I can't believe what I've seen. It's truly horrific, some of the videos are so graphic. Standing with LFC fans tonight. #YNWA

Devastated over this.
The Scouse are the best and kindest people in the world. I believe any action was 100% intended to help and stop further damage.

Surely they were trying to stop him continuing to mow people down.
The average driver on realising they had made contact with a pedestrian is to get out and check the situation. This guy continued driving or tried to. They stopped him.

Exactly

It’s close to me and I’ve seen all the posts and videos on FB. The majority of the comments are more than casual racism, though it was an older white guy driving. Maybe that’s why other threads were removed? The guy is in custody. I can’t help but feel angry that the first response from those who weren’t hit wasn’t to try to help the people who were injured. They went on the bounce to try to drag the driver out of the car and attack the car itself with their fists. One guy audibly told a police officer that he was going to “fucking kill him”. The police were fighting to get past the adult males attacking the car. Surely your first thought would be to run to the victims and do anything you could to help them. It’s the mentality of the few that let the rest, who were lucky to have not been hit, down. It’s commonplace around here to kick off first and ask questions later if they even bother to. Thugs can’t make a terrible scene any better for anyone when they’re shouting, screaming and trying to smash their way into the car. It’s a scary mass reaction but somehow deemed as normal around here.

Agree with @alexdgr8 of course trying to stop the guy continuing was to stop him using the car as a weapon

Completely agree. I think hiding the other threads is such a cop out. Would they have hidden the other threads if the attack was in London? No probably not

Agreed.
I'm so sad about this happening in my home.

Exactly. Also I'm not being funny but anger is a perfectly normal, human response. I'm angry about it.
God. People being ridiculous saying stuff like this! They have no idea how they would react until they are in that situation themselves

Agree. Instead of questioning some strong language perhaps think about what they stopped.

Standing in front of the car wasn't going to stop it. The only alternative was to go in at the side, if doors were locked, you would find an alternative to get the driver to be distracted enough to take their foot off the pedal.

Don't forget the police weren't actually on the immediate scene. I listened to an observer walking with his family who said that it was all peaceful when suddenly the police took off at a run. The observer didn't see anything but knew it was serious.

We've seen this in Manchester, Westminster and all over Europe at parades you can't anticipate one nutcase with a set of wheels.

Clockpic · 27/05/2025 14:32

I watched the video and although it's awful, it didn't seem intended to "ram" the crowd. He certainly didn't have his foot down. Was it "just" an arsey middle aged man objecting to being held up by the crowds rather than intending to cause harm? Obviously he has caused harm, but if he'd wanted to it could have been so much worse.

Come on, if you'd accidentally hit one person you'd stop if you had all your faculties. I've stopped to check on animals.

Comefromaway · 27/05/2025 14:36

My daughter had walked down that street earlier in the day. She had arranged to meet friends but they had forgotten about the parade so she nipped to Flannels in town then went to the gym. She was driving back to her flat when lots of police cars went racing past. A work colleague was there but further up (probably on The Strand)

The videos look horrific, what an awful end to a day of celebrations. FWIW I didn't see any speculation on the other thread, just what mainstream news outlets were saying.

Absolutely, there's obviously something terribly wrong, but if he'd set out deliberately to ram the crowd and cause destruction, wouldn't he have done it faster?

Comefromaway · 27/05/2025 14:39

CosmicScouser · 27/05/2025 10:04

Exactly

Precisely. As a first aider you are always told to protect yourself first. The best way to do that was to try and stop the driver from continuing on. Lets not forget a paramedic on a bike was amongst those injured.

crumblingschools · 27/05/2025 14:47

Saw video footage on the news at lunchtime, I didn't realise how far the car had been driven on crowded streets. Surely if you realised there were still many people in the streets after the parade, you just stop and wait for the road to clear not carry on regardless. The back window of the car seems to have been broken by someone the driver had initially reversed into, watching the video footage.

If he had been in a hurry due to an emergency, there were plenty of police (or other emergency personnel) he could have spoken to, to get help clearing a space for him to go through

Now ploughing through a crowd of people is a thing for some people wanting to cause awful damage, you can understand why some members of the crowd were attacking the car/trying to get to the driver. They would assume the driver is intent on maiming/killing people not a medical incident or accident.

Are you lot messing. He was in a massive people carrier, people were opening the car doors trying to get him to stop, and he shut the doors and then rammed a load of people. Like, sorry, what else do you need to see to know it was totally, 1,000% intentional.

It's not speculation. It was on purpose. Fact. Plain as day.

Yes, you've misunderstood me, or I've explained badly. Of course his actions to keep going were deliberate, and who know why, but if his main intention was to cause destruction wouldn't he have done it faster?

I'm choosing to follow police they seem to have it covered. It's an extremely rare event and my thoughts are with those affected

Blaming the bystanders not the perpetrators, only on Mumsnet.
Or The Guardian.

Yeah, I don't know. He was stopped and then went again. It was fast enough to hurl a guy off the bonnet so. Yeah. I don't know.

Clockpic · 27/05/2025 15:07

Obviously we don't know what happened or what the motive was, but if he did find himself in that crowd by accident or stupidity, it must have been terrifying.

christmarsecranberry · 27/05/2025 15:08

Car ramming attacks are extremely rare in Europe. It's looking like this was an isolated incident. Well done to our police for a swift arrest. I'm sure more details will emerge when appropriate

The lack of responses on this thread show how you middle class lot think of scousers and Liverpool. Clear as day.
