Potty training

I’ve trying to potty train my 3.5 year old. He has all the signs loves sitting on the toilet aswell as his carry potty but we haven’t been able to get any wee’s in the potty or toliet. This is day 4. I says to him “where do we go for a wee” he says “toliet” but he just isn’t doing it. He will happily sit on the potty. I’ve tried bubbles blowing through a straw books ect and nothing is actually working. But I don’t wanna give up firstly because he is 3.5 and also he haws scared of the potty so he has made some type of progress

I used rewards for the potty, with my DS I had a bunch of mini dinosaur toys and put them all in a bag and he could ‘lucky dip’ when he managed to use the potty.

My DD was much harder but it turned out she responded far better to the actual toilet than to a potty so we got her one of those seats with stairs plus a sticker reward book, she loved a sticker chart.

It’s hard but you have to push through, I also stopped using pull ups with both of mine and they hated the feel of soiling themselves so were much quicker to respond.

Timing. 20 mins after meals and snacks.

I may be wrong but I wonder if he just hasn't made the connection between "where do we go for wees?" and the actual sensation. You might find you get it right once, he joins the dots and you're basically sorted.

My DS was very nearly 3 when he was toilet trained. For him it was about recognising he needed to go and control of waiting for the toilet. He was also at kindergarten so that helped as they all went together as a routine. Does your little recognise he needs to go?

But once he was clean and dry that was it.

I think once he’s done it once he’ll be alright, but it’s getting him to do it. He’s been on the toilet on and off all day. I put pants on him earlier like underwear pants. And he just wees in them all. Every time he goes for a wee I end up picking him up and putting him on the toilet. But I don’t know how I’m meant to go on like this for, just so that he’s never gonna understand that, but he does know that he needs to go for we on the toilet as when I ask him he understands. I’ve tried reward charts and chocolate and toys nothing seems to be working

Do you have a male partner? I found having my DH actually show our son helped. I trained him at two and a half and it was a fairly quick process. Dry overnight too after a couple weeks. Using a real toilet helped too with both mine, especially my daughter who had a habit of holding her wee. Of course there will be accidents (when they need to go they need to go).

Mine were both more like a week before I saw real progress. Some do take longer so it's worth sticking it out.

CheeryAzureOtter · 27/05/2025 18:34

No I don’t. It’s just us. So I’m trying my best. Just don’t feel like it’s working if I’m honest. But I’m gonna keep at it. But I will have to put pull ups over pants I reckon if we go out ect. But I feel like we need to get this sorted. Maybe 6 weeks holiday would be a better time to do it!

I know it doesn't feel like progress but it sounds like he understands what to do but he hasn't linked it up.

Maybe it would be better to wait for the summer?

CheeryAzureOtter · 28/05/2025 21:58

He actually made progress tonight before bed he pointed to bathroom so I took him and he went for a wee. So hopefully 🤞🏼

Hello!
hoping you'll see this. I'm wondering how you got on? I literally could have written your posts myself right now! My little girl is sitting on the toilet or potty but we just can't get her to wee on it. Got all the rewards ready for when she does but I just don't know how to get it to happen for that first time! Did anything in particular work for you in the end? Xx

my child is now fully potty trained. When I made this post I tried for about 2 weeks but we wasn’t really getting anywhere. Every now and then I would say shall we go for a wee wee and he was like “no” 😂 but at nursery he kept going into the bathroom for his wee but wasn’t making it to the toliet. (He was in a pull up pants) but he sees the other children going. So about a month after trying I just caught him on the toliet weeing. And been amazing ever since really, I think it’s all down to when they are ready! I know that’s annoying because you want them to be ready ect. Also I used potty videos, you can find on YouTube character videos like peppa pig Bluey, spider man ect and I feel like they helped a lot. And my son likes pretend play so he put his teddy on the toliet and we rewarded him ect. I hope that helps. I know it’s so hard x also don’t put so much pressure on it. Because I feel like I did but honestly one day it just clicked was soooo bizarre

Congratulations! It's true, one day it clicks!

CheeryAzureOtter · 11/08/2025 13:37
