Just imagine if this was Melania and Trump. The press would have a field day.

Edited

They are having a field day. We are talking about it here. What more do you expect?

deeahgwitch · 26/05/2025 14:35

I agree.
Yet it is acceptable in France apparently. ☹️

AInightingale · 26/05/2025 14:35

Second spate of bizarre Macron behaviour in a very short time. I wonder if they both have drug (ab)use issues. Brigitte is shockingly thin and gaunt-looking. Might explain the emotional volatility.

millymoo1202 · 26/05/2025 14:36

It’s pretty shocking

legsekeven · 26/05/2025 14:36

We only see a split second of footage. Very very hard to know what’s actually happening. I’m not excusing violent behaviour or domestic abuse. I just mean we only see a second of footage. It would be very easy to misinterpret

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 26/05/2025 14:37

Oh 😬 its bad isn't it

I remember people saying the same about Saatchi.

Macron's reaction and their demeanour as they exit the plane is not that of a couple who have just been having a laugh.

My first thought was Saatchi and the way people reacted. It’s so weird how people play stuff down. This may have been a one off but it’s not playful or gentle or loving. It’s clearly a shove in the face born of negative feelings and it’s never okay to put your hands on someone. She wasn’t defending herself because you can clearly see he isn’t touching her. But people will still be here with the ‘it’s nothing’ responses.

Married couple have a row shocker! I really don’t think we know anything about wha5 this does or doesn’t imply about their relationship. It wasn’t a punch.

Erm... arguments in my home don't involve hands on faces...

sprinklydot · 26/05/2025 14:39

He looks really vulnerable in that split second after, that shocked smile and wave 😦

TheCatsTongue · 26/05/2025 14:40

Wouldn't know this even happened if you just get all your news from the BBC. Fortunately everyone else is covering it.

And the BBC wonders why it isn't trusted any more.

I agree. It doesn’t look good. Or playful etc as suggested below.

zenas · 26/05/2025 14:41

The right to privacy in France is huge. I can see that clip being neutered there, but I suppose not in other countries.

Different country, different culture. I don't think it will be widely reported on in France, maybe initially but not for days on end with calls for resignation, divorce, counselling and so on. The PR spin is working hard already to call this a playful joust. But they WERE quarrelling, and that was admitted.

I could be totally wrong and the French people (and the RN) might milk it for all it's worth, but I still think the right to privacy might succeed here.

What was the previous but recent incident of bizarre behaviour @AInightingale?

Well yeah but it's all a bit bloody bizarre isn't it, the whole thing is! I never get why no one seems to care she groomed him? It's not like a five year age gap and they were neighbours she's old enough to be his mother and was in a position of power over him. The fact he didn't even look surprised when she hit him that tells me it's just another Monday for them

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/05/2025 14:44

All I can see is two hands lightly rubbing his face.

This is the gutter press trying to whip up a storm.

Yes, well, there were always gullible fools who refused to see what my mother did to me as well. She was 'just making an affectionate joke' when she hit me just above the ear so the bruises were hidden by my hair. She was 'just brushing something off your top' when she grabbed me and gave me a slapped uppercut. Just 'holding your hand' when she dug her fingers into my wrist.

Just joking when she said 'You'd better watch yourself tonight' before a 3am shock and awe five nights later where I'd wake to the metal bookcase being pulled down and shoved at my sleeping body.

Just trying to cause trouble.

There’s barely been any mention of it. And Mumsnet is a is an internet forum - hardly the mainstream press.

People don’t seem to care when it’s women. Look at that Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He was 17, she’d known him since he was younger but people say it’s sweet and they have kids so it’s true love. . And any time a female teacher sexually abuses a child loads of men say ‘I wish we had teachers like her’ and so on.

We have a major imbalance towards female predators, but they seem to be on the rise which is worrying.

My mistake, it is on the BBC, but they were once again very slow to report it and and have buried it away somewhat.

I think people do care, it's commented on quite a lot, but really what you gonna do at this point?! it wasn't him doing the grooming and as such it hadn't affected his political career.

LucyMonth · 26/05/2025 14:45

Anybody want to tag in the user who was trying to convince everyone extreme age gap relationships are ok but using the Macrons as an example? Even after people pointed out that they met when he was 15 and she was his 39 year old teacher?

She said it doesn’t matter because they ended up happily married and he doesn’t seemed to have been harmed by it.

It looks to me like a mum desperately trying to rub marmite off their son's face before he runs off into school rather than a slap.

🙄🙄

I’m so sorry, that this happened to you and that you weren’t supported.

I have a relative who was abused. I have heard about how she ‘asked for it’ on multiple occasions. There is NEVER an excuse for abuse. X
