You know that was the excuse Saatchi made for abusing Nigella Lawson in public?

Not amusing or convincing then and not now.

I can't see how he could argue that strangling his wife at a restaurant was cleaning her nose of coke though...

I'm not excusing Bridgette Macron if she did punch him by the way. Assuming she did which it looks from our angle that she did.

TENSsion · 26/05/2025 16:55

She was his teacher and she groomed him.
I’m not surprised the abuse has continued throughout their marriage.
He shouldn’t be shamed for it.
His job shouldn’t be in question.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 26/05/2025 16:56

We dont know what happened. He might have asked her for a threesome or told her that her legs look like toothpicks in that outfit. She might have just found out that Starmer and Macron snorted the white bag off the breasts of Parisian escorts… we don’t know and it is wrong to judge or make accusations. Speculation and wild theories are essential though.

Oh, I'm not normalising feminine violence just because I'm French, before you all burn me like Joan of Arc...

I'm just saying that this gesture will be interpreted around the world differently.

‘It’s cultural’ or ‘she’s old school’ are not excuses for domestic abuse, sorry.

In some cultures it’s ‘okay’ to beat your wife or marry a 13 year old. That doesn’t make those things acceptable.

ScarlettOYara · 26/05/2025 16:56

JudgeJ · 26/05/2025 16:53

Is that because it's a woman pushing a man in the face?

Yeah, pushed him so hard his head went right back. Nasty.

SalfordQuays · 26/05/2025 16:57

This thread has been such an eye-opener for me. I now realise why people smack their kids, and why people abuse their partners, and why so many friends/family have no idea their relative is being beaten. It’s clear that for a significant proportion of the population, a degree of physical violence is completely acceptable. A whack on the face is a playful shove, a gentle push, even an act of kindness to clean their face. And when these people see their victim recoil, they don’t realise what that means. They don’t realise they’ve shocked and scared their victim. They think it’s playful.

Anyone who can’t see how abusive this interaction is needs to take a long hard look at themselves and what aggression they may be normalising.

This is a good point. The international reporting and reaction to this will be interesting.

It looks to me like a mum desperately trying to rub marmite off their son's face before he runs off into school rather than a slap.

Does it? Really? Because if Trump was ‘desperately trying to rub marmite’ off Melania’s face like that…. I don’t think we’d really be saying that. She refused to take his arm as they descended too so it looks like more than that. Sorry, I’m not having a go at you, just pointing out how it would look if roles/people were reversed /exchanged.

The crew on the plane will leak eventually.

We don't know what happened before. It's true. However, we saw what she did.
If she was angry about something, I'm sure there would have been an opportunity for a discussion to clear the air, or for them to do something about the situation.
What we did see was her pushing his face hard.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/05/2025 16:59

I hope that none of the posters who are pretzeling themselves to excuse violence against a man dismissing this as a lot of made up stuff and nonsense have sons who might one day find themselves in an abusive relationship. And if they do then hopefully they won't expect any support and be ready for the inevitable "man up" comments to come their way.

I agree. It's shocking.

I agree. Like this footage on the BBC (watch all 34 seconds):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/c201e8g0yg3o

Having watched that, it's impossible to accept any of the excuses some people are making for her atrocious behaviour.

Saatchi was also photographed pulling Nigella's nose. Nigella said in court that he told people he was cleaning her nose.

If EM has been the one doing the hitting would you be prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt in the same way?

Yes it's a whack in the face. And fast so he couldn't dodge.

Oh, so he might have deserved it? That domestic abuse and assault is OK?

OK OK. Don't attack me. I've said I'm not excusing her behaviour. I had only seen the still photos and couldn't work out what she was doing.

It’s not acceptable to me but it is clearly acceptable to Macron. Not sure what you saying ‘it’s unacceptable’ is going to achieve.

@nomas many people stay in abusive relationships. It’s wrong to say it’s “clearly acceptable” to them. It’s not acceptable, but often for a host of complex reasons, they don’t/can’t leave. That doesn’t mean we should say “ah well, he/she doesn’t mind the abuse, so I won’t express an opinion”.

We don't know if it's "acceptable" to Macron. We don't have the full story. However, what she did was not acceptable, I don't know why people would say it is.

Do you understand how domestic abuse works? They don’t think it’s ‘acceptable’, they’re abused?!

And by calling it out and saying it’s not okay helps to change people’s perspectives over time. What would you rather I do? Say “oh well, silly Macron must have bought it on himself, what a naughty boy” and just let it slide? If it’s domestic abuse I’m going to call it out no matter the gender or culture. Same as it might be legal to marry children but I’m going to say that’s fucking disgusting.

ETA it was once perfectly acceptable in this country to rape your wife - if we just blindly accept things then they never change. By calling this shit out, that’s how you eventually get change.

We’re not talking about ‘people’, we’re talking about Macron. I wish he would leave Brigitte but for whatever reason he has not, even as one of the most powerful men in the world.
