No, it’s not. If the policy doesn’t raise money then people have been lied to…the Government knew that the risk of that was high due to the number of pupils who would be removed from independent schools. They were publicly talking about a report that said that less pupils would be removed, but they had separate advice that the numbers would be higher.

And? Even if it is true, so more children were removed from private school than were initially estimated. Do you really think that people who supported the policy view that as anything other than a good thing?

There is no way the courts should be anywhere near this. Don’t like it? This is what elections are for.

Financial dysmorphia - been quite a bit about it in the press, have a Google. Also I think although we are laughing at these people (if indeed they are people), you get plenty like them on MN.

Do you think that it is acceptable for a Government to publicise that a policy will make a sum of money that will be used in state schools when in fact they knew there was a real risk of it costing the taxpayer a significant sum of money?! We’ve been told that it will pay for extra teachers in state schools…meanwhile state schools have started putting their staff at risk of redundancy…

Do you actually know what the court case is about?! Do you also know that in an unprecedented move the Speaker of the House has tried to stop a report about SEND pupils that the Government has previously used publicly from being used as evidence. This was a move made by the Speaker after the hearing itself.

We are told lots of things. Why is this any different to anything else, other than it disproportionately affects people with money?

No, it disproportionally affects parents with children with SEND who removed their DC from state schools that failed to support them and now cannot afford the significantly increased fees in private school and/or who are finding that their private schools are closing… because they don’t have money.

And you are right that there are other lies that we are told, I challenge those too when I become aware of them. And that’s the same for whoever is in power, whether I voted for them or not.

Call me cynical, but I’m not sure that for most people supporting this case, it’s totally about the SEND children. And why should they be a special group here anyway? There are plenty of us with children who have special needs who, VAT or no VAT, could not afford private schools, just the same as as the non-SEND parents.

Hugo is quite beside himself that he's got to sell the Jag, I've had to drop yogalates and my weekly blow dry.

I'm utterly furious that our plight is the subject of such fun.

You’ve dropped your weekly blow dry?! Sorry dear, but I can’t be seen talking to you at the school gates anymore

Because the blatant disregard of vulnerable children is the start of a slippery slope which many of us have been warning about for some time…hopefully your DC’s ECHP won’t be removed if they are in a mainstream school…and how does it help your child for there to be even more SEND children in state schools with resources spread more thinly?

Escapingagain · 25/05/2025 20:37

Five holidays and private schools are definitely essentials in life 🙄😂

We are a long way down the slippery slope already. My child is better served by growing up in a fairer society, than by having a slightly bigger share of the scraps left to them by those families with the good fortune to have money than us (because that’s generally where money comes from - not from hard work or merit, but the luck to have parents with money). I would happily get rid of private schools entirely.

“with the good fortune to have money than us (because that’s generally where money comes from - not from hard work or merit, but the luck to have parents with money”

I feel sorry for your children if you believe that…I’m a working class, free school meals girl who earns eight times as much as my dad ever earned. I work (and have worked) with lots of people from similar backgrounds and, like me, were the first in their families to go to university.

Then you are the exception that proves the rule. The stats do not lie. The biggest indicator of how wealthy someone will be in their lifetime is how much money their parents had.

You feel sorry for my children? What a distasteful thing to say.

Yes, because my mam taught me to aim for the stars, she didn’t make me believe that my background would hamper me. You seem to have that belief…you need to be very careful that you don’t pass it on to your children.

80% of people in my profession are state school educated. As you said, the stats don’t lie.

So 80% in your profession are state educated? And yet only 6% of children in the UK go to private schools. Do you see where this is going?

Oh, and I’m not telling you how to raise your children, so do me the same courtesy please.

I was waiting for you to say that, you fell straight into it…20% of sixth form pupils are privately educated…very rare for someone in my profession not to be educated until 18….do you see where I am going….

Well, I think we need to think a bit more before just saying "rich cunts, womp womp".

Those two are paying way over £100k in tax every year between them. In under a decade, they'll contribute a million quid to HMRC. When you consider how much money people who aren't net contributors receive from the state, I think that the likes of that family are extremely valuable to this country.

They are very internationally mobile and if I were them, I'd be out of this country right away. There are plenty of countries that they could go to and pay shit all tax. And go on more than five holidays and not get sneered at - as the people on this thread are doing. That family are what we should all aspire to be like.

And if the Moy family are reading - look people, your kids are young and adaptable. You both are rich, talented and beautiful. You don't need to give any shits about disruption of education at this stage - just hot foot it to a country that doesn't treat you as a cash cow and actually values the fact that you are hardworking, high earning and model citizens.

You both are rich, talented and beautiful.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It's a stock photo, FFS.

Now, why do you think the Telegraph chose to use a stock photo? Could it be, perchance, because the whole story is made-up bollocks?

TheArtfulNavyDreamer · 25/05/2025 21:15

Presume they’re talking foreign holidays. I’ve only managed 4 this year due to cost of living and have had to make up the shortfall with center parcs breaks; we even went really wild and booked an Airbnb weekend! 😂

A quick google says 12%.

More than 6% for sure, but still closer than 20%. And really, you’re trying to lay traps? I guess I should have stopped replying to you when you brought my children into it. I’ll stop now instead.

Araminta1003 · 25/05/2025 21:22

I do not understand why people earning so much money would not just stash most of it in a pension, buy a holiday house in France and retire early? Why would they spend 1.5 million on school fees.
The vast majority of people in this country would aim to earn that kind of money for a few years, threat it like a lottery win, pay off their mortgage and then put up their feet.
The whole point is you have a subset of overly zealous people like this who just keep going and fall in the trap of consumerism and the need to have 5 holidays a year. The rest of society benefits as they get taxed shedloads. So I do not really see the issue.

The least likely part of the whole story is that their youngest is called Barry

Meghan Trainor, the pop star, has a toddler called Barry!

Odd, but true / maybe it’s coming back!
