Wedding Presents you never used

Having just moved house again, I realised that I have moved 3 picnic baskets 4 times since I was married 28 years ago and I've never once used them. Some of them, I have used a few of the bits inside them, but I've never ever taken the baskets on a picnic or anywhere else for that matter. They have just moved from garden shed to garage etc. They were not on my gift list, they were just random gifts that people gave us. It made me wonder what other MNers might have in their cupboards that they were given as wedding or other gifts and never used?

A miniature sized slow cooker 😂😂😂. It was probably about as big as a can of beans. After we moved house once, I found it at the back of a cupboard. We had a good laugh at it, and sent it to the charity shop.

TheNightingalesStarling · 28/05/2025 12:04

We got a mirror. 7 house moves and 11 years later... we hung it on a wall!

HelpMeGetThrough · 28/05/2025 12:12

There are unopened wedding presents in our garage and have been married for 26 years.

We are having a big garage clear out this summer. It’s probably a bit late to open them now.

Not a wedding gift for us but many years ago I bought a big slow cooker and it came with a free mini slow cooker (size of can of beans) and the instructions said it was for keeping sauces warm - we used it once and then after 2 house moves we threw it away - but that might be what yours was
my unused wedding gift was a silver drinks salver - never used - never displayed even as it made me feel like we needed a butler walking around with pre dinner drinks!

PierretheBear · 28/05/2025 12:16

Endless photo frames... I think I have a box of them in the corner of the office. Will never be used.

comealongdobbeh · 28/05/2025 12:18

A bunch of photo frames but those ones with the words around them. Never got around to using them

This should be a thread of its own 🤣
We could all guess the contents.

I have a few photo frames that I didn't like even for 30 years ago they were old fashioned .and I'm sure people had "regifted" them a weird silver plated tray I was never sure what to do with it, I binned it when we moved house.

This thread will be a great advert for cash as gifts that some mumsnetters moan about.

Yes I'd be there !😀

I got married 35 years ago and, despite having a wedding list (mostly general household items as we were still setting up and only had 'cheap' stuff) you wouldn't believe how many crystal decanters we received. I think there were 5 or 6. DH only ever drank beer and I didn't drink at all, so they stayed in a cabinet until I finally got rid off them last year.

RaraRachael · 28/05/2025 12:25

About 3 fine China tea/dinner sets "To keep for best when you have visitors"

Never used any of them - we're just tinks who use Next plates and drink out of mugs 😃

They all went to the charity shop to my mother's horror.

CarrieMoonbeams · 28/05/2025 12:25

Mine was an avocado dish, as in, a dish for serving avocado on - who knew they needed a separate type of dish?!

My friend got the worst one though I think. 2 large towels (standard enough for a wedding gift I know), but one end had the word FACE stitched into it, the other end was ARSE. That was an unexpected gift to open in front of elderly relatives anyway!

Coffeeishot · 28/05/2025 12:27

Oh no face/arse 😂

turkeyboots · 28/05/2025 12:28

Lots of "art" pictures, statues, hangings. I don't know what about DH and I says that we want random art gifts, but we got loads.
I have all my mothers wedding china. I love it, she never took most of it out of the box.

If I remember, we’ll start one up here. 😁

@HelpMeGetThroughhow do you know you haven’t got a collectors item in those unopened gifts? I would be so curious as to what was in them, even if it was a 4th picnic basket Grin.

picnic hampers esp with the bits and bobs in go for quite a lot of money.
re the other poster I do not know how you could bear to not undo a present it would irritate me wondering what it was!
I agree people do not seem to have imagination when it comes to wedding gifts even with lists circulated.
I had a lot of those awful glass plates with flowers and wedding day on, numerous ornaments that was my first wedding.
second wedding I had a lot of odd bits and bobs we were living in a caravan and a lorry at the time long story so was a bit annoyed we had a huge think size of a small tyre wooden lazy susan! no idea what we were meant to do with it and it was a nightmare re space so it had to go. to add to it someone else bought a similar size slate serving tile that had to go too but I would never have used them anyway even in a house.
third wedding someone gave me a obviously 2nd hand towel with some really overpowering floral soap.
As a footnote I have now got rid of all the husbands and all the wedding gifts I only kept one ornament which I had from my daughter because she knew I had seen in a shop and fell in love with it!

RaraRachael · 28/05/2025 12:53

Wedding lists were just becoming a thing in 1984 but my mother wouldn't let me have one as it looked grabby and I should be grateful for anything I got.
So one friend got 5 coffee makers, another 12 teapots and I got loads of hideous bedlinen that didn't match either bedroom.

Crystal was a big thing back then. Loads of glasses, a fruit bowl and even a crystal horn 🙄

Coffeeishot · 28/05/2025 12:55

I had a wedding list people still went.rougue !

TealAndTurquoise · 28/05/2025 13:01

My parents were given a candelabra that never got used. They weren't dinner party people 😂We cleared mum's flat out last year after she moved into assisted living and found crystal dessert bowls and a silver cutlery set, neither of which they ever used.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/05/2025 13:03

I had a bud vase that I couldn't fit a flower bud in because the neck was too narrow. I also received a present which was handed to me by a workmate at my evening reception. I opened it , put it down when I went to get a drink and I never saw it again (it was a book about marriage and was very Christian with a big C- not our style at all).

yeesh · 28/05/2025 13:03

we have ‘t used any of the presents we received, they’re in a box in the attic. Such a waste of money. I always stick money in a card.

RomainingCalm · 28/05/2025 13:04

Embarrassingly, quite a few of our unused gifts were things we actually chose ourselves 😂. Somehow we came to a misguided conclusion that getting married was going to result in this aspirational lifestyle where we would be regular users of a pasta machine, sherry glasses, a fondue set and the infamous picnic hamper...

I’m now going to have to check every unopened box to make sure there isn’t 😫😫

CeliaCanth · 28/05/2025 13:27

We had a wedding list but a few people went rogue too - mostly exH’s side of the family. Hence receiving an enormous Alsatian table cloth which was completely plain and resembled nothing more than a gigantic posh dust sheet, and at the other end of the scale a teeny-tiny mustard pot that wouldn’t look out of place in a dolls’ house. I’ve yet to find a spoon small enough to fit in it.
