has anyone seen this on the news?! What do we all think, it’s all a bit bizarre

She clearly and deliberately attacked him. I don’t expect my DH to treat me like that. You can see he doesn’t know quite what to do after it. He smiles when he knows he is seen, then heads towards where she is (out of view of the camera) as if to say to her “WTF!”

Rattatoille · 26/05/2025 22:01

I don't know what to make of this, it looks like full on violence, but of course the French authorities have said it's "just joking". Regarding the comments about the age difference, and whether EM has had an affair, are both of these not requirements of the job for whoever the president of France is? The French don't seem bothered about extra marital affairs of their politicians.

jamanbutter · 26/05/2025 22:03

Just goes to show you just don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.
It tends to be those in high positions of employment who hide domestic abuse very well, they cannot risk this being revealed and they are the most reluctant to admit it to themselves.

I am no fan on Macron but he does not deserve this, seeing this makes me think this is not the first time, I hope one day he finds the courage to leave.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 26/05/2025 22:10

My impression was she was wiping away a crumb or something from his face, or maybe she kissed him and got lipstick on and she was wiping that away. I think he looked a little irritated because he realized the press was there with cameras right when she did that.

Like my mother who used to lick her finger and tame my wild eyebrows when I was a kid. I hated that.

Maybe he hit her first

Why should we put your maybe theory over what we saw with our own eyes - her hitting him.

Hwi · 26/05/2025 22:16

She is a kiddy fiddler, poor Manny - she groomed him. Not surprised at anything with those two.

Eastie77Returns · 26/05/2025 22:18

I watched a behind the scenes documentary about his first run for the French presidency. There was a scene where he forgot or lost something and she was looking at him with cold anger while he repeatedly apologised and laughed nervously. I said at the time that he looked liked a school child who was scared of being scolded. He may be president now but their relationship played out for decades before he was elected, beginning when he was a schoolchild and she was an adult. So obviously she had the upper and authoritative hand for many many years. That dynamic would easily have continued even as he became one of the most powerful men in Europe.

There was clearly something amiss with her to begin with as a mentally stable 40 year old would not be sexually attracted to a 15 year old boy. I therefore don’t know why people have a hard time believing he may be controlled and abused by this very disturbed woman.

It is quite unbelievable how some posters are trying to excuse her. If she was a 39 year old teacher in this country having an affair with a 15 year old student she would be in prison.

This unbalanced relationship has continued and in spite of clear evidence of her physically abusing her husband - still people are trying to excuse her. It is very very odd.

Oh give over.

The law is different in France anyway.

You know bugger all about them or their relationship other than what the press reports - and that is usually skewed.

She's 72, they've been together for 20+ years, he's an adult man and can make his own choice- oh, and he's the bloody president too.

Melania wasn't 15 and he wasn't in a position of power over her when they got into the relationship. Th issue with The Macrons is how they met, not just the age gap

I know that the others weren't of the same age, but the reason I mention other age gap relationships is more the focus on her old age, while the other way round things do not get so intensely debated in the media (except for really famous people), about what is or could be physically wrong with the older partner or about her/his "fading beauty" etc.

Another aspect I mean is that much more money or power are also "position of authority" over someone, same as being much older and experienced. Sometimes all three aspects go together. But to say the age gap is much more despicable than an income difference of several millions, I'm not so sure it's that clear cut.

Carrie and Boris Johnson are another example of a couple with an age gap.

I agree that the clip from the plane looks very strange and not like banter, but there are so many comments here bashing Ms Macron's age in itself, apart from the meeting time of the couple.

About how they got together, same as other PP, I read during the time of the election of his first presidency similar articles of that they met at the theater group and he was obviously infatuated, but that this did not become a real relationship until later, and, as others said, that his parents sent him to a different school. I don't know what the truth his here, of course, but I don't think it's so clear they were having a physical relationship with him at 15 years. I understand the grooming aspect that others mentioned, though.

What if he goaded her and the whole thing is a setup?

I'm not saying it is but we just do not know.

There's alot of (understandable) projecting from some who have suffered domestic violence on this thread.

And if she is doing so, of course it's despicable. But we just don't know the whole story here.

Nope. When you talk about goading, you're entering Sean Connery territory.

WearyAuldWumman · 26/05/2025 22:26

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/05/2025 21:21

I remember in the 90s when pictures came out of Paul Gasgoine's wife with a battered face after he'd hit her. The papers were full of accusations that it must have been her fault and she probably goaded him into it because he was known for having a temper. And it was all forgivable anyway because he was a great footballer.

I was a teenage at the time but it sickened me even then. I'd hoped the world had evolved into being more civilised in 2025 but this thread is showing me otherwise.

The one thing that gave me hope was hearing a class of S3/Y10 boys discussing this and saying how disgusting it was.

You are joking surely??

uuuuu · 26/05/2025 22:36

Looking at that again, that isn't the first time she's gone for Macron's face like that. He knows how to take abuse. And the reaction of the woman in the yellow top says it all as well. She's horrified, tenses and gets away.

He needs to get rid of her.

SalfordQuays · 26/05/2025 19:32

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen so tiredness, dieting, cosmetic surgery and high heels are now a defence for physical violence?

No, of course not. But they may be an explanation for losing your self control, which leads to this sort of irrational , impulsive and frankly bizarre behaviour

SalfordQuays · 26/05/2025 22:41

MidnightMeltdown · 26/05/2025 20:53

Hmmm… I think I will reserve judgement until we find out what he’s done to deserve it (if we ever do!)

I wonder whether another woman has caught his eye

@MidnightMeltdown out of curiosity, what action do you thinks causes someone to “deserve” being shoved in the face?

TaupeMember · 26/05/2025 22:44

I've just watched it again. He goes straight back in there after her. I don't think he looks like hes cowering at all.

The one thing that gave me hope was hearing a class of S3/Y10 boys discussing this and saying how disgusting it was.

In 2025 no-one would suggest that a woman 'asked for it'. But now men seem fair game for that kind of accusation. At least on Mumsnet today.

The hypocrisy on this thread is REALLY disturbing. And demonstrates why so few male victims of DV tell anyone.

friendlycat · 26/05/2025 22:46

Their relationship certainly is “unusual” to say the least and it’s been covered extensively in the French press for years. Of course it’s disturbing that given her age and position back then that she had a relationship with a 15 year old pupil who was in the same class as her daughter. Albeit legally ok in France.

His parents then moved him to another school but their relationship continued and in time he married her. Obviously none of this negates what happened prior to their marriage.

The still shots of this incident don’t really show much as it could be anything, but the moving video does indicate something rather different. The body language as they disembark the plane also indicates that none of this was just a minor playful fracas. Time will tell.

cumbriaisbest · 26/05/2025 21:33

We don't know do we? Really.

@cumbriaisbest we know she shoved him in the face because it’s on film, and it’s not AI because they’ve admitted it.

TaupeMember · 26/05/2025 22:46

We don't know what went before.

He couldn't been aggressive with her.

For all we know she's putting up with far more...

We don't know.

Would you search for an 'explanation' if a man hit a woman in the face?

Unbelievable.

Posts like this are why Mumsnet has a reputation for being man-hating.

When I viewed the video I felt very sorry for him.
