Dogs jumping up

I take my lab to our local park at least once a day. She walks on the beach the other times.

There are two dogs there that constantly jump up at me - usually because I have treats on me. I’m always working on her recall etc so she stays well trained. I don’t want to stop bringing the treats because they’ve worked so well for her - but I’m getting sick of getting covered in mud or being slammed in the stomach. The owners do sweet FA just repeat their dog’s name. I am friendly with them so it’s awkward to say anything. Their dogs are just not trained. I don’t have this problem with others dogs (who might just have a sniff which I don‘t mind).

Is there anything effective way of preventing them doing this?

Throw treats away from you and walk on?

No don't do this because they will then associate people with treats.

I would address the owners and tell them to train their dogs. In the meantime, turn your back on the dogs, no verbal or physical attention and keep walking.

Turn your back on the jumping up dogs the second they try to jump up.

We also have a lab and from puppy he wanted to jump up and turning your back worked so well to get him to stop. It was a long process but he doesn’t jump at all now. I really wish that people would just train their dogs properly!

(Not saying we are the perfect trainers, our labs recall is rubbish so we have a strictly on-lead dog only unless we hire an enclosed space).

Turn your back on the dogs, fold your arms and ignore them - any interaction you give them is just going to encourage them.

I’d fold arms and turn away every time. My dog’s activity trainer does this - I don’t think he’s being stand-offish, or doesn’t like me or my dog, he just wants to help train her not to be a nuisance (she picked up on it very quickly and now greets appropriately).
I help my friend who has a new puppy the same way, even though her puppy is extremely cute and it’s hard to turn my back on her Grin. She won’t be cute to everyone though and it’s important dogs learn asap not to jump up.

Can I ask, do you ever give these dogs treats? I'm not saying you are to blame at all, but when we started training our dog, a man in our village gave her a treat every time he saw her. She is pretty good, and wouldn't jump at a random person we saw, but if she sees him, I struggle to hold her in the lead, and she will not listen to me at all if off lead, because she knows there is a bigger reward elsewhere (in her mind). She doesn't just jump at other dog walker carrying treats it's just those who have given her them.

As I say, I realise this may not be the case here.

No it’s a fair question and no I definitely don’t. I have a bum bag and when I go there I wear it over my shoulder to keep it away but these two dogs don’t seem to care. I will try the turning back thing - I find it awkward as owners don’t immediately act to stop them it’s so frustrating
