06/2025 06:18

Hi op, just wanted to send good thoughts, I really hope you get some good news soon.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 01/06/2025 06:25

You and your son are really going through the mill with this. Hope you both got some sleep on the ward.
Has he had COVID that might have attacked his heart and left him with a new hole or something? Hopefully the cardio team will find what it is, and quickly.
Wishing you both well and giving you a handhold. Scary worrying times.

Great advice and seconded. He needs special consideration for the whole exam period, this hasn't come on overnight.

Hope you both managed to get some sleep, OP, and that today brings some answers. ❤

Magnoliasunrise · 01/06/2025 08:19

Hope you both managed some sleep OP.

I'm a GCSE invigilator and you don't need to worry about exams. As soon as you get the consultants letter just send it to DS school and their examinations officer will take care of everything. I think there might be 2 days of catch up exams at the end of the GCSE's - but you don't need to think about it your DS school will let you know.

Sending hugs.

Another nurse has come in, they are trying to get him a side room as he needs closely monitoring, said he will be in all weekend.

Dh has went home to pack us more clothes and toiletries for a longer stay.

I’ve had a quick google , he has his Math GCSE on Monday, all it says is to advise his teachers asap.

Is there anything else we need to do? - he needs his math grade for his apprenticeship, so I’m not sure how this work?

Edited

I think the school will need a letter from the hospital to say he is unfit to sit exams for x days. Try and get it to them early Minday morning.

There are not two days of catch up exams.

Magnoliasunrise · 01/06/2025 09:13

Apologies, there are contingency days built into exams timetables. I'm not sure if it's for national emergency group considerations or individual. My point is that the OP does NOT need to worry at this very stressful time and should leave it to their exams officer to do the paperwork.

crumblingschools · 01/06/2025 09:14

Contingency dates are for national type issues not individuals missing exams

No there aren’t if you miss an exam you miss and exam there are no contingencies and there are no resits other than maths and English in November

the school will deal with it if they have the paperwork including getting special consideration for the exams done. All subjects have done a paper now so he should meet the 15% requirement to get a grade
hipefully he hasn’t done as badly as he thought with maths

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 09:34

I don't think there are Novemeber resits these days, but I am happy to be corrected.
