Need a handhold - son in hospital

Took him to A&E yesterday as he fell at the gym and we thought he had broken his wrist (thankfully just a sprain) however during their examinations they were worried about his circulation as his hands and lower arms were going blue and were cold to the touch, they advised we needed to make an appointment with his GP for further investigation.

Managed to get a GP appointment for 3pm today as the hospital suspect he could possibly have Raynaud's syndrome/disease

GP took his blood pressure and it was 177/127 , they thought the machine was faulty so got a another one and it was the same.

We had to take him straight to A&E, they’ve been trying to get bloods for the last 6 hrs but his veins keep collapsing and are unable to obtain his bloods, 2 doctors and 3 nurses have all tried with all sorts of needle sizes/cannulas etc… even with a vein scan machine, he’s been poked and prodded more times than we an count,

They’ve done a serious of tests, ECG, blood pressure cuffs on his arms and lower legs every 60 mins.

His only symptoms are some slight dizziness and some blurred vision, because of this they carried out a test where they turned the lights off and shown a torch in his eye… however the drs body language changed, she went and got her senior doctor to look and they redone the test.

We were then told to wait in the room as they needed to speak to a more senior doctor.

We were then put into a room, nurse came in about 45 mins later and advised he was being admitted, we asked why and she said has no one told you anything and we said no.

Doctor has come in and said DS is being transferred to another hospital, either tonight or tomorrow morning, he needs to see an specialist eye doctor , he also needs a urgent CT scan, possibly MRI and a heart scan as his ECG has shown some concerns and did we know he had a heart murmur.

They also need to get his bloods urgently somehow.

I’m not naive, I know what they are suspecting, I just need to be positive and hopefully the scans show nothing.

and there are no resits other than maths and English in November

I don't think there are Novemeber resits these days, but I am happy to be corrected.

There definitely are resits for maths and English in November.

Ah, so I was wrong. And I'm glad because it gives young people a second chance without having to wait another year.

FeetupTvon · 01/06/2025 09:54

Sending lots of love to your son and you.
There is literally nothing worse than being worried about your children.
Usually these things turn out to be something simple, hopefully you will get some answers soon.

BoilingHotand50something · 01/06/2025 10:06

Really hope you are all doing ok and you start to get some answers / treatment soon. Thinking of you.

WeightLossGoal2024 · 01/06/2025 10:26

No advice but sending a handhold m. Do not worry about the exam beyond letting school know how ill he is (prior to exam)

Letsgoforaskip · 01/06/2025 10:31

Thinking about you all. I hope you got some rest and that today you get some answers and solutions. We’re all rooting for you.

Beautifulspringsunshine · 01/06/2025 11:49

Thinking about your boy and family, don't forget to take care of yourself too. 🙏💐💛

WickWood · 01/06/2025 11:53

Bless him, I really hope you get some (reassuring!) answers soon x

movingstars · 01/06/2025 11:55

Wishing your DS a speedy recovery and you the strength to deal with this.

Hoppyhop1 · 01/06/2025 12:40

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend sending you the biggest hug. Had a recent stay with my DS - MRI, lumbar puncture, scans and tests - we were in hospital for a full week. I’ve never been so frightened in my life, all of a sudden, home, work, car, normal things in life mean absolutely nothing when your child is sick and the Doctors are exploring all sorts of awful, nasty, terrifying potential things. My heart is completely with you, fingers crossed your lovely DS is going to be ok. Take a bit of time for yourself even just to get a nice coffee or walk around outside the hospital for 10. It’s been about 5 weeks since we were discharged and I still feel completely on edge. These awful times give us a reality check of just how precious life is. X

BangSqueak · 01/06/2025 12:45

Just wanted to send a handhold and encouragement. Your DS sounds amazing. Take care of yourselves.

GrandmasCat · 01/06/2025 12:49

Op, sending you a big hug hoping that the night has not brought further challenges. Just know that you are stronger than you think and you will find the way to cope with whatever life throws at you.

cooldarkroom · 01/06/2025 12:54

So sorry to read this. I am amazed they haven't just done a scanner of his heart. They will see if he has endocarditis instantly.
(My H had this, so I know the procedure)

OchAyeTheNo0 · 01/06/2025 13:33

Sweet FA usually happens at weekends and there’s usually not a specialist around. My dad was in hospital with a suspected heart attack (it wasn’t) and the worst thing was he was admitted on a Friday night. Naff all happened until Monday morning scan wise!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/06/2025 13:44

It’s the weekend, they are simply on skeleton staff, we’ve been told most of the tests and scans he needs will be done Monday onwards.

Eye infirmary completed ds has perfect vision and sight 😁absolutely no issues found.

Now back to waiting on the ward doctor coming to see him.

We got no sleep at all, you can hear the wind coming through the ceilings and it was a whistling sound all night and then with poorly upset children 😞, observations every 60min etc.

His BP has went down also. 162 / 72.

Could you get someone to bring you in earplugs and eye masks so you can hopefully get some sleep?

Good that his eye test went well!

Tiswa · 01/06/2025 13:51

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend yes I remember with DH taken to hospital in an ambulance Friday night due to throwing up blood. Didn’t really see anyone for tests until Monday!

Letsgoforaskip · 01/06/2025 13:58

Good to hear that his eyes are fine and his blood pressure has come down. The waiting must be so hard and I’m sorry you got no rest. Hospitals are rarely quiet and your brain must be on overdrive. I hope he’s as ok as he can be in himself.

Munchyseeds2 · 01/06/2025 14:00

Good news about the eye exam!
I'm sure you are both knackered, ear plugs and eye mask are a good shout.
Hopefully things will start to become clearer tomorrow

Americano75 · 01/06/2025 14:18

Are you in Glasgow op?

Skodacool · 01/06/2025 14:20

For what it’s worth, if your DS has already taken some exams he might be able to get an aegrotat based on those papers. I was given a pass when I missed the second maths paper through illness. Just as well probably as my maths wasn’t strong and I wasn’t sure of passing!
I hope this problem gets resolved soon 😘

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 14:21

Americano75 · 01/06/2025 14:18

Are you in Glasgow op?

I think she is in Newcastle as one of the main hospitals there is the RVI (Royal Victoria Infirmary).

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/06/2025 14:37

We’re thinking of asking for him to be put on home leave, they will likely say no, but worth asking.
