Talk to me about pans.

We are getting a new kitchen in a couple of weeks and all my pans are knackered so I want to replace them.

I don’t like stainless steel pans as no matter how much people say they are non stick, I always find they are …stick (?)
I’d rather avoid Teflon for the reason everyone says to avoid it.
They can’t be heavy as my disabled daughter wouldn’t be able to lift them (looking at you, Le Cruset you lovely but leaden beasts)
Must be dishwasher safe.

Budget isn’t limitless but I’m prepared to splash out on something good.

What should I be looking at?

They have loads, any in particular you recommend?

Personally I find the supermarket pans outlast everything else and don’t break the bank.

I know you’ve said you don’t think stainless steel are non stick but I am a convert to samuel groves triply stainless steel frying pans. They are an investment but they’re brilliant. They are heavier than tefal (I used to find my small tefal frying pan would tip up on the hob) but nowhere near as heavy as le crueset cast iron. If they’re hot enough with oil they don’t stick and if they do stick you can scrub them clean without worrying you’re damaging the non stick. I believe they’ll last forever.

That’s my usual go to, but this last set has been terrible.

I have Circulon pans, not particularly cheap. They’re Teflon free and non-stick.

Have you had a look at 'Our Place' - gorgeous pans that look like cast iron but are light and no teflon but they're completely non-stick. Our Place I've bought several this year and am thrilled with them.

These look great, I’d love them. I couldn’t have the two handled one though so I’d need an alternative larger pan. Could I live without a matching set….🤔

I saw these ones earlier and liked them. I think the flat handle would be a struggle for my daughter’s hands though. Also, do the handles get hot?

Very useful. Lots of people recommending the Scoville non stick. I got one of their little frying pans and everything sticks to it.

I’m wondering now if it’s my cooking that’s the issue. 😆

I have some OXO Good Grips pans which are excellent- very light and non stick (not sure if Teflon though). I don’t put them in the dishwasher but they’re such a piece of piss to wash up it really doesn’t matter. That said I also have Circulon, SS, Le C and a couple of cheap IKEA ones - use whichever is most appropriate.

drspouse · 29/05/2025 20:19

Le Creuset non stick aren't that heavy actually and ours have lasted very well.

I second this. Not the cast iron ones but the others. Had mine about 4 years now and look brand new

Have you had them long? A few reviews on Amazon say the non stick peels off after a while.

Le Creuset triple ply steel are the business ( and not heavy and do not stick).

FelixDoublyDelicious · 29/05/2025 22:24

ProCook Stainless Steel. Love them 25 year guarantee. Futureproofed until I am dead

I have an expensive Seimens induction hob and hate my Ninja pans - I wish I had never bought them. Whereas other pans are no bother at all. my hob struggles to pick up these pans - it's a daily bind. The big pan is just a bit to small for the big ring. My theory is there's not enough conducting metal in the pans. My old Circulon pans were perfect. These give me the rage. The were over £300 too.

NotAnotherBagpiper · 29/05/2025 22:28

I will give a second shout to Our Place. Absolute game changer. Mine needs hand washing but honestly it's a joy to wash, nothing sticks to it.

I have Le Creuset pans as well which are also excellent but insanely expensive - however, they come with a lifetime guarantee so they probably wont work out dearer in the long run as I plan on living at least another 40 years and I've had them a decade already.

tothelefttotheleft · 29/05/2025 22:53

How are the Our Place non stick coatings any less bad for you than Teflon?

VanilleFraise · 30/05/2025 08:32

A recent revelation to us was that if you heat up a stainless steel pan and then add the oil, things don't stick. We bought procook stainless steel pans recently - absolutely fab.

Myblueclematis · 30/05/2025 08:48

I bought two stainless steel pans from Aldi a while back, I don't use them very often but have found they are really easy to clean and don't seem to stick. I wanted to avoid non-stick and aluminium cookware.

I used to have Le Creuset but I couldn't lift them they were so heavy to use, lovely pans but they just sat in the cupboard. Sold them online in the end.
